Re: Dolly Mixture Monday
Dolly mixture is a British confection, consisting of a variety of multi-coloured fondant shapes, such as cubes and cylinders with subtle flavourings, and sugar-coated jellies.
The origin of the name is uncertain. It has been passed down through family history that the name came from the daughter of one of its salesmen, Mr. Charlie Clayton, who managed to secure a large order when they were being shown to potential buyers ("Dolly" was the pet name for his eldest daughter, Dorothy).
In the UK, Dolly Mixture is produced under the Barratt brand, now owned by Valeo Confectionery previously known as Tangerine Confectionery.
The Goon Show character Bluebottle was frequently rewarded or bribed, with a quantity of dolly mixture, jelly babies, or similar sweets.

Re: Dolly Mixture Monday
Good morning everyone, and happy Monday!
I'm glad you had a lovely evening with your friends, Helian. Two puppies sound like a lot of work!
Good to see you, Bama!
WTG with the decluttering, Dogged. A sunset walk with Germane sounds very nice.
Today there are several admin jobs that have to be done: email menu choices over to the pub for parish lunch (do that mid morning in case there are any people who decide at the last minute they would like to join us) , email councillor re lack of bin emptying , even thought the council insist they have been back and done it., and email the county council re proposed road closure that's already taken place earlier this year for the same company, asking why the work wasn't completed the first time - they certainly had long enough! So all that should keep me occupied. It's supposed to be hot today, so I want to garden and go for my walk before it gets too warm. And, of course, there's always the housework!

Re: Dolly Mixture Monday
LOL, Kittykatt, today's start could not be more timely. I was listening to a Daisy Dalrymple book while cleaning up after Germane, and one of the characters was offered Dolly mixture. Now I can picture what was in the bag!
Have they not picked up your garbage yet? In the heat that you have been having, that can't be good. I hope that you get through to them.

Re: Dolly Mixture Monday
Hi! You got my attention by mentioning a sweet treat that I love!! The colours certainly became muted after they went to "natural" colourings and started using carrot juice and other things. Taste certainly didn't change much. It's a very sweet treat that gets this woman with a sweet tooth in just the right spot. I also love a lot of their other treats.

Re: Dolly Mixture Monday
Good morning, Dogged, L. Ann and Cathy!
The magic show sounds fun, L.Ann - I'm sore DGD will enjoy that.
Dogged, it was the garden waste that we pay extra for, over and above the Council tax that hadn't been collected , so not so much of a health hazard, but there's definitely a principle at stake. Fortunately, we have two very good local councillors, who take their responsibilities very seriously, and who positively relish sorting out easily "fixable" problems like this. Anyway, less than an hour after my email, a small truck rolled up and emptied my bin.
Cathy, when I was small, Dolly Mixture came in little bags - big enough for a small treat, but not so much to spoil your appetite for lunch
You're right about the colourings, they were definitely brighter back in the 1960s and early 70s!
It's funny how one's tastes change over the years - I used to love them as a small child for a Saturday morning treat, but now they're definitely too sweet, and I'm no longer very keen on the texture either.
So far, I've dealt with two of the three emails I needed to send. The email to the County Council is still in draft form, as it needs to be to ed down and reorganised into a logical order, so it doesn't come across as an insane rant! That one isn't so urgent, so can wait a day or so.
I've taken Freddie out, and had a productive hour in my garden. I'm now going for a walk before I do a little in my front garden.
