Re: Surtsey Sunday
Surtsey ("Surtr's island" in Icelandic, Icelandic pronunciation: [ˈsʏr̥(t)sˌeiː] ⓘ) is an uninhabited volcanic island located in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago off the southern coast of Iceland. At 63.303°N 20.605°W Surtsey is the southernmost point of Iceland. It was formed in a volcanic eruption which began 130 metres (430 feet) below sea level, and reached the surface on 14 November 1963. The eruption lasted until 5 June 1967, when the island reached its maximum size of 2.7 km2 (1.0 sq mi). Since then, wave erosion has caused the island to steadily diminish in size: as of 2012, its surface area was 1.3 km2 (0.50 sq mi).[2] The most recent survey (2007) shows the island's maximum elevation at 155 m (509 ft) above sea level.
The new island was named after Surtr, a fire jötunn or giant from Norse mythology.
It was intensively studied by volcanologists during its eruption, and afterwards by botanists and other biologists as life forms gradually colonised the originally barren island. The undersea vents that produced Surtsey are part of the Vestmannaeyjar submarine volcanic system, part of the fissure of the sea floor called the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Vestmannaeyjar also produced the famous eruption of Eldfell on the island of Heimaey in 1973. The eruption that created Surtsey also created a few other small islands along this volcanic chain, such as Jólnir and other, unnamed peaks. Most of these eroded away fairly quickly. It is estimated that Surtsey will remain above sea level until at least the year 2100.
A classic site for the study of biocolonisation from founder populations, Surtsey was declared a nature reserve in 1965, while the eruption was still in progress. Today only a few scientists are permitted to land on Surtsey; the only way anyone else can see it closely is from a small plane. This allows the natural ecological succession for the island to proceed without outside interference. In 2008, UNESCO declared the island a World Heritage Site, in recognition of its great scientific value.

Re: Surtsey Sunday
Happy Sunday everyone!
Helia, I hope you managed a reasonable night's sleep, despite everything.
Dogged, I loved your exposition on class and all its nuances. Especially the part about the middle classes having lots of books and the working classes having lots of TVs.
It's strange how people who want to improve the lot of others are seen as mavericks. If you can get hold of a copy, I would recommend JJ illy Cooper's book "Class". It's very tongue in cheek, and, if course, has dated in the 40+ years since it was written, but it's both hilarious and she gets to the point!
Gma, what a day! I'm not surprised you're exhausted. I hope you can also get a good night's sleep.
LucyLee, thank you for your kind thoughts and good wishes for Helia.
I need to get moving as it's church this m6, so hopefully BBL!

Re: Surtsey Sunday
Thank you for starting us off, Kittykatt. I enjoyed learning about Surtr. In Rick Riordan's Magnus Chase series, Surtr is the baddest of the baddies, so I find it fun to think of his having his own island.
I had a look in my library's web site, Libby (access to multiple libraries online) and Google Play Books, but could not find Class. It's too bad; I think that I would have enjoyed it.
Enjoy church and your wonderful Sunday lunch.
That was a more exciting day than you had in mind, Gma. I hope that tomorrow is more peaceful.
I have not excuse for still being up, so I will tend to my dog and then rectify that.

◕‿◕ * * * Good Morning! * * * ◕‿◕
kittykatt, thanks for the volcanic start. Have a good time at church and with friends.
Doggedly, I hope you're fast asleep now. Very interested reading about middle class trying to engineer marks of distinctions. There's this book (never actually read it entirely) by French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu called "la distinction", about how higher classes manage to make themselves different from lower classes. Like maybe having tennis classes for their kids instead of soccer practice... (more expensive, with specific outfits needed, and so on).
Gma I really hope you are able to find rest after days like this. Wishing you a refreshing Sunday, even if managing your DMom is a good part of your day.
helian (( )) keeping you and your family in my thoughts. I have no real grasp of how it is to grieve before one's relative is actually deceased, but I can only imagine that it must be exhausting to have her still here and yet never really here again.
Waving to all !
Grey Sunday morning. I managed to work on my resume yesterday and started a cover letter, for the job I intend to apply for. I have a feeling they may prefer another person, but it's good practice anyway. And, well, you don't know until you try.
The afternoon will be mostly rainy, I will have to find ways to entertain the boys, preferably not sitting on the couch in front of a screen - DS9 has hadschool friends telling him about a website with free and kid-friendly online games, almost no ads, and the ugliest thing you see is zombies that you can kill, or a few car crashes... so he spends maybe 30 minutes on it daily and more on weekends. And of course DS7 has asked for the same.
I suppose you can't expect them to play lego all day
TADAs
up early, coffee, then tea
some admin stuff online
email sorting and deletion
quick cuop
TODO
eat something, preferably before 10 am (where did the time go)
boil sweet potatoes for a fish and potato parmentier
bake something with hald a dozen underripe apples we were given yesterday ?
and also:
cover letter for job offer, zone work, some cooking ahead, weekly to-dos for next week, some planning for fall school break...

Re: Surtsey Sunday
That sounds like an interesting book too, FrenchFly. I will check the library for it later. I am up temporarily to direct Germane to her pads and supervise her. That seems to have prevented any accidents, and I have given her her treat. Heading back to bed....

Re: Surtsey Sunday
Happy Sunday!
It's raining, which kinda interferes with DH's plan to pick the apples today, but I am sure he will manage
My plans are more of the indoor type, so I won't be affected. By now, it's obvious I should just give up on the garden for the year! I can never get any vegetables. This year, not even the staples like salads or tomatoes. I only have this little veggie patch, but it's in shade (the garden architect did not plan on our neighbours having 8 feet tall wall of thujas right next to it, and I think the roots are actully growing in the patch too. Plus, we have very heavy clay soil, which ain't helping either - for the life of me, I can never get the easiest stuff like radishes get bigger than barbie food! But we have fruit, plenty of it, so there's that.
Dogged, very interesting post yesterday! Yes, being thin and sporty is the new sign of "well off". I was kinda looked down from the lady at Estee Lauder shop when I was buying my perfume on Friday - yes, it's a very expensive one, but just because I have an overweight mumsy look, doesn't mean I am not a top-paid professional who can easily afford it! My problem is kinda genetic - I'm the kind of person who will survive hungry years easily because I can work hard and eat little and still not lose weight. Back when I was a size 8, it meant several fasting days each month, grapefruits for lunches and cottage cheese for dinner and gym 5 times per week. That's not really doable with four kids and a job and the high level of stress that raising special needs kids brings.
And off to bed with you!
kittykatt, it's a pitty we couldn't do Eyjafjallajökull volcano this week! There was a running joke back in 2010 (when its eruption caused airspace closure in most of Europe) that it was the volcano's revenge for people mispronouncing its name!
Frenchie, the one bonus of kids playing online is that they don't make mess when they do! I mean, I always support lego playing and crafting and such, but am not so fond on the clean-up and the constant "but that's my art project and I want it displayed!"
Good luck on the job, you may not get it if you apply, but you are certain to not get it if you don't!
