Winifred Spink was a MI6 officer. She was the first female officer sent to Russia, 1916 - 1917, and subsequently assigned to Italy until the end of the First World War.
Winifred 'Winnie' Verena Spink was born 6 December 1885 in Sevenoaks, UK. Her father, Samuel Spink, was from the wealthy family that owned Spink & Son and a member of the Plymouth Brethren. Her Swiss-born mother, Elise (née Höfer) died in 1899 and her father swiftly remarried the family's young nursemaid. He sent Winifred and her four siblings to live in Bromley, away from his second family. Winifred was later sent to a finishing school in Zurich, Switzerland, supervised by her mother's family. She initially studied French at University of Lausanne and then from 1911 - 1913 at the Sorbonne University in France, where she met up with Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst who were there on holiday. Spink returned to the UK in January 1913. She attended several suffragette events and also trained at the Pitman's Secretarial School in English, French and German. From August 1914 she worked as a secretary, as well as studying Economics at the London School of Economics and training as a car mechanic.
In June 1916, aged 31, Spink was recruited to MI6, recommended to its head Mansfield Smith-Cumming by Colonel Walter Bersey for whom she was working. At the time it was known as MI1(c), part of the War Office.[1]: 272 In July she was sent to Petrograd with Sir Samuel and Lady Maud Hoare to be the only woman working at the British intelligence mission. Samuel Hoare was the new head of mission, liaising with the Russian secret service. Spink worked as a clerk on reports and card indexes of travellers between the UK and Russia, also learning Russian and volunteering in the Anglo-Russian Hospital. She kept a diary during her time in Russia. During 1916 she became romantically involved with several men, including Lionel Reid, the Mission's office manager.
In March 1917 Spink was moved to Moscow, and while she was there the February Revolution started in Petrograd, then spread to Moscow. She and Reid, who had become engaged while in Moscow, left by train back to Petrograd on 15 March. She continued to work at the British mission, aware of the difficulty with violence and food shortages in the city but still able to visit the cinema, opera, ballet and dine out with friends. She saw Vladimir Lenin speaking to the public from the balcony of the headquarters of the Bolshevik Party. In June, the British ambassador George Buchanan was replaced by Arthur Henderson and Spink was seconded as his private secretary and attended many meetings that he held where she probably also acted as translator. Suffragettes Emmeline Pankhurst and Jessie Kenney arrived in June..Spink was invited to a reception Pankhurst held. Henderson returned to the UK in July, with Buchanan returning as ambassador and Spink returned to intelligence work. As she and her fiancé returned to the British Intelligence Mission from a concert later that month past crowds listening to public speakers, they narrowly avoided being caught up in a serious attack by soldiers on these crowds. Food was now rationed and she became ill. She returned to the UK in August 1917.
After recovering her health she went to work for Hoare in Rome, where he represented MI5 and MI6. Spink was awarded a medal for her intelligence work in Petrograd and Rome.[1]: 272 She returned to intelligence work briefly in 1939.
She worked as a secretary for Maurice Baring and Hilaire Belloc in the 1920s. In 1926 she married William G. Ramplee-Smith of the Royal Naval Reserve. They had a son together, before Ramplee-Smith died in 1935 while at sea, and Spink returned to work to support herself and their son as private secretary to Lady Hoare until 1939. Spink later moved to San Francisco in the USA. She died in Reading, UK in July 1973 aged 87.

It's over. And it's just beginning.
Mother took her last breath at 10pm. It's now 2 am, I'm home, need a shower, shampoo, and we will all be at church at 10 am, then have a quick lunch and meet with the funeral home at 1. Our pastor is out of town, but his "substitute" was wonderful, and was with us when she took her last breath.
Life will dramatically change for me. My siblings and son have been great teammates in caring for her.

Indeed this will change your life from now on, especially as your life had been organised around her and her needs, for such a long time. I suppose there are many things to do right now and in the days to come, for her and about her. Virtually sending you strength and peace, if you need them. (( ))
Kittykatt, thanks for the start. I'm sure I never heard of Winifred Spink. If we're weather twins, you must have a sad rainy day just like here. I wish you a good time at church and a peaceful Sunday.
Autumn has come. It's gray and rainy, and no hopes of sunlight for the day. But at least we had been warned about it and had enjoyed the day yesterday. Beans were harvested all week, a good quantity of them because of the sweet temperatures. It will slow down from now on. Tomatoes too will slow their growth, and show more signs of mildew. Zucchinis had already stopped. Only the leafy things will grow, and maybe the potato plants stemming from the compost heaps.
It will be a slow indoors day here. I had kept the housechores for today. And I need to prep ahead for the week : kids are supposed to be dropped at two separete places for school break daycare, and MrNG has a week of training an hour away from here, so I will be the one schlepping both boys to and from daycare for the full five days, with 10 hours of being away in between. Not really a break for the kids... Well, that's our life right now, and we are healthy and determined, so it's ok.

So, Sunday again. Skies are clear and it's sunny, but it was below zero (Celsius) overnight. Not enough for my meddlars to ripen, though - I want to give meddlar jelly a try this year. I am working from home tomorrow (I have an online seminar 9am to 3pm, no use sitting in the office with a headset having to fend off people trying to talk to me), so I'll have a mini-long weekend of sorts! Sunday means homework and school preps in this house, but it would also be nice to carve pumpkins, as we won't be home next weekend (fall break for the kids the week after, so we're off to the cottage). I am half thinking of doing a Halloween kid party, though probably only DBD is interested nowadays. I kinda miss my excited preschoolers! 
We made progress in garden yesterday - wooden furniture was cleaned, dried and put in storage for winter, DS mowed the backyard, and I started winter-cleaning the BBQ. That's gonna be a task for the whole week, as the individual parts need to be soaked and scrubbed. Not my favourite job, but I sure do like getting stuff on the BBQ in summer! Also need to plant tulips and other bulbs that I want to grace my garden in the spring.
kittykatt, another interesting female figure! There were so many female spies to choose from this week!
Frenchie, your growing season is longer than ours - my vegetable garden has been fully harvested, well I have some salads in the tiny greenhouse, but that's it. Next week does not sound fun for either the kids or you, but it's just the phase of life! In a couple years, you will have all the free time and teens who will want to hole up in their rooms all holiday long!

It's sprinkling/ lightly raining here in Detroit. I walked with dh to the start line this morning and I've got the app working. Looks like he's just past mile 4. He's running in Windsor, Canada right now! (The route is half in the US and half in Canada.) In about 20 minutes, I'll head out of the hotel and stand on the corner to cheer him on.
Oh - the first runners, probably the marathoners, are running by! I can see them and hear the crowds cheering. The hotel is between miles 8 and 9 and then again around mile 12.5 for the half marathoners. The full marathoners break off before the route loops back here again.
