Cecile Pearl Witherington Cornioley, CBE (24 June 1914 – 24 February 2008), code names Marie and Pauline, was an agent in France for the United Kingdom's clandestine Special Operations Executive (SOE) during the Second World War. The purpose of SOE was to conduct espionage, sabotage, and reconnaissance in occupied Europe against the Axis powers. SOE agents allied themselves with French Resistance groups and supplied them with weapons and equipment parachuted in from England.

Witherington was born in Paris to British parents. She parachuted into France in September 1943 as a courier for the SOE Stationer Network and, in May 1944, became head of the SOE Wrestler Network in the Indre region in central France. She was the only woman to lead an SOE network and associated resistance groups, called maquis, in France.

Witherington's network, comprising about 2,000 maquisard fighters after the invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944, was especially efficient in sabotaging railroads and telephone lines. The official historian of the SOE, M.R.D. Foot, characterized the Wrestler network as "highly successful"  and Witherington herself as "incomparable." She was a recipient of the Order of the British Empire from the United Kingdom and the Legion of Honor and Croix de Guerre from France.

Thanks for the interesting people this week, trissie. A few years ago there was a movie about Harriet Tubman, very interesting, especially how her faith guided her.
Mom is still with us, sort of stable, but deteriorating. Hospice nurse says days, maybe week? We have had her home for a week now. When she went to hospital by ambulance a week ago, I had no idea she would be able to survive a week. We were hoping for a day!
She's one strong, determined lady, who raised a wonderful family. We are all working well together, taking turns sleeping. Neighbors, friends, bringing food, visiting. All because she is so loved by so many! Tonight is my night to be up with her.

Trissie, interesting woman, and to think she lived in my lifetime. I have found a lot of people that made history were still alive after I was born and I didn’t appreciate them at the time. I also realized why I wouldn’t make a good spy, aside from being too afraid of getting caught, I’d never remember to answer to a code name.

Doggedly, we watched an episode of Hudson and Rex and enjoyed it, except the part where Hudson left Rex locked in a train car and a police officer had to let him out. Red would never do that lol.

Harriet, thank you for taking care of the little cat. Her life was definitely enhanced by your kindness.

Yesterday I did my basic chores before running errands with dd. We went to home goods and I found some cute stuff, the grocery store so I can cook for her and her sister (she informed me dd2 is surviving on lunchables and sodas). Since I didn’t get to cook we all went out to eat when dh got home. Enjoyed some catching up. I remembered my book club meeting, the only reason I joined this season was the author is a Supreme Court justice, the leader of the book club only picks books if the author agrees to an interview, so I went to my room and enjoyed that as much as one can when knowing nothing about law, the judicial system, etc lol. Fell asleep early so now I’m wide awake since 2am.

Helian, yes, our vet also has a dog waiting area,. labelled DOG waiting area, and with a picture of a dog to ensure people understand . One of the receptionists, who has a heart of gold but a no nonsense attitude, informs people if theyve gone to the wrong area and requests thet move to the correct area. Such is her presence, people instantly comply! But she wasn't working yesterday, and I didn't like to say anything, especially as the dog owners appeared worried about their little dog (she needed urgent surgery for a cruciate ligament), so they just got sworn at by Freddie.

I'm glad you were able to have a good phone visit with your DBro, Dogged.

Yesterday I cleaned the sitting rooms and also cleaned and finally rehung the pictures on the staircase. But then there was a crash and the sound of broken glass -the wire holding the picture at the top of the stairs had snapped and it fell down the stairs taking all the others with it. So there was then glass to clear up, black marks to scrub off the wall, and, if course, Matilda was fascinated by it all and had to be locked away until it was safe for her, so she yelled in frustration the whole time. I E rejigged things around a bit. I've ordered a new frame for the picture where the glass smashed, this time with plexiglass, so if it happens again there won't be such a mess. And I've had to order a new roll of masking tape, as despite being asked several times, DH is refusing to tell me where he put the plastic container with all the different types of tape when he reorganised the office, and is also refusing to find it for me. .(Sometimes, life is just to short to nag!)

Today I'm expecting a parcel from royal mail. I'm hoping to do some more to the climbing rose, but I think that's going to have to wait now until the parcel has been delivered, as there's no way I'm going to hear the doorbell from the far end of the garden. However, I can always do something out the front, and even make a start in my kitchen!

Bama, can you get a nap today? That's nice that you're cooking for both your daughters. Does that mean they're staying with you? Or nearby?
Gma, sounds like a special time with your family. I hope your time with your mom today and tonight is good and peaceful.

Today, it looks like we're going to have a rainstorm here pretty soon, but then it should clear up. High of 63F, so not too warm. Dh left early this morning for a work trip to Atlanta - flying, not driving. He has meetings there today. I have class 1:40 - 3:30, and that's all that is on my schedule -- but I do have other things I need to get done, like prepping for class, finishing the syllabus, going for a jog, making dinner reservations for Friday with the Rs, calling the window cleaners, working on my mom's stuff, finishing tidying the MBR cedar chest, etc. Dinner for me will be leftover chicken curry and possibly green beans.

The weather on Sunday, the day of the half marathon, is looking extremely rainy. Dh says he's going to run it anyway.

I am trying to make myself get moving. Basic routines and school run. Before getting going too far I have to call dad. He called me yesterday at the end of work. Can I bring him something from the store today and then when I come out he can go grocery shopping. Ugh.. when I come out? Well I guess I have time... I should want to but every time I lose my whole day over it... I am deciding if I should tell him I don't have bible study today then I can go in the morning. It's going to be a bit nicer this afternoon and I have outside stuff to do. And then I can take some jars home.
