Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns (9 October 1835 – 16 December 1921) was a French composer, organist, conductor and pianist of the Romantic era. His best-known works include Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso (1863), the Second Piano Concerto (1868), the First Cello Concerto (1872), Danse macabre (1874), the opera Samson and Delilah (1877), the Third Violin Concerto (1880), the Third ("Organ") Symphony (1886) and The Carnival of the Animals (1886).
Saint-Saëns was a musical prodigy; he made his concert debut at the age of ten. After studying at the Paris Conservatoire he followed a conventional career as a church organist, first at Saint-Merri, Paris and, from 1858, La Madeleine, the official church of the French Empire. After leaving the post twenty years later, he was a successful freelance pianist and composer, in demand in Europe and the Americas.
As a young man, Saint-Saëns was enthusiastic for the most modern music of the day, particularly that of Schumann, Liszt and Wagner, although his own compositions were generally within a conventional classical tradition. He was a scholar of musical history, and remained committed to the structures worked out by earlier French composers. This brought him into conflict in his later years with composers of the impressionist and expressionist schools of music; although there were neoclassical elements in his music, foreshadowing works by Stravinsky and Les Six, he was often regarded as a reactionary in the decades around the time of his death.
Saint-Saëns held only one teaching post, at the École Niedermeyer in Paris, and remained there for less than five years. Helian, WTG finding money in the piles -thats definitely a good incentive to continue!
Trissie, that recipe for chicken thighs sounds delicious! M&S suffered a big cyber attack (possibly from a group of hackers called Scattered Spider?) around the Easter weekend. Huge disruption, and online shopping was unavailable for 6 weeks. As you can guess, they lost £ millions, although I understand around half was covered by insurance. Sock levels and availability of clothes, homewares and food have been badly affected (I did read that Tesco's let M-S have some of their stocks of Marmite -a UK essential
to keep their shelves stocked. When I went there yesterday, I found the Foodhall to be well stocked, and I could get the chocolates I was looking for and a few other bits and pieces, but the clothing availability was rather patchy, so I'll order that online now online shopping is back. (I just need underwear, and I know exactly what size/style etc I need).
Bama, WTG resisting temptation in the thrift shop!

(((Gma))) I think that is the perfect final resting place for DTutsi. She was so greatly loved, and, after all, she was one of God's creatures too.

I had a very productive time in my garden yesterday, and was just finishing up as I felt the first few spots of rain. I had intended to fold laundry before we went out, but Jude decided to commandeer my lap instead so that's now on the list for today. We had a nice meal with DH's friends, although we were right by the door of the restaurant, so asked for it to be closed when the thunderstorm and torrential rain started. 
Fortunately the rain had eased by the time we drove home.
Today, DH is going out with his friends. I have plenty to do round the house, and I need to check the forecast as I would like to spray the roses (this may have to wait a few days, as it needs to be dry!)

I don't think I've heard/played Camille Saint-Saëns, but I will check his music. If one watches enough movie, one gets acquainted with a lot of classical pieces in a by the way way
kittykatt, that's very kind of Tesco to not have M&S customers suffer from lack of marmite!
to all those who want to try my chicken thighs recipe - it works just as well with mushrooms or any other kind of firm vegetable (like winter squash, parsnip etc). It was a staple lunch for me (and maybe even for the toddler(s) when I was a stay at home mom.
helia, unfortunately remoskas are no longer sold in the USA (they are sold in the UK, though, and they are very popular with the campervan crowd), but being a Czech invention, and with our love for cottaging (where you don't usually have a standard kitchen with an oven), you will find them in a good portion of homes around here. And of course they are more efficient than heating the whole oven if you're cooking small, so they will be a go to for smaller households as well. Me, I am a kitchen geek loving my kitchen equipment and using (and sometimes buying) anything I can get my hands on, but hey
Anyway, Saturday. I've allowed myself enough of a slow morning, it's time to get going! Kids have a short sleepover scout trip (basically a campfire evening to "advance" to the elder groups - it's always done before the summer camp), so I have to get them to pack and be at the meeting time at 4pm and then pick them up at 10 tomorrow. Still, that's gonna give me time to go and buy DBD's birthday present!

And I realised I never shared my piece of news this week. Some months ago I mentioned that the government had decided to abolish NHS England (where DH works). Of course, they don't have a plan for how/why/ when this will be happening.
But, this week, they announced the first round of voluntary redundancies, and inviting people express an interest. This is *not* committing to anything at this stage, but DH has expressed an interest. Nothing is likely to happen before the autumn at the earliest, and possibly not until the new year. DH has said that if he doesn't get VR in the first round, then he will try again in the second round (and posts the third, fourth etc...)
Yes, it's going to mean changes, but I'm looking on it as the Next Big Adventure. Financially we should be ok (we'll probably need to be a bit careful at least to begin with) and of course our routines will change (I'll admit this is going to be a bit difficult for me 
) but I'm not too worried about having him "under my feet all day" as a friend charmingly put it last night. For one thing, DH has plans for his retirement - things he wants to do, possibly some further study, clubs and activities would like to join ( he's a lot more outgoing socially than I am!). Plus, I can always find "activities" for him, such as clearing out the loft (it's almost all his stuff up there) if he gets bored! I don't think he'll want to help with the housework, and I'm ok with that, (he is well "trained " to pick up his "stuff" when I'm going to hoover / dust , he puts his clean and dirty clothes in the right places, and he can use the washing machine and dishwasher ) especially as he's a good cook and will probably be happy to take on more of the cooking. I did ask him whether he would like to take Freddie to some of his appointments for his arthritis injections, and the reply was "Not particularly". So no surprises there!
And now I've written an essay, and it's time to jump in the shower.

kittykatt, well that would certainly be a change! Me and my DH, we already have big plans for what we want to do for our retirement, but it's still decades (more than 21 years for me) away. We just like to talk about what we'll do when the kids grow up and move out, to not be surprised when the empty nester syndrome kicks in

Trissie, I think you and DH are very wise to make plans for the future, even though those plans may possibly change. How old is DBD now?
DH has left for the beer festival with his friends. I'm up, showered and dressed, I've taken Freddie out, had my breakfast (and given Fred a very small 2nd breakfast ) and had 30 minutes in my tiny front garden, mostly deadheading roses that objected to the torrential rain overnight. I've also had to remove a very curious Matilda from a bumblebee that had somehow found his way inside. Will she never learn?! She was stung on the paw a couple of years ago from too close and interaction with a bumble bee. I know they're usually quite placid, but they definitely don't like being prodded and batted with a curious paw!
It's starting to cloud over, so now would be a good time to start on the house. I'm playing catch up from yesterday, but that's ok, the snuggles and lap time with Jude were more than worth it.

*Laxapet for Jude* (she vomited up a huge hairball when we got home last night, so we need to keep things "moving" . Although she is short haired, her hair is very thick and dense)
Flea control for F,J and M (maybe leave Jude until tomorrow if she's still not feeling 100%?)
Ani inflammatory for Matilda before bed
Register new hoover (should really have done this before, but better late than never!)

Spray roses? (If it stays dry and settled? Everything is still far too wet after the rain yesterday evening and overnight)
