I'll just add:
United Kingdom is the legal entity that is recognized internationally, so we would make trade deals with the UK, for instance.
Great Britain is the island that comprises England, Scotland and Wales. It does not include Norther Ireland, which is part of the UK.
England is a country on that island.
WTG on the dusting. I made it out of my chair, and somehow ended up back in it, LOL.

Re: Tarka the Otter Statue Thursday
Doggedly, I agree, Detroit is not a destination to celebrate a milestone wedding anniversary. LOL! Unbeknownst to some, Detroit actually has some nice parts! I feel like it's problems (yes, very real) have been so widely publicized that they have overshadowed the good parts (DIA - famous art museum, good museum of African American history, Broadway shows are always playing, a river walk, motown, jazz festivals, famous restaurants, superb Middle Eastern food, architecture) as well as the fact that it is slowly coming back. But for us, it's mostly convenient -- we'll be there anyway as dh will run the half marathon. We stay in a super nice hotel that's right on the race course and will eat in its very nice restaurant at least once.
I saw a/ the tragedy yesterday, Bama. I've never done the Bible in a year! I study more deeply so I might do a couple of books of the Bible in a year, depending on the length. Our CG1 took 2 years to study the single book of John LOL!
I address cards to family in England with UK as the official name.

That makes perfect sense, helia. Detroit was a booming town for so long, it would be surprising if they hadn't built some lovely institutions/beauty spots/etc. in that time. And I think that you and your dh are so well-travelled, that you probably don't fantasize about going to the stereotypical travel spots.

Re: Tarka the Otter Statue Thursday
Thanks, I’ll refer to the country as England then and the whole island as the United Kingdom or Great Britain, does that sound right?
I believe every city has areas worthy of tourists. Detroit has a lot of history. It does help to know where not to go in some. I love our own museums and cultural centers but who would know we have them in our little towns if they didn’t actually come see or by word of mouth. We all have things we aren’t proud of as well, crime doesn’t stay in one area, would be nice if we could isolate it and then just stay away. I do like to read the fb “what’s happening in (name of city)” to get news/crime that doesn’t get reported by the media. I know there’s a lot to report on so I wonder how they pick and choose.
Ok sorry I’m so chatty today. An elderly woman that lives in my community called me last night and we chatted almost an hour without being aware of the time and I guess I’m still in a deep thoughts kind of mood. She’s very sweet, came along at the right time and sort of adopted me. Quite a blessing for me and for her. She’s 84, 3 grown sons and lots of grands that all have their own lives going on so I’ve visited and brought her lunch or an auction item before and she keeps auction items for me that are closer to her as an excuse for me to come visit lol. I ordered a homemade cake from a local restaurant to pick up this weekend and it happens to be one of her faves so I’m taking her some whatever day it doesn’t rain. Another excuse for company for us both. And so I don’t eat the whole cake!

Re: Tarka the Otter Statue Thursday
Bama, never feel badly about wanting to chat. I enjoy it, and I'm sure that others enjoy it even if they don't have time to reply.
Talking about safe/not safe areas. I live in the capital city, which is not a high-crime city. It's a city of civil servants. But more violence has crept in, as it has everywhere. When I chose my apartment, my df insisted that we go over the crime maps, as there were beautiful and formerly safe areas that had become disputed gang territory. But even here, it creeps in. Yesterday a woman in her 70's was stabbed in the grocery store in the centre across the street from me. This is the only grocery store that I can walk to when my car breaks down. The police weren't releasing any details other than that they had captured the assailant. So that was worrying. There are a lot of elderly people in my area, so if we look like an easy target, it will make life very different here. Today the police announced that the assailant was a man in his 70's, so I'm thinking domestic dispute and I feel a lot safer, though sad for the lady if she has been living with that.
I left Germane in the apartment when I left to start the laundry, after giving her the choice. I had to go off-floor, and came back to her howling her rage at being left behind. Dogs!
That is some sad work that I'm sure that you are happy to have completed, L.Ann. WTG!
