Bama, nurse here. Lactose intolerance is not an allergy. As we age, our bodies often diminish the amount of lactase we produce, which is the enzyme needed to digest dairy. So of course this is something that can come on gradually, or seem sudden. Milk, of course, is a high lactose product. There are many cheeses that have reduced lactose simply by the way they are made. Cheddar, Swiss, parmesan, colby come to mind as some of them. There are others, they include the harder, aged, cheeses. Softer cheeses, like cream cheese, Velveeta are higher in lactose. Whipping cream and butter with high fat content are low in lactose. It can be confusing, because it depends on volume of consumption, and type of cheese. But thery are all dairy! Even depends on, are you eating something else with it so the digestive system doesn't get bombarded all at once with just milk/ lactose. All mammals, including humans, yes biologically we are mammals, begin life able to digest milk (their mother's) with rare exceptions, and they lose lactase over time. Each species has different make up of mother's milk. Of ancestry note - persons with Norther European, especially Scandinavian, ancestry generally keep the ability to handle lactose longer. Those with a Southern European heritage become lactose intolerant earlier in life. Continuing to drink some milk seems to let the body know that it needs to continue to make at least some lactase. So it can be confusing as to why today someone has a glass of milk and is was fine, but yesterday, or tomorrow, it might be a problem.
Clear as mud? Or at least as a dollop of whipped cream?

Gonna get on my soapbox here, but then I am mom to an ADHD (and not the self-diagnosed type) boy and I've done tons of research thereDoggedly wrote: Mon Aug 25, 2025 1:38 pm We have those allergy wannabes here too, but I had no idea that they were pretending to be allergic to penicillin to make themselves feel special. 30 years ago, everybody was suddenly lactose intolerant, as that was in fashion, now it's gluten intolerant and self-diagnosed ADHD. Waitstaff have endless stories about customers who claim to have celiac but when they are told the dish that they want has gluten in it, they can suddenly tolerate it. It seems a lot worse to mislead doctors just to make themselves feel special. That, of course, is different from having been told that you are allergic but not knowing what the symptoms are, which you were upfront about. That is not an attempt to mislead, but just not having the full information.
There's a lot of "self diagnosed ADHD" folks running in my social circles. Many of them arrived to the conclusion after having kids who have (confirmed) AD(H)D symptoms. It's far more widely recognized now, and when your kids gets "labeled" for exactly the same thing you did when you were a child, and you know AD(H)D has something like 70% inheritability, it does make you wonder. And, well, people with these traits, they kinda gravitate together (because they just "get" the struggles of their friends and are not put off by them), so... basically most of my DH's friends are neurodivergent, and they have neurodivergent kids, and the only question is "how bad is it"
As for the adults, the people we are friends with, they don't use the self-diagnosis as an excuse. If anything, it's an absolution - they finally understand that the reason they fail and/or have problems is not that they don't try enough, but they are not trying "the right way" or "in the right place". Like, you know, no matter how hard you try to milk a goose, it's not gonna work, and not because you are not trying enough or using the proper milking techniques, but because geese give eggs, not milk! But if you really need milk, you can trade the goose's eggs for it, and that's how it goes with being neurodivergent - you need to find the right way, not "the normal people's way".
And now I am getting off the soap box, it's just that I've seen how even the self diagnosis helps my friends have a better life!

Love the conversation! I’ll come back and read it tonight again so it will sink in. I do think the high amount of pepper and spices had something to do with dd, her food would be black with pepper. I don’t know how she got it down her throat without choking tbh.
Potted some new plants, watered all porch plants.
Gotta cook, dh will be home any minute, and I’ll work on the kitchen as I go.

Re: Maumbury Rings Monday
I thought that I would cook myself a quick meal of sausage, green beans and rice. Got the sausage cooked through, the green beans half warmed up, and that is when I realized that I ate the last of the rice this morning. I would be a better cook if I only had a brain. Now we are waiting for the rice to cook.
That is interesting, to tell the difference between an intolerance and an allergy, trissie.
I think Germane is 17 now, Bama. She has reached that venerable age where we are just trying to keep her comfortable.
I think that the stubbornness means that you are sending confident daughters into the world.

Re: Maumbury Rings Monday
I missed that we are on Page 4.
Gma, that was very interesting. Can you tell me where ice cream fits into this? I've been managing an irritated colons since the 1970s, and that is the dairy product that my guts really, really don't like. My life improved 1000% when Immodium was invented.
I love the smell of black pepper, Bama, though I apply it with a lighter hand.
trissie, I have no issue with people finding ways to navigate their lives. I'm thinking of the people who decide that they have an illness and it should inconvenience everyone except themselves. I have a friend who has a serious reaction to gluten. She doesn't go to pot lucks and demand that everybody else research what has gluten in it and bring something else. She brings food that she will eat and eats only from safe sources. E.g. she won't eat what her daughter cooks because her daughter has tried to fool her in the past, but she will eat the gluten free baked good that I bought from the gluten-free bakery that I cleared with her ahead of time. Contrast that to the pot luck where I was told to bring something extra for the gluten-free guy. I wanted so badly to ask "He's an adult, isn't he? So why is it the job of everybody except him to research his health problem, instead of listing the ingredients in what we brought so he can decide for himself if it contains gluten?" Likewise, peanut allergies. I worked with a guy who had a potentially fatal allergy to peanuts and fish. I planned lunches that didn't include either. I once slipped up and brought fish, and only remembered after I had heated it in the microwave. I cleaned out the mw and then went and warned him what I had done. We still sent him to the hospital in an ambulance twice in the time that I worked with him. Then in another call centre, there was the guy who lied about having a peanut allergy so the entire call centre was not allowed to eat anything with peanuts in it. It turns out that his child had a peanut allergy, and he just thought that it would be better if nobody anywhere was allowed to eat them. It came out when a coworker got suspicious and started keeping non-peanut candies next to peanuts in his drawer and then offering them around. When the guy didn't react, he outed him. Now if that coworker had gone to work in the other call centre with me, he would have taken that experience with him and can you imagine the effect on the guy who had the real allergy?

WTG on all that you got done, L.Ann.
Monday
Cleaned up after Germane
Treat and Benedryl for Germane
Mini grooming sessions with Germane, followed by treats
Fresh water and kibble for Germane
Started to CUOP
Found an extra half hour in my day: the appointment is at 3:00 pm, not 2:30. Checked other applications: they all agree
Made breakfast (rice and frozen veg)
Scrubbed out sink and basin
Ran out of Vim. Pour water in the bottle and carried on.
Washed the dishes. I have actually reached the point where washing dishes is easy.
Put the rice pot in to soak
Washed the rice pot
Put plate in to soak
Spiffed self
Quick-marched to animal hospital
Successful appointment: renewed Apoquel, checked her vision and eye infection, and our impressive vet was able to get an oral vaccine into her mouth while she was muzzled, checked her weak legs
Leisurely walk home
Tried to make lunch
Put on a pot of rice
Washed more dishes
Brushed down old dog bed.
Wrapped it and labelled it for basement lockers
Emptied the dw
Filled dw from the shelf of dishes to rewash

Re: Maumbury Rings Monday
Wtg, everyone!
Gma, is dd doing any damage by eating dairy anyway? I never realized how much dairy is in my menus until she became intolerant and I had to look for alternatives to serve. Some of the lactose free products are pretty good.
Trissie, science is amazing as it helps us all understand and treat our bodies better.
Doggedly, I remember Germane from when I used to post before but didn’t realize she was already 17. You take really good care of her.
I cooked, we ate and watched a movie, “Day and Knight”. Dh has gone to bed. Now I need to finish up my work day.
Do:
Put away leftovers
Load and run dw
Wipe down kitchen
