Re: Fig Jam Friday
Fig jam originated in ancient Mediterranean and Middle Eastern civilizations, dating back to at least 4000 BC when early people preserved figs by cooking them with honey or sugar to extend their harvest season. The Sumerians documented the use of fig cakes in temples on tablets from 2500 BC. The Ancient Egyptians called the fig "Tun" and it was a significant fruit, linked to the goddess Hathor.
The practice of preserving figs spread over millennia, with figs becoming staples in ancient Greece and Rome, where they were even protected by law or considered sacred. Figs were a staple in the Greek diet, and the government once passed laws to prevent the export of the highest-quality figs. The Romans revered figs, linking them to the founding of the city through the myth of Romulus and Remus under a fig tree. Roman senator Cato the Elder famously used fresh figs from Carthage to warn the Senate about the city's proximity, ultimately leading to the Third Punic War.
The introduction of sugar to Europe during the Crusades enabled the development of modern jam and preserve-making techniques, although figs were historically preserved for long journeys in dried form.
During the Middle Ages, all sugar-cooked confections, including candied fruit, were often called "jam" during this period. Dried figs were still a popular and affordable way to transport the fruit for long journeys due to their long shelf life.
Figs spread to other parts of the world through trade and exploration. Spanish missionaries brought the first figs to California in 1520.
Today, fig jam is a popular product in many regions, with many unique recipes and flavours available. For example, the jam is a must-have on a cheeseboard in Corsica. Artisanal fig jams are made with traditional methods, often highlighting the fruit's natural flavour.

Re: Fig Jam Friday
Good morning, everyone, and happy Friday!
I need to get up as soon as my light box session has finished (I don't want to skip that, as the effects are, apparently, cumulative). O ce it's light.I need to go down to the garage and pull out the right box that needs to be sent today (they're all in a crate and each I e is labelled, but the job is still easier in daylight!
)
Dogged, in theory it should be very simple. DH has no meetings today and no tests to witness, the spare room/ office is above the front door and the postman always rings the bell loudly. I have forwarded the email with the time slot for collection to him, so he knows when it should be collected. Also, the postman must be familiar with this procedure, BUT the whole thing depends on DH listening for the door bell! (it's quite loud, so, so long as he doesn't play his music too loudly we should be ok. Also some of the time slot covers lunch time, so he should be in the kitchen then, which is next to the front door.) I'll leave the package on the kitchen table with the sellotape next to it, just in case the label the postman provides doesn't want to stick. I feel I can do no more! Hopefully I won't be gone too long this morning, and will be back before the postman.arrives!Doggedly wrote: Thu Oct 30, 2025 10:38 pm I hope that your DH cooperates in giving the parcel to the postman.

Re: Fig Jam Friday
Happy Friday!
I don't particularly care for fig jam, I consider it a waste of good figs, but I know some people do like it, kittykatt
We've had a lovely time at the cottage. The teenagers talked to us!
We consider that a special benefit of the cottage, since everybody enjoys the warmt of the fireplace in the living room, that's where the entire family gathers and it means more interaction than normally. Also, there's no TV there (intentional), and very limited internet (we could do something about it, but won't).
Been home since Wednesday evening, the girls are off school all week, DS is not, so DH was working from home yesterday while I went to the office, and it's the other way round. Visited my grandma, who celebrated her 92nd birthday yesterday - it's not going to be long now. The family has decided to take her home from the hospital, luckily one of my cousins is a nurse and another is a doctor, so there's enough medical professionals in family to oversee her care. She had a rough night and slept the whole time I was there. But I was told she did remember I visited in the hospital, so there's that. I do feel a bit guilty as apparently she was sharing the yearly family photos I was sending her all the years with other members of the family (there's a very complicated relationship there for a lot of reasons), but there's nothing more I could do about it now. I will try to stop by next week, though.
For the time being, I got work I need to do for payroll (even if I did three hours of unplanned overtime yesterday - with the grandma run and grocery run, I didn't get home till 9pm), and a house that's mildly disastrous and a party to plan for for Sunday. But sure I can do it, right?

Re: Fig Jam Friday
helia, yes, it's a kids' Halloween party on Sunday. As all local schools are closed this week, a lot of people are away, so we've chosen a date when they are likely to be back. How's DS and family, is baby I still in hospital? Any chance of her going home soon? It's heartbreaking to leave hospital without the baby
L.Ann, what is Little Bit's costume?
I don't know what I had been doing, but it's 2pm already!

Re: Fig Jam Friday
trissie, yes, little I is still in the hospital but out of the NICU. I haven't gotten an update since yesterday morning. It sounded like they were going to try having her nurse more yesterday. (She still has a feeding tube.) F mentioned the possibility of a biliblanket, which makes me wonder if there's some jaundice now? If so, that would really upset F further - another hurdle but it' very treatable. Dd30 (now) was a preemie and spent some time wrapped in a glowing blanket. F said they're expecting to keep her in the hospital until around Nov. 5, 2 weeks before her official due date. I hope to get an update this morning.

Re: Fig Jam Friday
helia, jaundice is annoying, but as you say, it's very treatable and with treatment there's no long term effects, other than maybe that jaundiced babies tend to have less energy to nurse - at least that's what we've been told, to wake the baby for regular feedings because there was a risk of baby conserving energy by sleeping more and therefore eating less and entering a vicious circle. November 5th is just around the corner now!
