The common starling (Sturnus vulgaris), also known simply as the starling in Great Britain and Ireland, and as European starling in North America, is a medium-sized perching bird in the starling family, Sturnidae. It is about 20 cm (8 in) long and has glossy black plumage with a metallic sheen, which is speckled with white at some times of the year. The legs are pink and the bill is black in winter and yellow in summer; young birds have browner plumage than the adults. Its gift for mimicry has been noted in literature including the Mabinogion and the works of Pliny the Elder and William Shakespeare.
The common starling builds an untidy nest in a natural or artificial cavity in which four or five glossy, pale blue eggs are laid. These take two weeks to hatch and the young remain in the nest for another three weeks. There are normally one or two breeding attempts each year. This species is omnivorous, taking a wide range of invertebrates, as well as seeds and fruit.
Large flocks, known as murmurations, typical of this species can be beneficial to agriculture by controlling invertebrate pests; however, starlings can also be pests themselves when they feed on fruit and sprouting crops. Laura, we use "till" as well, and sometimes "cash desk", or sometimes, when in an unknown store where the tills aren't clearly signposted, simply ask, "where do I pay for this, please?'
Gma, I'm glad you're having fun at the cabin, and able to meet people and socialise, but sorry they ran out of food. Congratulations for time time you win the prize with your quilt. (BTW, as we've been talking about the English language, "quilt" often means something slightly different over here, and historically more often used as a synonym for the traditional "eiderdown", or more recently (but this has now fallen out of favour) to describe a duvet as a "continental quilt") When I went to a qut exhibition for the first time with my DDeparted DF HE, I had a moment of mental readjustment!
And they were all beautiful, with so much skill and hard work gone into each one. ( Over here , this was traditionally called. "Patchwork quilt" but that term also seems to have fallen out of favour now).
Dogged, that's a lot of pressure on you to get the apartment straight when you're still working such long hours. Maybe you could start with putting away those items you'd rather the inspectors.didnt see? That would give you peace of mind. Then could you take a bin bag and just pick up anything that's obviously rubbish? Don't worry about sorting it, just get it out of the apartment. If you can do another "stash and dash" and get things off the floor that shouldn't be there, then that would help tremendously.
But do try not to worry too much -Im guessing their main purpose is to make sure no one is living in dangerous or insanitary conditions, or growing or making anything they shouldn't be!!!
Today is forecast to be hot (over 30 C) again. So I'll do some housework during the heat of the day, and also do something with my eBay stash. My plan is to pack up the contents of each box as I list it, label it so I know what each box contains, and then take it down to the garage so it's out of the house. I would like to make some progress with this as the boxes are current in a crate cluttering up the kitchen. DH is out today with DBIL, and also working away for the latter half of next week, so it's a good opportunity.
I also need to bake today, but don't need to do anything about lunch, as DH is going to the south Devon railway tomorrow, for an induction course. He's hoping to volunteer either there, or on one of the other restored steam railways when he retires.
As for the garden, the front garden had a good soak last night. I need to try and bring the hose through the house so I can fill up my water butts , and also water those parts of the back garden that are really dry and stressed . It's an Undertaking (especially as the manufacturer 's definition of "leak free joins" differs from mine
) but something that would bring benefits and keep the garden looking good . As I don't want feline "help" with this job, I'll need to pick a time when the cats are all asleep.

Update, I've taken Fred out - just as well I didn't leave it any longer as the tarmac was already feeling hot to my hand, but still bearable. Any hotter, and it would have been too hot for his paws.
The delicate wash is going through the machine, and is nearly finished I've had some time in my front garden while it was still mostly in the shade, and I've tidied /dusted the sitting room and hall, so we look respectable. Next will be to take the rubbish down to the wheelie bins and then bake a cake while the kitchen is still in the shade.

Today, we need to be out of the bnb by 10 a.m. mainly because that is when the session at the conference starts. Ds + F are going to join us, which will be nice! Then, we're going to a GF pizza place that the girls found. I will opt for a salad if that's a possibility. We will then travel to ds + F's home!! I hope to get in a quick grocery run this afternoon as well as explore their neighborhood. I wouldn't be surprised if dh finds a coffee shop and does some work.

Morning all. Kittykat I can't believe it's that hot there. I think I'm in a weird corner this year. Mid July and my heater still wants to go at night. Next week is supposed to warm up Then maybe my plants will take off. 
Ohh doggedly that is some timing for inspection. Kittykat has amazing advice cause that would just make me panic if I let it. You can do it.
Ooh sounds like a lovely time helian
Anyway on the bird theme. Disasters of having pets. Funny and sad and well dh is a small critter rescuer.
so he's sitting reading news on his computer. I managed to sleep till almost 7 somehow. He heard a noise.. little black Coalle managed to bring in a live bird only barely injured he said. He rescued it. Kept it in his hands for a few minutes till it came to it's senses. Let it go outside. Between the huntress cats are my big white fluffy dog poor thing flew off towards the woodshed to Casper who promptly snatched it out of the air. Dh was rather upset as he rescued it. That's why I don't try attracting more birds . Dangerous territory in my yard.
Well now I have to figure out my day. Several things going on and I am feeling slightly guilty but for no good reason. Dh had a bunch of drain rock delivered yesterday and he's trying to figure out how to set up some landscape stuff with ds 26. Most of it probably doesn't include me. I want to do whb stuff in here and music prep when I get songs. And well I should go check out the neglected garden and greenhouse at dad's. And i bought him some curtains. Have to figure out how to hang them.
Here's the sticker. He called last night. Half spur of the moment.. he needs to learn to plan ahead a little. He was thinking of going for a drive and getting running boards for his truck. Mom was doing good but yesterday was harder again and she probably couldn't go along. 5 hours driving. I told him I didn't have the whole day to be there with the projects stuff etc. I probably could have made it work... i would have had to be there already and stuck there all afternoon. Lots I could do there. If he had decided a few days ago or maybe I could go Wednesday next week so I can be expecting it and plan for it? Am I supposed to drop everything so he can get out? He needs the break .... also his decision making skills leave something to be desired lately. I know I claimed the day for myself.. I also know I should go do those things out there but just a couple hours not all day. Help...
Now I have to figure out the day. And I will make myself even more guilty if it's not productive cause I could have let him go.
