Re: Woodcock Wednesday @ TDD - C&C
The woodcocks are a group of seven or eight very similar living species of sandpipers in the genus Scolopax. The genus name is Latin for a snipe or woodcock, and until around 1800 was used to refer to a variety of waders. The English name is first recorded in about 1050. According to the Harleian Miscellany, a group of woodcocks is called a "fall".
Woodcocks have stocky bodies, cryptic brown and blackish plumage, and long slender bills. Their eyes are located on the sides of their heads, which gives them 360° vision. Unlike in most birds, the tip of the bill's upper mandible is flexible.
As their common name implies, the woodcocks are woodland birds. They feed at night or in the evenings, searching for invertebrates in soft ground with their long bills. This habit and their unobtrusive plumage makes it difficult to see them when they are resting in the day. Most have distinctive displays known as "roding", usually given at dawn or dusk.
The range of breeding habits of the Eurasian woodcock extends from the west of Ireland eastwards across Europe and Asia preferring mostly boreal forest regions engulfing northern Japan, and also from the northern limits of the tree zone in Norway. Continuing south to the Pyrenees and the northern limits of Spain. Nests have been found in Corsica and there are three isolated Atlantic breeding stations in Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands. In Asia the sites can be seen as far south as Kashmir and the Himalayas.

Thanks for start us off, trissie. I have been batching up the broth from the cottage roll and getting it into the freezer. I'll see you after a good night's rest.

Re: Woodcock Wednesday @ TDD - C&C
Good morning, Trissie, and thank you for the start.
Sleep well, Dogged!
I'm glad you're having a good time at the beach, L.Ann.
You got lots done, Helia! Safe travels for today.
That's a lot for you to have to deal with, Gma. Your DMum is very fortunate to have you to advice for her. I'm sure your garden is going to look beautiful with all those bulbs next spring.
Yesterday afternoon I cleaned the sitting room and also did a little more deep cleaning in there. In the evening when DH was out, I finally typed DF E's article for the parish magazine and emailed it across. (This should have been done at the weekend, but with all the worry over Matilda it had slipped my mind.
But the editor was very understanding and gave me an extension.)
My main achievement so far today is to book my Christmas grocery delivery (9-10 am Christmas Eve).
Today DH goes to the office, I'm visiting C, and I also need to concentrate on the garden (if fine!) and the kitchen. DH is now going to be home on Wednesday evenings, so I need to finish the kitchen at a reasonable time.

Re: Woodcock Wednesday @ TDD - C&C
And so it continues... Matilda's cystitis symptoms have flared up again.
DH has come back home to work, so I can take her to the vet and she has an appointment at 2.15 pm. I have visited C, so that's done. Next, a little in my garden and then see if I can make a start on my kitchen.
Next:
Look up what special diets are available - would the vet agree to M trying one?
Continue with Cat Ease?
Find M's insurance paperwork and put next toy bag ( ask DH not to move these?)
Ultrasound?

Oh no, I'm sorry about Matilda, Kitty. What did the vet say?
I've seen woodcocks in Illinois, trissie.
WTG making homemade broth, Doggedly.
I'm up a little early for me; I went to bed after midnight - did a thorough search of the old photos. Now, I have what I need for a nice slideshow, and I have the slideshow started. I AM NOT prepped for class today, and I do not have a midterm exam for Friday's class. I may have to do that tomorrow and email it to the staff to print out. That's OK too. I am partially packed but not fully. Another must-do thing.
Minimally, I want to be prepped for class, packed, and have the car loaded in 3:05. Is that possible? First -- coffee! I'm working on that now.
I s2sed last night bc I jogged in the afternoon - so I don't need to do that this morning. My hair is OK enough.

Morning all. Poor Matilda. I hope the vet can help.
Helian thinking of you. I so wish you didn't have all that on your plate by yourself. Plus expected to plan work yet even if you don't have to teach. What gets done is good.
Gma I am so glad you are proud of your own yard all that work is worth it. Wow your poor mom how the isolation still continues and neglect.
Doggedly that is wonderful you are free to visit on your own choice now.
Lann looks like you are enjoying your time away.
Trissie that must be frustrating they try to cut so many corners and think to get away with it in legal sense.
It's my day off again. Excited for the first ladies group of the season. Except we found out last night that my friend h has to go down to her mom now too. I am praying she makes it there in time. We'll miss her today.
Then I need to get some of the stuff out the garden later. It's October next week. I think there might be a slight frost atm. It's still dark so I can't see it.
I think I'm still kinda at a loss with mom yet. I had her here for a bit last night as dad wanted to go to a meeting. It was too late for her. She's used to eating supper probably 5 or 6. Then quite often in bed after supper. My supper was probably almost 730. Then I got her in the comfy chair for a bit. After 8 I decided to take her home and get her in bed. Dad was back after 9. She has a very hard time getting up her legs are not strong. Have to watch her while she's eating so she swallows properly. And much more. I feel terrible atm their house doesn't feel sanitary cause of all her troubles. Dad is really noticing he probably can't do it all for much longer. And I don't have time to keep the details all done up. I can help little bits here and there. My sister has a very busy demanding job too.
I made myself do something to feel like my house wasn't disgusting last night I doubt mom would have noticed but I do.I don't know what is going on but I can't still get anything completely done. I swept the floors and wiped down all the counters and table. Supper is better cleaned up. I can start with a bit less basic stuff at least. Take ds to school and hopefully get some cleaning done this morning. I also should paint my shelving for the craft room. Lots to do and either I will have a super productive day or not so much.
Priority list
Basic routines
Kitchen Decluttered all the way
Wash bedding and put flannel sheets on bed
Mop
Vacuum

Re: Woodcock Wednesday @ TDD - C&C
Hoping you did indeed rest well, Dogged!
Have DH's retirement plans taken a more detailed shape, kittykatt?
helia, I know you'll be able to "wing it" during the class!
L.Ann, 8-10 people is very manageable. Will the out-of-state daughter fly in?
lauralind, would your dad be open to consider hired help with the house?
Home from payroll. Fall is in full swing now, and I really need iron my fall trench coat, as a blazer/cardigan is no longer enough! It was tanktop weather on Sunday, so it's a big and quick change. All things considered, today was not a bad day at work, and I have zero meetings tomorrow, so hopefully will have uninterrupted time to work on stuf that's been on the back burner lately. But that's tomorrow's problem, today's problems deal with the home front!
TaDas
- morning madness
- day at work
- pick up DBD
ToDos
- morning routine
- deliver yesterday's folded laundry
- 15 in DS14's room
