Last year, the international conference based on the Nobel Prize awards that is held at my local college, the topic was SLEEP. It was noted that our culture seems to reward those who get by on less and less, and that we are generally a sleep deprived world. There were many interesting topics, including the sleep deprivation experienced by those who are homeless and have no place of safety.
Very interesting to me was the speaker who has done research on what is now called "the glymphatic system" newly identified in physiology in about the last 10 years. While we are awake, our brains work very hard and generate waste materials, just like our muscles etc do when working. Unlike muscle and other tissue waste products that are circulated and cleansed throughout the day, the circulation in our brain only happens while we sleep! Not by the blood, but by a lymph-like substance in the cerebral spinal fluid that gathers the metabolites (waste products generated by metabolism) and brings it to the lymphatic system, which the lecturer said acts like the waste-water treatment plant for the body.
That is a tremendous over-simplification, but I hope you can get the picture. Sleep, she said is essential for brain function. I dont' remember if it happens in deep sleep, light sleep or REM (dream) sleep, or all three.

So that's my lesson for everyone today.
Now i am going to check on my hoses, make sure they are turned off, then change back out of my wet and watered work clothes and go to visit mother.
Just got a text from dson, Mother is exhausted, and was just put down for an afternoon nap. I have several errands to do, so I'll get them done befroe going to see her.

Hi, L.ann, tractor parades are interesting history of farming! I'm happy for your family that the service went well .

Hello, everyone!

Trissie, we also had rain and strong winds again (although not nearly as strong as yesterday) so it was a good opportunity for me to work on the house too.

FFB, that's so nice that DS7 wants to help!

I'm glad the tractor parade was fun, L.Ann.

Helia, I'm also trying to prioritise sleep, as, like you, I feel much better when Ive slept well.

Laura, I'm glad you're able to enjoy music group again , now without so much responsibility.

Gma, that's very interesting about how sleeping well helps "clean out" the brain. There's dementia on both sides of my family , so I'm doing my best to help my brain. Apparently good oral hygiene is also very important according to the latest studies I've read. :D

Ho, Peaches!

DH is home, having had a wonderful time, and I had a very successful afternoon around the house. However, when I sat down on the sofa this evening, I noticed a problem.

Last Thursday morning, as I was running out of the house, I asked DH to change the bulb in one of the ceiling lights in the sitting room. Quick and easy one would have thought... but apparently not. When DH took the bulb out he also managed to somehow dislodge the fitting (How?!! I've changed the bulb without incident many times) and couldn't get not to screw back in place. So he said he'd replaced the fitting. Of course I've been busy while he's been away and hadn't noticed anything amiss, but tonight when I sat on the sofa I noticed he hasn't done it properly, and the wires are showing at the top of the fitting.

I can't face trying to get him to redo it. I possibly *could* do it myself, but I'm not sure I can get everything tight enough. So, long story short, as DH goes to the office tomorrow, I now have an electrician coming tomorrow morning to hopefully do the job for me. Thank goodness for WhatsApp -I managed to take a photo when DH went to the kitchen, so the electrician knows what to expect. I just hope it all goes smoothly - he seems to think it will be a quick and simple job. (And one I could do without! But it can't stay as it is, it's driving me nuts every time I look at it, and I'm not sure about the safety implications. I know no one's going to stick their fingers in, but even so...)

However, the sitting room is now finished, so I can tick that room off my list. And the stewed apple is now bagged into portions, labelled and in the freezer. :D

Hi, all. I am back from my db's house. I grabbed a quick snack of sardines, and now I'll head down to bring up the next load and start cleaning out Germane's crate.
