Re: George Stephenson Saturday
George Stephenson (9 June 1781 – 12 August 1848) was a British civil engineer and mechanical engineer during the Industrial Revolution. Renowned as the "Father of Railways", Stephenson was considered by the Victorians as a great example of diligent application and thirst for improvement. His chosen rail gauge, sometimes called "Stephenson gauge", was the basis for the 4-foot-8+1⁄2-inch (1.435 m) standard gauge used by most of the world's railways.
Pioneered by Stephenson, rail transport was one of the most important technological inventions of the 19th century and a key component of the Industrial Revolution. Built by George and his son Robert's company Robert Stephenson and Company, the Locomotion No. 1 was the first steam locomotive to carry passengers on a public rail line, the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825. George also built the first public inter-city railway line in the world to use locomotives, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, which opened in 1830.
The development of railways which acted as a stimulus for the Industrial Revolution by facilitating the transport of raw materials and manufactured goods. George Stephenson, with his work on the Stockton and Darlington Railway and the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, paved the way for the railway engineers who followed, such as his son Robert, his assistant Joseph Locke who carried out much work on his own account and Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Stephenson was farsighted in realising that the individual lines being built would eventually be joined, and would need to have the same gauge. The standard gauge used throughout much of the world is due to him.
The centenary of George's birth was celebrated in 1881 at Crystal Palace by 15,000 people, and it was George who was featured on the reverse of the five pound note issued by the Bank of England between 1990 and 2003. The Stephenson Railway Museum in North Shields is named after George and Robert Stephenson.

Re: George Stephenson Saturday
Good morning, everyone, and happy Saturday!
Helia, I think you're right and Jude at any rate, is psychic -while.we.were.havi g supper yes5 evening I thought to myself that it would be a good opportunity to cut Jude's nails afterwards. Immediately Jude got up and ran upstairs!
I'll try again today.
Dogged, you got lots done -WTG!
Gma, "slow and steady wins the race" so not by bit you'll get there with your sewing room.
It's a beautiful morning, sunny and pleasantly cool so far. I can hear the honking of Canada geese - are they thinking of migrating already? Matilda woke me for a gap of pokey paw with my feet
and is now lying next to me looking angelic.
DH is out with his friends today, and I really must do some housework and a few admin tasks. And I would like to have some time sitting in my garden if it stays pleasant and doesn't get too humid. Oh, and I need to feed Izzy this morning (DF CW is back later today), and order DH's lunch box and some anti condensation paint for the bathroom ceiling (DH is going to visit his DBro next weekend, so then would be an ideal time to paint that ceiling! The flat bit I need to do is tiny, so shouldn't take long.)
Have a good day, everyone!

Re: George Stephenson Saturday
Crossing my fingers that the sitting in the garden does happen for you, kittykatt!
I spent several hours yesterday dealing with the chokeberries. I have about 8 litres of pure juice, and a kitchen that is not purple
Made two batches of syrup yesterday and will continue today, and also I need to juice the fallen apples and sterilize the product. My parents are coming sometimes afternoon, the house is somehow mess again, I have a cake to bake and three loads of laundry to do. But I can do it, right?

Re: George Stephenson Saturday
Yay for a kitchen that is not purple, Trissie!
You are such an accomplished cake baker and decorator - what cake are you baking for DBD?
The forecast is for sun all day, and slightly cooler than yesterday, so I am going to prioritise taking my folding chair to a shady patch (the patio is a sun trap, so this time of year is scorching during the day, but nice in the evening!) I feel I need to make the most of the next couple of days of dry heat and sunshine, as rain is forecast for the beginning of next week. Of course, it may not materialise, but even if it just turns very humid again, it's still no fun to sit out in it.
Also, DH is off work next week. We have already had a discussion about him taking some time to sort through his tools in the garage and store them.in the smart new tool boxes he has acquired. Monday would be ideal for this!
Jude is now asleep on the bed, but if I move very carefully I should be able to get up without disturbing her.

Re: George Stephenson Saturday
Trissie, I googled banana molehill cake and it looks delicious! But I think our ideas of "simple" differ. A lot!
I had coffee with DH this morning before he left to spend the day with his friends. Ibe taken Fred out and had my breakfast. I'm going to do a little in my front garden while it's in the shade, and then tackle the house.
