Re: Harriet Tubman Tuesday @ TDD - C&C
Harriet Tubman (born Araminta Ross, c. March 1822 – March 10, 1913) was an American abolitionist and social activist. After escaping slavery, Tubman made some 13 missions to rescue approximately 70 enslaved people, including her family and friends, using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known collectively as the Underground Railroad. During the American Civil War, she served as an armed scout and spy for the Union Army. In her later years, Tubman was an activist in the movement for women's suffrage.
Born into slavery in Dorchester County, Maryland, Tubman was beaten and whipped by enslavers as a child. Early in life, she suffered a traumatic head wound when an irate overseer threw a heavy metal weight, intending to hit another slave, but hit her instead. The injury caused dizziness, pain, and spells of hypersomnia, which occurred throughout her life. After her injury, Tubman began experiencing strange visions and vivid dreams, which she ascribed to premonitions from God. These experiences, combined with her Methodist upbringing, led her to become devoutly religious.
In 1849, Tubman escaped to Philadelphia, only to return to Maryland to rescue her family soon after. Slowly, one group at a time, she brought relatives with her out of the state, and eventually guided dozens of other enslaved people to freedom. Tubman (or "Moses", as she was called) travelled by night and in extreme secrecy, and later said she "never lost a passenger". After the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was passed, she helped guide escapees farther north into British North America (Canada), and helped newly freed people find work. Tubman met John Brown in 1858, and helped him plan and recruit supporters for his 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry.
When the Civil War began, Tubman worked for the Union Army, first as a cook and nurse, and then as an armed scout and spy. For her guidance of the raid at Combahee Ferry, which liberated more than 700 enslaved people, she is widely credited as the first woman to lead an armed military operation in the United States. After the war, she retired to the family home on property she had purchased in 1859 in Auburn, New York, where she cared for her aging parents. She was active in the women's suffrage movement until illness overtook her and was admitted to a home for elderly African Americans, which she had helped establish years earlier. Tubman is commonly viewed as an icon of courage and freedom.

Re: Harriet Tubman Tuesday @ TDD - C&C
Good morning, Trissie ,and thank you for starting us off.
Bama, that's a lot of cats! Thank you for looking after the homeless ones.
(((Gma))) You have been such blessing to your DMum. I'm glad you and your siblings and the hospice nurses are able to make her last days peaceful and happy for her.
Up and at 'em early as I need to take Fred to the vet for his arthritis injection. When Ive recovered from that, I'm hoping for some time iny garden before I tackle the housework downstairs.

Re: Harriet Tubman Tuesday @ TDD - C&C
Back from the vets. We had a good chat about Fred's test results and his physical exam back in September. (This was the first time "his" bet had seen them, but I'd already had a chat with other vets on the day, so there were no surprises, and everything looks good.
) We will draw a veil over Freddie's behaviour today, all I will say is that it wasn't all his fault. Someone brought a DOG into the CAT waiting area
(cordoned off with barriers announcing it's for cats and with pictures of cats in case people don't read English - we have a large international community mostly due to the university, and although many speak excellent English, not all do. And, in any case , the dog owners today definitely spoke English as a first language. Sigh!))
Just finishing.my breakfast, then I'll go out in my garden.

Re: Harriet Tubman Tuesday @ TDD - C&C
Thinking of you and your mom Gma. ((HUGS)) So glad she's at home and peaceful.
Bama, it could be my shoes and running, for sure!
Is it raining where you are, L Ann? Wondering if you got to walk outside for your first walk. I won't bother with the oral prescription anti-fungal med -- is that what you were talking about? I took that once. It worked -- and then the fungus just came back, but I've heard it can damage your liver.
I always love hearing about Harriet Tubman, trissie! Of course - I learned something new from your post. I did not realize that she led a military operation!
So interesting your vet has separate waiting areas for cats and dogs, Kitty. Makes a lot of sense. Yes - how could someone not see the pictures and words? LOL!
Today, I'll be out and about a bit: 9:30 - 10:30-ish this morning is the KS2J get together at K's house. Then, I'll head to the school - drop off and pick up books. Eventually, I'll go to the grocery store and somewhere for a nice walk. 1-3 pm, I have Prof Dev meetings online. I also have some phone calls to make, and I'd like to make progress washing my mom's stuff, so we can start getting it out of the house. It's probably not dirty, but it just feels right. Also, I still need to tidy my stuff on the cedar chest. Dh has been very patient; he's probably a neater person than I am.
Dinner tonight: fresh g-f ravioli, homemade tomato sauce, and green salad. --I also need to finish setting up my new Google classroom, set up the Telegram group for my class - and getting the syllabus together wouldn't be bad either.
This is likely too ambitious for one day.

Re: Harriet Tubman Tuesday @ TDD - C&C
Trissie, thanks for the start. I didn’t realize Tubman spied for the union, though I may have heard it at some time and forgotten, we studied her briefly in my book club. Interesting that a brain injury gave her visions, if she was alive now I wonder if she would have undergone tests and treatments, possibly ridding her of visions and her good works. She was a brave woman.
Kittykatt, Freddie is most definitely not at fault for anything caused by a mortal enemy in fur that barks and creates havoc on Freddie’s own turf. The nerve of that dog and owner.
Funny thing about the cats is we always have 13, no more, no less. We lost 3 over the past couple of years and gained 3. And it’s not planned or a goal we try to achieve. It just happens. Al of my pets are rescues except for Beau. I’ve always had a weakness for German shepherds, I had a white one as a child, a local person had bred their dogs and had one white one left. I truly believe he was a gift. Our last 3 dogs were all rescues, Thumper who is still with us we got from the same person with the cats and I knew he wouldn’t survive there, the other from a neighbor dog catcher who brought dogs home instead of taking to the shelter if he thought he could breed for money. And a shepherd mix that showed up at the door one morning, now passed from old age. I’m about done with pets but they keep finding me lol.
Thinking of (gma).
Helia, have you been fitted for running shoes at a specialty shoe store? That’s about all I know on running. Both girls ran in school but have given that up now. The most we ever did was a 5k. Their coach was awesome and would get Brooks that were recommended for his running type. Hope you get it resolved. Is it painful?
Dd1 ate with us and visited for a long time yesterday, then went to moms for the night. I love having her home and I also love that she can leave but still be nearby lol. Hope that makes sense. Today we may go shopping just to get out of the house.
Done:
Bible
Feed inside pets
Water
Dust
Make sausage cheese balls
♥ Wake each day expecting good things to happen! ♥

Re: Harriet Tubman Tuesday @ TDD - C&C
Morning all. Gma I am so sorry. But I am so glad she is peaceful and at home. Such a hard time.
Bama that sounds a bit like our cat story. We have Stella and Luna. There have been several others over time. Buttons passed and Zipper was still here when we got them. Then Buttons passed . It wasn't very long between when there was a grey cat putside. Feral but she ended up getting called mama smoke. She had kittens under the house in the heat of the smokey fire summer. One by one she must have abandoned them. One day... Canada day my big ole samoyed Casper was barking at the bottom of the stairs and there was tiny little 6 week ish lucky. Dh became cat whisperer lol. Brought her in and tamed her. Next week cole appeared. Poor little thing would have died in a couple hours I think but for sringing water into her mouth and gradually teaching her to eat. Two more appeared. Ash we ended up catching and taming and she found a home. Then mama decided to move and wandered off with smokey. They were gone for a couple months and then appeared again. We had help to catch them. Took them both to spay clinic. We let mama smoke loose again cause she was much too feral. Smokey was extremely skittish and took work.
Needless to say. Stella siamese off white and taupe Grey. Luna pretty long haired Grey. Mama smoke and lucky and smokey all Grey. And cole is the black. Very monochromatic cat family. Oh and white Sammy loves them all. Finding lucky or cole sleeping in his fur outside is a common occurrence.
We made it through the gathering last night. What made it all worth it was the smiles of mom and dad watching lil j crawling all over. His big bright eyes and smiles are so sweet. Yup. 8 months next week. Crawling. Pulling to stand. Needs to get a bit stronger for those little legs to walk but running by Christmas time? He's a year in February.
Work again today. Holidays mess with my week... Tuesday truck again. Meaning Thursday will be me finishing again . Some restructuring is in the works. Needed for a while and I think it can work. We've split up the 2 friends who can't seem to work together without too much chatter and not enough productive time. Sending one to the back store. To help with the service desk. The rest of us will deal with seasonal with me as director and a new girl starts today whom we hope can learn team lead. She was in that in her other job too. Different background and I think she will be more motivated. I hope.
Anyways my novel again. Busy morning. In an hour is school run. Drop dh truck at the shop and me at work. So dh can keep the car. I need to do some routines and such before work.
