I'll never forget my absentminded question to Dr when I had to have several doses of cillan-type antibiotic for pneumonia 15 years ago. "What did people back in the wild West do when this happened to them? ". "They died," he answered. Of course, every bout of pneumonia didn't result in death, but it was pretty sobering to realize he thought mine would. So, thank you Dr Fleming!

Best traveling wishes for these interesting treks of family members - what fun!

Thank you for starting us off, Kittykatt, and for the reminder to be grateful to the people made the improvements in medicine.
That was good planning to bring the insulated bag so that you would not find yourself in need of modern medicine.

trissie wrote: Fri Aug 15, 2025 9:16 am To clarify - no, I will not have the house to myself all week, because... I'm leaving on the jet plane (though I know exactly when I am coming back :-) )
I heard the musical notes even before I got to the parenthesis, LOL.
You must be so looking forward to your vacation. And kudos to your DH! We are always hearing about husbands who won't parent their own children, so it's reassuring to hear about the men who are good fathers and want to spend time with their children.

helia, you will be happy to have had your relaxing evening as you go through your busy morning, no doubt!

Your poor DD32, L.Ann. I hope that she feels better soon, and that you are able to everything that you need rescheduled.

That was a wake up call, Harriet! It wasn't really that long ago that people would refer to their first family, as diseases could wipe out all of the children in a family and the parents would have to start over.

When I got up, my back was not interested in participating in any activities, so I had a veeeery slow start that involved no bending. Germane did get her treats, but her dish was lowered to the floor with a grabber stick, LOL. I was able to scrub out the sink and basin and start the rice pots soaking, and put on a pot of coffee. I figured that if I just waited it out my back would relent, as I'm not really prone to back issues. And sure enough, while I've been sitting here I can feel it loosening up.

Thank you for the start, kittykatt! The discovery of Penicillin was one of the major breakthroughs in medicine, and contributed significantly to the increasing life expectancy throughout the 20th century for everyone. Beth, in Louisa Mae Alcott's book Little Women, died from scarlet fever. It would have easily been curable with penicillin. Childbed fever, also caused by streptococcus bacteria, was another cause of death "way back then" that we never hear about now. Thanks to handwashing (Lister and Semmelweiss) and penicillin (Fleming)!
Vaccination development, especially smallpox and diphtheria, also reduced mortality among children, who then were able to live into adulthood. One of the consequences of that was the great European migration to America, where there was plenty of open land to settle, as families grew larger when children didn't die, but there was not enough land for all of them to inherit.
Another important advancement in medicine was identification and use of oxytocin, which significantly has reduced hemorrhage during childbirth, contributing to less death from childbirth.

The shop where I get my oil changed told me I needed tires aligned. I took it to a different shop, where I buy my tires. They checked it with their machine and manually, No, everything is fine. Saved me $.

I stayed home, loaded DW and cleaned my K counters while waiting for my car. (I live 5 blocks from the tire shop, so they brought me home, then delivered the car.) Now I need to head to mother's pretty soon, to meet with friends to have an afternoon coffee party with mother :D .

(I've gone outside several time to look at the clean steps I powerwashed a few days ago. They look wonderful! :D )

Woohoo on getting the tires taken care of and saving money, Gma. Enjoy the fruit of your labour in those clean steps.

Hi, Peaches

My back is back to normal, so I have made a start. I would like to get my breadmaker going and then call my db for a phone visit.

Friday
Cleaned up after dog X 4
Put on a pot of coffee
Scrubbed out sink and basin
Put rice pots in to soak
Put away some of the dry laundry
Washed 2 basinsful of dishes
Put rice on to cook
Set up breadmaker: found that the paddle won’t be able to move
Set up newer breadmaker

I'm done with the GGT emails. I've done my larger things for the day. Now, it's 3:30. I should go for a walk but I'm very sleepy -- and I'm sore from my work out yesterday. And it's quite hot now. Maybe I'll follow L Ann's lead and read a book for a while and then get back to it.

L Ann, the flash mob dance sounds like fun for DD32!! And the dragon race tomorrow too.
Mmm.... the breadmaker, Doggedly! Happy visiting with dbro.
Enjoy the afternoon coffee party, Gma!

Hello, everyone!

Trissie, your DH is definitely a keeper! I hope DBD enjoyed her celebration.

Enjoy your quiet house, Helian! Is the down turn in students likely to be a long term thing, or just temporary?

Good to "see" you, Harriet!

Dogged, our bread maker in is very temperamental too. It insists on the "extra strong" Canadian flour, and refuses to produce a loaf using the normal "strong" bread flour.

Gma, I loved all of the Little Women series as a child, but re reading it with adult eyes, one realises just how far medical science has come since then! Interestingly, scarlet fever made a comeback here in the SW around 20 years ago, and you're right, with modern anti biotics and prompt treatment, it was just are relax minor illness(I don't think any of the children were hospitalised. My DF P's DD who was about 7 at the time, caught it, and was "cross" rather than ill with it.)

I hope you have some uninterrupted erupted time with your book, L Ann.

Hi, Peaches!

It's been a very good day. The weather has been perfect, and I spent a lot of time in my garden, both doing jobs out there, and also sitting reading on the shade :D On the home front, I e ordered another couple of shirts for DH, cut Matilda's nails, fed Izzy and got the laundry up to date. Oh, and I fed everyone here as well! I just need to plate Matilda's second supper (this one has the Plaque Off mixed inz to hopefully help clean her teeth!) and then I'm off to bed. The house will still be there tomorrow.
