Re: Fig Newton Friday @ TDD
Newtons are a Nabisco-trademarked version of a cookie filled with sweet fruit paste. Fig Newtons are the most popular variety. They are produced by an extrusion process. Their distinctive shape is a characteristic that has been adopted by competitors, including generic fig bars sold in many markets.
History
The Newton was invented by Philadelphia baker Charles Roser, who likely took inspiration for the recipe from the fig roll, a baked good introduced to the U.S. by British immigrants. Roser used a machine invented by James Henry Mitchell which allowed for the extrusion of fig jam and cookie dough at the same time into a long, continuous roll. The recipe was sold to the Kennedy Biscuit company, and entered mass production at the F. A. Kennedy Steam Bakery in 1891. The cookie was christened the "Newton" by the plant manager, James Hazen, using the name of the Boston suburb of Newton, Massachusetts.
The Kennedy Biscuit Company was one of eight bakeries bought out by William Moore in 1889 to create the New York Biscuit Company. This company merged with the American Biscuit Company in 1898 to form the "National Biscuit Company", or Nabisco. The recipe for Newtons along with the manufacturing machine were among the assets brought into the new company, and the cookies were trademarked as "Fig Newtons".
In 1991, Nabisco held a 100th-anniversary celebration of the cookie in the city of Newton, Massachusetts.
Since 2012, the "Fig" has been dropped from the product name (now just "Newtons"). According to Nabisco, one reason this was done is that the cookie had long been available in other flavors, like strawberry, raspberry, and blueberry. Another reason was a general negative perception of figs, and their association with "old" things.

Re: Fig Newton Friday @ TDD
Good morning, (good night?
) Dogged, and thank you for starting off. Fig newtons sound very like our fig rolls. (I am not a fan! Interestingly, neither is anyone I know. If they ever appear with coffee after church, people politely decline. But they must have their fan base somewhere as they're still sold in all the supermarkets!
) Thank you for your kind words about parish lunch. It's going to be trial and error for the first few months as we find out what people would like to do, (menu, price range etc) but I think and hope it's possible to build it up again into the thriving group it used to be.
Gma, you truly have a "heart of giving" always doing so much for other people. How wise to know when to stop working and get to bed!
I'm enjoying a little lie in this morning and a quiet house. I turned my alarm off last night, and everyone else is still asleep. It's a beautiful morning, and I have a free day, so I need to make sure I use it wisely. I would like to have a good set in my garden, and I need to do laundry. I also want to take those boxes out of the house and down to the garage, then I can say that job is completed. Other jobs while DH is away these few days clean the windows, some decluttering in the bedroom, take the bag of donations to the clothing bank, there are a few odds and ends in the kitchen that needs to be dealt with. Maybe I can even look at those curtains for the kitchen? I also need to do the start of month banking, so that's first on the list before I get up.

LOL, Kittykatt, you have found the person who is keeping those fig rolls in circulation. I love Fig Newtons. I don't actually get them often because they are so expensive, but I do understand that it's because they have actual fig in them.
WTG on getting those boxes sorted. That is the kind of job that can just keep expanding to take all of your time, but you vanquished them.
I am pretty much done for the night? morning? It really is morning. I think that the dawn chorus starts in about an hour. I have the bread cooling and just need to wrap it in a tea towel and put it in a canister, and change Germane's pee pads and I can go to bed.
Have a good day in the meantime!
Friday
Cleaned up after Germane X 2
Threaded the polka dot plant through the support
Set up small drying rack
Hung the delicates and laundry bags
Removed bread from breadmaker to cool
Moved dishes from dw to drying racks
Put away dw cart
Goals
Short Term
Call the animal hospital to see about renewing Germane’s Apoquel–done
FACE Finances: check that there is money in chequing account=--done
Charge the battery in the tire inflator–done
Check Tires–done
Friday Goals:
Go to animal hospital to pick up Germane’s Apoquel
Pick up dog food if they get it in stock
If not, drive around to other animal hospitals to try to buy dog food.
Deposit OAS cheque
Go to Reitmans to look at jeans
Stop at drug store for Ibruprofen?
Check govt web site for Record Of Employment
Contact old employer for information on final pay cheque
FACE Finances: work on retirement budget: start going through bank statements
Run the dw
Bring recycling to basement

Re: Fig Newton Friday @ TDD
Sleep well, Dogged! WTG with the work on financial matters.
I've also done the start of month financial things. And replied to DF HT's email about parish lunch, giving her the date for the August lunch, and an outline of plans so far for the Christmas lunch (Yes, I know, it's only the 1st August, but everywhere gets booked up so early these days).
And the good news that after yesterday, I now have a team who have offered to help with the Christmas parish lunch. (I'm sure there will be some dissenting voices who will complain that a buffet in the space at the back of the church isn't a "proper" Christmas lunch, but I'm prepared for that. They will be very politely told that I'm sorry they don't like this year's arrangements, so perhaps they would like to do *all* the organising for a more "traditional" Christmas lunch at a "venue" next year!)
The cats have been fed, but I need to jump quickly in the shower so I am dressed by the time the postman arrives. Apparently he's going to deliver a parcel today, and it could be as soon as 30 minutes from now!!

Re: Fig Newton Friday @ TDD
That's nice to have volunteers to help with the Christmas lunch, Kitty!
I like fig newtons too, Doggedly. That was the only cookie my mom would buy us kids for years. . .I prefer other cookies, but I do like fig newtons. I haven't had one in ages.
WTG getting in your walk already, L Ann.
This is the second week in a row that my weight has bumped up on a Friday morning. It's like my body knows this is the day I weigh in. Or maybe it's because I did strength training yesterday? But, I met with my trainer on Friday last week.
I will try to be more active today and go for a long walk; no running today bc of the 5K tomorrow. I'll also try to be more austere with my food intake, although we are hosting friends for dinner tonight.
*sheesh* I gotta live too.
Today, I'm visiting Mom, leaving in about an hour if I can get ready. I'll stop by a craft store on the way back. I'd like to get in a walk this afternoon, and I need to do some cleaning and help dh with cooking as we're hosting new friends R and L tonight.
Next:
- back exercises
- s2s and self care
- some qt
Later:
- gather things
- visit Mom
- craft store!
- walk
- make the bed
- progress cleaning the fridge
- sheets on guest beds
- tidy living room
- dust living room
- spiff main bathroom
- can I start going through my bins in the play room?
- lunch at some point
- perhaps, bake brownies
- help dh cook dinner: coffee-rubbed fish, rice, roasted cauliflower w. parmesan, cantaloupe; brownies and/ or raspberry sorbet for dessert
- host new friends R and L for dinner
- after dinner clean up
- duo
- update health apps
TaDas!
- up; weighed self
- coffee
- email deletions + weather website - sunny, high of 76*F! - Perfect!

Re: Fig Newton Friday @ TDD
Good morning/ good afternoon, L.Ann and Helian.
I hope your appointment goes well, L.Ann.
Helian,.your dinner recipe sounds delicious!
I seem to have some t list of the morning messaging various people about the Christmas parish lunch. It's good, because each person I have messaged has thought no of someone.else who has experience and should be able to give advice and guidance, but it is time consuming. I'm encouraged though, because everyone so far thinks it's a good idea.
I'm just waiting for the washing machine to finish, then I'll take those boxes down to the garage and have some time in my garden.
