Franz Peter Schubert (/ˈʃuːbərt/; German: [fʁants ˈpeːtɐ ˈʃuːbɐt]; 31 January 1797 – 19 November 1828) was an Austrian composer of the late Classical and early Romantic eras. Despite his short life, Schubert left behind a vast oeuvre, including more than 600 Lieder (art songs in German) and other vocal works, seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music, and a large body of piano and chamber music. His major works include "Erlkönig", "Gretchen am Spinnrade", and "Ave Maria"; the Trout Quintet; the Symphony No. 8 in B minor (Unfinished); the Symphony No. 9 in C major (Great); the String Quartet No. 14 in D minor (Death and the Maiden); the String Quintet in C major; the Impromptus for solo piano; the last three piano sonatas; the Fantasia in F minor for piano four hands; the opera Fierrabras; the incidental music to the play Rosamunde; and the song cycles Die schöne Müllerin, Winterreise and Schwanengesang.

Born in the Himmelpfortgrund suburb of Vienna, Schubert showed uncommon gifts for music from an early age. His father gave him his first violin lessons and his elder brother gave him piano lessons, but Schubert soon exceeded their abilities. In 1808, at the age of eleven, he became a pupil at the Stadtkonvikt school, where he became acquainted with the orchestral music of Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven. He left the Stadtkonvikt at the end of 1813 and returned home to live with his father, where he began studying to become a schoolteacher. Despite this, he continued his studies in composition with Antonio Salieri and still composed prolifically. In 1821, Schubert was admitted to the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde as a performing member, which helped establish his name among the Viennese citizenry. He gave a concert of his works to critical acclaim in March 1828, the only time he did so in his career. He died eight months later at the age of 31, the cause officially attributed to typhoid fever, but believed by some historians to be syphilis.

Appreciation of Schubert's music while he was alive was limited to a relatively small circle of admirers in Vienna, but interest in his work increased greatly in the decades following his death. Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms and other 19th-century composers discovered and championed his works. Today, Schubert is considered one of the greatest composers in the history of Western classical music and his music continues to be widely performed.

Happy Sunday!

Up early to get as much done as possible before the kids come home. DH's plane is just off the coast of France, he will be home soon! Not till the party starts, though, so that's still on me (he has a layover in Germany). I feel strangely calm and yet nervous about getting everything done on time by myself, but I am hoping everything will go smoothly.

helia, girls are the best :-) and they really are their dad's princesses (though when I hear somebody announce the gender, I am generally like "oh, girls are the best, their mom's companions and their dad's princesses" and "oh, boys are the best, their dad's companions and they never steal their mom's clothing and makeup!" :-)
kittykatt, yes, today's the big day! Have a good one at church!

Image * * * Good Morning! * * * Image

trissie, thanks for the start ! Many things I like about Schubert. I have played and played his prelude on my old piano in my old house - mixed memories. So your DH is now on European ground, that's good to know. I hope your early hours of quiet allow you to get things done in preparation for the party (including, maybe, having time for you? depending on your needs). I feel relieved for you that your DH will be here for the upcoming week. LOL at the gender reveal comments.

kittykatt, have a good time at church !

Sunny morning, sunny forecast. The afternoon will be spent at the school, as it's the end-of-year school fair with each class performing a dance, and families eating and drinking and kids playing, so taht the school association earns money to subsidise school days out and such. Last year we volunteered but this year I don't have energy, and MrNG is preparing an important job interview on Wednesday and has a customer consulting thing on Tuesday 2 hours from home, so, working for this as well.
Hoping to find a few quiet moments, do some gardening, cook two payroll lunches, send email to DSisOlder and maybe finish my letter to DFriend J.

TADAs
up, read news but not for too long to rpeserve my sanity
meditated for a while
CUOP
made tea

TODO first
feed two lively lovely boys, and enjoy family breakfast
a bit of self care
pre-prepare easy lunch

I hope to BBL. Waving to all who will follow, if I don't.

trissie, I applied last Sunday, but only got an automatic-response email. Maybe they are waiting for more people to apply, maybe they've made a choice already. I don't really fit for the job, I mean I have the required skills, but they may think I'm too qualified or I would get bored after a while, or something. (which may be true, but working 3 kms from home is a huge reason for staying). Anyway I am looking at job offers several times a week. I should work on my resume some more, but it's online on at least one website, and visible.
Glad to know your DH is on the ground. Reading the news lately I understand you might be worried about a safe landing.

MrNG is working at his computer, I'm trying to get the kids to do their homework now since I don't want to face it after a whole afternoon in the hot sun.
Had a haircut yesterday. My hair is shorter (base of the nape) but it also looks greyer. I'm not ready for dying my hair yet...

TADAs
all fed, breakfast cleaned up
lol in
dw emptied
lol ou on drying rack
MrNG started a lol for some of his clothes
a bit of self care

TODO
have lunch ready for oven - cod fillet parmentier + snow peas (or snap peas?) from the garden in skillet
email to DSisOlder
see what was on my weekly list and make decisions
