Spangles was a brand of boiled sweets manufactured by Mars Ltd in the United Kingdom from 1950 to the early 1980s.[1] They were sold in a paper packet with individual sweets originally unwrapped but later cellophane wrapped. They were distinguished by their shape which was a rounded square with a circular depression on each face.
When Spangles were introduced in 1950, sweets were still on ration, and the price of sweets had to be accompanied by tokens or points from one's ration book, but Spangles required only one point instead of the two required for other sweets and chocolate. This bonus, accompanied by effective marketing, made Spangles even more popular. American actor William Boyd was chosen to front the advertising campaign as a character he made famous in numerous films, Hopalong Cassidy, along with the slogan "Hoppy's favourite sweet".
Spangles were discontinued in 1984, and briefly reintroduced in 1995, including in Woolworths outlets in the UK, though only four varieties were available – tangerine, lime, blackcurrant and Old English.
The Tunes brand was the last remaining relation of the Spangles brand, sharing the shape and wrapping of the original product, but it has also now been discontinued.
The regular Spangles packet (labelled simply "Spangles") contained a variety of translucent, fruit-flavoured sweets: strawberry, blackcurrant, orange, pineapple, lemon and lime, and cola. Originally the sweets were not individually wrapped, but later a waxed paper, and eventually a cellophane wrapper was used. The tube was striped, a bright orange-red colour alternating with silver. It bore the word "Spangles" in large letters.
During the early 1970s Mars Ltd commissioned a redesign of the packaging using a distinctive seventies style font and bespoke typeface. The new typeface and packaging designs were created by Neville Uden.
Over the production period many different single-flavour varieties were introduced including Acid Drop, Barley Sugar, Blackcurrant, Liquorice, Peppermint, Spearmint and Tangerine. A white mint Spangle, complete with hole, was produced as a competitor to the Polo mint.
Spangles were mentioned in The Kinks' song "Art Lover", from their 1981 album, Give the People What They Want.

L.Ann, I'm glad the temperature and humidity have both dropped for you. We've also been enjoying cooler temperatures recently. Apparently another heatwave is on the way, but we shall see. The forecasters do like to get excited about the remotest possibilities!
CL, you're being very productive during your time away. I need to get the main details for the Christmas parish lunch sorted early, as everything gets so booked up, including the church (I actually sat down with MQ, the verger at the end of May to decide on the date and book the church!)
Helian, I hope you had a good visit with your um and that your dinner went well.
Dogged, you had a very productive day with your errands. Ikwym about all the discretionary in income disappearing in on the NN for see t day of the month!
Yesterday was reasonably productive - I had a good session in my garden, got all the laundry folded and PA and did 15 minutes decluttering the bedroom. I started on one of the drawers I Der the bed, a d managed to discard a few things, but when I opened up the plastic box with some family items - very old photo albums belonging to my parents with their wedding photos, my christening etc, which I'm keeping as I've already been through and weeded out those boxes of loose photos that no one knows who they are, I came across my grandmother's autograph album . I don't know if anyone is familiar with the concept, but it was a small book where you asked friends / relatives to write something in it and maybe draw a little sketch. I need to look through it again, with a very bright light, as much of the writing is in copperplate and the ink has faded but it was fascia. I think she was given it when she was about 7 years old , so there's lots of girlish comments from her friends, but it gets both interesting and sad later on, because what we would now call her teenage years coincided with the Great War, and there are several references to young men she knew who never came back.
(It all turned out ok for her in the end though, as she met my grandfather, and when WW2 came round he was in a reserved occupation - something to do with market gardening / food production I believe - so wasn't called up to fight).
Today I have a long list of things I would like to do while DH is still away. I almost certainly won't get them all done, but anything is progress!

I just completed 3 hours of cont ed via computer. It's a new way to learn for this "old lady." Not sure about my retention long term, but I did enough to get the certificate, which is what I need for partial requirement to renew my license. So far I've found free things. This makes 9 of 24 needed by October.
Relatives came to day to visit mother and me. We went to Red Lobster and enjoyed visiting. These were 2 cousins, 1 wife came too, children of my mother's next older sister. Mother is the only person living from her generation. I love all my cousins. They are all great people! (I might be prejudiced)

Sleep well, Gma! I'm glad you had a lovely time with your extended family. I think more andore studying / testing is moving online these days. DH had to do 2 exams for his volunteering that he hopes to do on the steam railway, and they were both online. Iirc, one was a multiple choice type exam, and the other required more lengthy answers, but was an "open book" type exam where he could refer to the information (health and safety, company policy etc) he had been given on the induction day, and it was really a case of showing he understood and could implement appropriately all the information he had been given.
I should really get moving, but Matilda is asleep on the bed and I don't want to disturb her...

So, Matilda moved! I'm up, showered and dressed, I've taken Fred out, fed every and had a phone call from DH. It sounds as though they are all having a great time - today is the flower show/ summer fete at DBIL's village, and DH has been helping set everything up this 3. Fortunately the weather is perfect, dry and sunny but not too hot.
I really need to clean those windows, do I'm writing this for accountability.
I'm up, showered and dressed, I've taken Fred out, fed every and had a phone call from DH. It sounds as though they are all having a great time - today is the flower show/ summer fete at DBIL's village, and DH has been helping set everything up this 3. Night GMA. Sentimental things are hard to make decisions about, kittykatt. DD32 was up with a stomach ache several times during the night. Not sure if it is a virus or something she ate.
