Fingle Bridge Friday

Fingle Bridge is a 17th-century stone arch bridge carrying an unclassified road over the River Teign near Drewsteignton, within Dartmoor National Park in Devon, England. This packhorse bridge has three arches and the two central piers are surrounded by triangular cutwaters extending upwards to form pedestrian refuges, and is a Grade II* listed building.
Fingle Bridge takes its name from Fingle Brook, a minor tributary which flows into the Teign adjacent to the bridge. Fingle is derived from the old English "fang", meaning to catch, a reference to the suitability of the stretch of river for fishing. The arches of the bridge were repaired, it is believed by English Heritage, during the 19th century.
The bridge sits in the base of the deep Teign Gorge, between the ancient hillforts of Prestonbury Castle 130 metres (430 ft) above the river to the north and Cranbrook Castle 230 metres (750 ft)above to the south, and the bridge is built on the historic crossing point between the two. In its early years the bridge was an important crossing over the Teign used by packhorses transporting corn and wood products across the gorge, although the track up to Cranbrook Castle is now an unmaintained byway so the bridge now leads only to a car park on the south side of the river for roadgoing vehicles, the bridge's function having been replaced by the larger and more accessible Dogmarsh Bridge further upstream on the A382 road.
In 1897 Jesse Ashplant founded the Fingle Bridge Tea Shelter on the north landing of the bridge, serving refreshments to the fishermen, tourists and grain carriers of the day. This developed into the Anglers' Rest pub and was later renamed as the Fingle Bridge Inn.

Longer answer,
the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (to give its full name) refers to the political union between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The UK is a sovereign state, but the nations that make it up are also countries in their own right.
The Channel Islands and Isle of Man are not part of the UK, but are Crown Dependencies.
Great Britain is the official collective name of of England, Scotland and Wales and their associated islands. It does not include Northern Ireland and therefore should never be used interchangeably with ‘UK’ – something you see all too often.
British Isles is purely a geographical term – it refers to the islands of Great Britain and Ireland – including the Republic of Ireland – and the 5000 or so smaller islands scattered around our coasts. This term only refers to geography, not nationality, and while the Republic of Ireland is part of the British Isles, its people are not British – a very important distinction.
So, where am I from? Well, I think of myself first of all as English, (as opposed to Welsh or Scottish!) with a secondary "identity" as British, but also I'm from the UK.
Additional note to complicate things further: Traditionally, Scottish and Welsh people have had a very strong sense of their identity, English people , on the whole (except for some far right extremists) less so. Yesterday 's lunch went well -there were 7 of us - and everyone enjoyed themselves. The early morning was cool and crisp - a sign of autumn - and then we had heavy showers on and off throughout the day - definitely a sign of autumn! I managed a private chat with DF PM after lunch. I think she is slowly coming to terms with the situation, and hopefully will be able to get some form of closure, now what we both suspected for a while has, unfortunately, been proved to be true.
It was after 4 pm when I finally got home, and the cats quite rightly demanded my attention, with lap time (individually! ) for everyone. Then Waitrose delivered, and I cooked pork chops with mashed potatoes and peas for our supper. DH approved.
Today is a "free" day for me. The weather is looking uncertain after heavy rain overnight, but it's dry ATM. I would like to get out in my garden on if possible, but if not, there's plenty to do inside.

Good morning everyone 
Actually at home this morning. Dh wanted to go to town and buy a new basic phone to replace the one which died in the night. Dgs wanted to stay at home and refused to come with us, so I stayed home too. He is autistic adhd and can't be left even though age 13. He is refusing to go to buy new school shoes even though his big toes are right at the end of his old ones. A was to buy these but hasn't. I am stressed out by this, dh's feet are deformed from having to wear small tight shoes as a child. I know he can wear his old shoes to school and buy them later. A is taking dgs to his dmom's on Sunday until Wednesday, dgs school starts on Thursday.
I am English and took 3 hundred years to move 5 miles - as Jonny Vegas said and he comes from our town too. Scots from Glasgow and down the country via glass bottling factories. And Northern Ireland (known too as Ulster) to Liverpool docks then our town was the first industrial town they came to and they settled here. We must have had at least one ancestor who fought at the Battle of the Boyne because my gt grandfather was in the Orange Lodge and the Sash is passed down to the eldest son. Gt granfather's eldest son didn't take didn'it up and so that died out - even though his sons talked angrily about being protestants. No one knew what happened to the Sash. There is a theory my Lavin came from Lavin in Spain but Ancestrydna didn't find any. I must stop now.
I will get some things done now.

I have a brother and sister. My sister lives about 90 minutes to 2 hours away but my brother lives across the country in California so I rarely see him.

I'd forgotten that you have a brother, L Ann. I hope DD32 and Little Bit feel better soon! There's a lot of illness going around here in Michigan.
Vergers, that is interesting about the history of Great Britain! And your own familial history as well. I'm adopted so I don't know genetic history, but my (adopted) mother's grandparents were from Ireland. The other side is from Sweden.
Kitty, there was a young PhD student at our big U who attended our church for a while about a decade or more in the past. She was from the Isle of Guernsey, which I found very fascinating!! She was a lovely young woman, studying a specific Russian musician. She even traveled to Russia to look at original manuscripts of his compositions. I think she spoke some Russian as well. She went home to Guernsey for the major holidays. Enjoy your free day!
Last night, I got confirmation from EP that she's still planning to travel to IL Sep. 19-21. Also, CC got back to me and said my pullover has been backordered and is now expected to ship in early October. Last time they said it was backordered and expected to ship in mid-August. Hmm.....
I forgot to send off the AR Exam for review last night, so I hope to do that asap this morning. Other things I need to do today: visit Mom, pay her PT bill -- won't take long but I keep procrastinating. At 1 pm, I'm having a "craft day" with dd27, J11yo, and 2 puppies at dd27 and dd29's house. I think the 2 puppies together may diminish the amount of crafting happening. LOL! We shall see. I want to make good progress on my knitting, perhaps have dd27 oversee the sewing of the sleeves of the baby sweater I made for ds 32 years ago. Dh and I are going out to eat tonight, keeping it low cal. I'll walk to and from the girls' place and plan to jog a little longer (more than 2 miles - slowly working back up after being sick) tomorrow. Not sure if I'll do the 5K tomorrow morning.
