Re: Otto Wichterle Wednesday @ TDD -C&C
Otto Wichterle; 27 October 1913 – 18 August 1998) was a Czech chemist, best known for his invention of modern soft contact lenses.
Wichterle was the author or co-author of approximately 180 patents and over 200 publications. The studies and independent books covered various aspects of organic, inorganic and macromolecular chemistry, polymer science, and biomedical materials. He held a higher number of patents for organic synthesis, polymerization, fibres, the synthesis and shaping of biomedical materials, production methods and measuring devices related to biomedical products. This was typical of his attitude to scientific research, which, he considered, ought to serve society and its requirements by any means possible, without distinction as to "pure" and "applied" science.

Re: Otto Wichterle Wednesday @ TDD -C&C
Good morning, trissie, and thank you for the interesting start. I had no idea who invented soft contact lenses, and I'm sure that many myopic people have cause to thank Otto Wichterle.
I have been booking my car and hotel for my next visit to my dbrother. The cheapest rooms were not available in the week that I had chosen and had run by my brother, and while I was booking the medium-priced rooms disappeared. So I pushed it back a week, and was able to book the cheapest room, and then changed my car booking. My dbrother won't mind. He always says "Whenever you want to come, I'll be here."
I think that really is all that I plan to get done for tonight. I will play a game and listen to an audio book until I get tired.
Have a good day!

Re: Otto Wichterle Wednesday @ TDD -C&C
Good morning Trissie and thank you for another interesting start, and a very necessary invention. And I'd never heard of Otto Wichterle before either!
I'm glad your DMum's appointment was successful, Gma. How kind and thoughtful of your DSis#3 to send your DMum a letter she can read for herself and share with you. And what a lovely idea to take her flowers for her wedding anniversary.
Sleep well, Dogged! WTG booking your next trip to your DBro and getting a good price.
This is the lunch box I'm looking at for DH:
https://www.lakeland.co.uk/28161/melii- ... -accordion
It ticks all the boxes for him (" compartments") and it also ticks all the boxes for me (food- safe plastic, dishwasher proof, robust construction with a three year guarantee. If it's designed to withstand being thrown around by primary school kids, then it should be able to withstand the rigours of a railway yard!
)
I will admit I'm beginning to feel like I'm knitting out a kid for school!
I need to make a list of all the "stuff" he's said he needs. I expect there will be more after today!
DH was up bright and early this morning.
I think he's planning to go down to the steam railway at least once a week when he retires. This would be ideal, as he's doing something he really enjoys that doesn't involve sitting I. Front of a TV/ computer all day, and it would give me some uninterrupted time to make phone calls, do those admin tasks etc. So, a win win!
Today is going to be the day I make at least I e of those DPCs. Other tasks, feed Izzy, walk that bag of donations over to the charity bank, clean the kitchen and do something in my garden. It's going to be hot again, and I suspect humid and muggy as it's cloudy ATM. So, I need to do outdoor tasks at the beginning and end of the day, when it's cooler, and indoor tasks during the heat of the day.

Re: Otto Wichterle Wednesday @ TDD -C&C
I'm sitting here dressed to jog and drinking my coffee.
Kitty, I like the design of bento boxes! I hope dh will like his new lunch box.
trissie, I hadn't heard of Wichterle before! I'm thrilled to learn about a Czech scientist! I hope your day is going well.
So glad you were able to book a car and a hotel to visit your brother, Doggedly.
We got rain last night and it is gray and cool this morning, which feels great! I have no meetings/ appointments on my calendar today -- but lots to do.
Dh and dd27 are considering scrapping (or moving) their backpacking trip; there is significant amount of rain forecast to fall every day they're backpacking, with a total rainfall of about 1.5 inches over 4 days. That is a lot if you're living in it 24/7.
Main Goals for Today - Perhaps too ambitious?

3. payroll: GGT spreadsheet finished
4. Towel and sheet laundry
5. Clean sheets on bed
6. Email/ Texts - coffee dates with friends - MM, AA, SS (JK also)
7. Reserve bnb for weekend away with dh

Re: Otto Wichterle Wednesday @ TDD -C&C
Morning all. Kittykat is that just a new hobby for dh to do or a very part time job with the railway? Sounds interesting. Good for him finding something ahead to keep busy with.
Helian that is a lot of rain for a backpack trip. Maybe they can reschedule it.
I'm sitting here with more coffee. Had a soak. My body is telling me it needs a slow day. Last week was 4 days of freight. Then Monday I gathered a whole pile of seasonal stuff that wasn't down and made the boys bring some down. Before unloading the truck at the end of the day. Yesterday was full 8 hours receiving again. My body has not had complete less work days for a while. Hopefully the freight can be finished today or mostly.
I've half scheduled my day already. I wasn't going to go to mom and dad's and I was going to try not to let him ask last minute but yesterday after supper he called. I think an appointment or something this morning. Going out from 8 till 10. Then coffee with h at 1030.
And hopefully I can get ds to cooperate with a dental appointment at 2. They used to book 6 month check up and mail a reminder for 2 weeks before. I think they gave up on the mail. It's on all the receipts for other family members but you get a reminder call the day before. I'm going to have to start using my phone calendar as ds does not do well with last minute notice. I found out yesterday morning. Fell asleep early last night and forgot to tell him. Now I could miss him if he doesn't get up before I leave. He's on summer break schedule... who knows when he gets up.
And then I have a big bowl of berries I have got to do something with. It's cleaned and sitting in the fridge but they were so soft they are practically juice already. Pectin is being difficult to find. We have some in the store but it's a different brand and it has no instructions. The other kind had jam recipes. There's nothing online but finding the recipe and figuring out how much Pectin is needed. I think I'm going to add some sugar to taste and boil it for a bit and turn it into syrup sauce who knows what. If I can find motivation later.
I had a soak. Should at least get up and do the kitchen before I go. Dh is leaving in a few. I am losing ground on routines again. My dw should have been empty and filled last night. I put the leftovers in the fridge and nothing else. Gotta reboot that and figure out how to not leave such a mess.

Re: Otto Wichterle Wednesday @ TDD -C&C
When are you going to visit your brother, Dogged?
and how did DH like his adventure today, kittykatt?
helia, I envy you your rain. It's in the high 90's here!
and I see lauralind is making jam!
hi Peaches!
I've always known about Otto Wichterle (he is one of our most famous scientist, and also I wear contact lenses), but what I didn't know is that he went to the same high school as my mother (of course, forty years earlier), and his mother's family and mine must have known each other! You see, my great-grandfather ran a store and a large farm and he was the only one at that time to own a threshing machine in the village, so people would rent it from him. And Otto Wichterle's maternal grandfather happened to own a large farm in the same village!
Of course, I could come up with more interesting 7-people connected relations (my mother kinda dated the at that time Bulgarian president's nephew who later went on to become embassador in China, so he must have met Mao Zedong, hence I am three people removed from the infamous Chinese leader!
), but it's kinda cool nevertheless!
Home from work. It's HOT. My office does not have A/C, and neither does our house. I really don't want to do anything, but I have to, so I will be brave and list a set of three and work it!
TaDas
- survived day at work
- DS13's medical apt
- home
- talked to all kids
- load of darks sorted and running
ToDos
- morning routine
- start dinner
- fold & put away laundry
