Isaac Merritt Singer (October 27, 1811 – July 23, 1875) was an American inventor, actor, and businessman. He was the youngest of eight children[5 born to a German father, Adam Singer (né Reisinger)(1772–1855), and his American wife, Ruth (née Benson) Singer. At twelve, he ran away from home to join a traveling stage act, called the Rochester Players, after finding bits of work as a joiner and lathe operator.

In 1839, Singer obtained his first patent, for a machine to drill rock, selling it for $2,000 (or over $150,000 in 2024 dollars) to the I & M Canal Building Company. With this financial success, he opted to return to his career as an actor. He went on tour, forming a troupe known as the "Merritt Players", appearing onstage under the name "Isaac Merritt",The tour lasted about five years.

Many others, including Walter Hunt and Elias Howe, had patented sewing machines before Singer, but his success was based on the practicality of his machine, the ease with which it could be adapted to home use and its availability on an installments payment basis.

Singer made important improvements in the design of the sewing machine and was the founder of what became one of the first American multi-national businesses, the Singer Sewing Machine Company.

Even as early as 1880, Singer machines compared favorably with their nearest competitors: information articles becoming marketing tool. By the 1900s, this factory, controlled by the parent company, made 1.5 million machines sold around the world,[1] helping the Singer company in becoming one of the first American-based multinational corporations, with agencies in Paris and Rio de Janeiro.

Happy Sunday, kittykatt and all who will follow!
It's a pity that the Singer machines, which used to be really good quality, are now made in China and are sub-standard :-(

DH and the kids just left, about two hours later than the original plan, but that's OK, it's not like they would miss a plane or something! :-) I helped with the packing, but outside of DH's, DBD's and DS-still-13's prescription medication, there's nothing that they couldn't replace if need be.
I'm still left with a basket of apples that need to be juiced (did one basket yesterday), and a house that needs serious attention, and the same goes for the garden. Also, the House&Holidays plan starts next Sunday, and wouldn't it be lovely to get a headstart on that? But I also need to be realistic as to what can be crammed in a single afternoon!

TaDas
- morning routine
- help kids pack
- pack DBD and "general stuff"
- ready road snacks
- see them off
- load of pool towels running

ToDos
- 60 on spiffying up the house and other indoor tasks
- 60 on House&Holidays - office
- juice remaining apples

I will take a break after each task, but away from computer to avoid getting sucked into the rabbit hole of the internet!

Have a good morning at church, Kitty!
Enjoy your day with out dh and kids, trissie. When do you leave for Paris?

Well, I had a perfectly fine Saturday yesterday -- nothing on the calendar. And I spent the afternoon and evening mainly working on the jigsaw puzzle. *sheesh* Once I started, I just couldn't stop. It's 750 pieces, so not huge -- but the colors are all similar, the border is not a straight line, and some of the piece shapes are odd -- which frankly makes it more interesting. I thought I could finish it yesterday - but I was wrong. I'm almost done, though.

I did walk with dd29 and Fable. I thought Fable did very well dealing with stimuli, though she was pulling on the leash a lot dd29 said. She still doesn't walk on a leash super well without extra stimuli. She wasn't overly excited by the small flock of geese that had commandeered the path at one point. She wasn't overly excited by all the people, either.

This morning, I'm up at a decent hour but I didn't get enough sleep. My weight is up even more -- although, I did stay in WW points yesterday. My feet look a little swollen so I think I'm retaining H2O? I need to visit my mom today and see if I can get in a jog; high today is 80*F, so I have more flexibility in terms of time to jog.

Next:
- back exercises
- s2s and self care
- squeegee and wipe down the shower
- make the bed

Later:
- make the bed
- reclaim the kitchen
- gather stuff to visit Mom

- visit Mom (will be lunch time but I'll sit with her)
- home; my lunch
- JOG

- fridge - one more shelf
- payroll: gradelink - week 2
- start knitting project
- can I just finish the puzzle and get it out of my head?
- read a bit
- dinner for 5-6 people? - rot. chicken, GF baguettes, Dutch cheese, frozen pizza, watermelon
- after dinner clean up
- duo
- update health apps

Good morning/ good afternoon, Trissie, Helia and L.Ann!

Trissie, my grandma had a Singer sewing machine, with a footplate that you had to rock (?) as well as a handle to turn. She used it for many years to make clothes (including coats!) for her growing family, and, of course, mending and alterations, especially during the war years. I can remember her making dresses for me when I was a little girl.

Helia , that jigsaw puzzle sounds fascinating! I can understand the urge to do "just a little bit more"!

Enjoy your walk with your friend, L.Ann!

Sitting down after lunch. The menu today was baked ham, roast potatoes, gravy, tenderstem broccoli, carrots and green beans, followed by lemon meringue crunch and cream. So it's no wonder I need to sit quietly and digest for a while before going out in the garden!

I didn't go to see DF E today after church, as she isn't feeling well. :( But, instead, I was able to catch up with a few other people. When I got home I had a chat with Dnextdoorneighbour C, who told me she is having someone round tomorrow to look at the verge on her house and garage. This job has also been on my list for the best part of a year  so I asked her if they could call round d and have a look at mine as well. Her appointment time is "between 12 and 5pm", so I need to tidy up all the "stuff" on the hard standing, clear the steps and make sure the garden is looking its best today! It's another hot day, so I'll wait until it's cooled down a bit. In the meantime I've been doing my "homework" regarding this company, finding out all I can about them, reading and checking reviews, checking accreditations etc. So far, it's all positive. :D

Very quiet here today!

I wonder whether the foot operated sewing machine my grandma has is a singer or something else, kittykatt! I did actually at one time know how to operate it, but I really do prefer the comfort of modern electronic machines :-)
L.Ann, yeah, I don't feel the holiday spirit either, but it will be good to give the less-noticed areas in the house (where the H&H plan starts) some attention!
helia, I'm leaving on Wednesday. I so get it about the jigsaw puzzles - once you start, you just can't put it away!

TaDas
- juice remaining apples
- bottle apple juice
- bottles loaded to electric canner which is now doing its thing
- arranged for cat sitting and dropped off keys
- watered veggie garden
- afternoon routine
- 60 on spiffying up the house and other indoor tasks
- 60 on House&Holidays - office
- pool towels flipped to dryer

Hello, all. We have a beautiful day here. It rained through the night and morning, and now it's cooler and less humid. Yay summer!

Thank you for starting us off, Kittykatt. What an interesting life the founder of Singer had!
WTG on sourcing help for a longstanding issue, and on all of those happy faces in your To Do list.

trissie, I love the name DS-still-13. Has he reached the "I'm not a child!" stage yet?
WTG on juicing those apples.

Fun with a jigsaw puzzle is the kind of relaxation that we don't make enough time for, helia. I'm glad that you got to enjoy yours.

Hi, L.Ann. It looks like you are having a nice Sunday too.
