Fig Jam Friday

I enjoy fresh figs and fig jam, just had some on Monday. Dh’s family and my daunt all had fig trees so we were blessed to get some every year. Now daunts farm has sold and been flattened for a subdivision and dh’s family home was rented and the owners have let it grow up, it’s quite overgrown and woody now. We did drive by and check for figs and pears this year and all the trees have decided not to participate.

Woke with a headache so not doing much right now.

Bama llama! So nice to see you! We have a large fig bush, so I know how the "real thing" should taste. Kids love it too, don't care the least bit about store bought figs.

Happy Halloween, everyone! It is a suitably spooky overcast rainy day here. I don't think that we got anywhere near what was forecast; just lots of normal rain. The people in the rural areas are cheering the raising of the water tables feeding their wells, and I don't see any calls for sandbaggers so all is well.

Kittykatt, I've got my fingers crossed for your parcel.

I don't particularly care for fig jam, I consider it a waste of good figs, but I know some people do like it, kittykatt

I'm like that with potatoes, except that I do like French fries and mashed potatoes and hash browns, etc. It's just that once I have boiled a potato or microwaved it, I already have something perfect so I don't go any further.
I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother's decline.

I hope that Little Bit has good weather for the pumpkin farm, L.Ann.

helia, I think that no news is probably good news where Little I is concerned. Here's hoping that she keeps getting stronger.

Bama, those are happy memories, but sad about the state of the fruit trees now. Where I live, people tend to view fruit trees as a nuisance (mess to clean up in the fall) and cut them down when they move in. My df tried to get pear trees going, but only had room for one in her yard. She explained that you need a female tree and a male tree to pollinate, but couldn't find a neighbour who would agree to allow her to plant the other tree.

Dogged, there are some self-pollinating pear trees, though most do require another. Majority of gardens in our neighborhood (mind you, this is all new construction, well not so new, 2007 is I think when the first house was built) have at least one fruit tree, though probably nobody rivals the variety we've managed to squeeze on our 0.2 acre (840 sqm) plot I love how our garden is a haven for bees of all kinds from very early spring to very late fall! Little Bit’s costume for tonight is a pink witch costume, Trissie. I haven’t seen that one yet. I have seen her princess butterfly costume and her Elsa costume since you need different costumes for different events. The last two came from her dress up bin.

Minor happy note - just saw on our Mr. President's official facebook page a reel of him and first lady participating in planting of trees in the nature reserve around the presidential summer residence. His poor security detail got another proper workout So happy that amidst all the darkness and bleakness (don't wanna think about our prime minister to be) I have a president who makes me proud!

This was long ago, trissie, and 3 houses ago for my df. I have heard of fruit trees that have the other gender grafted on so that they can self-pollinate. The sad truth is that here, when you sell your house the next owner is likely to cut down the fruit trees to save themselves trouble in the fall. Your garden sounds wonderful, and your dchildren are lucky.
I can relate to your feelings about your prime minister. Mostly I feel relief when I see ours.

Outcome was that dog did come to supervise laundry but that canned dog food as reward is no longer acceptable
Found that one of the two washers on my floor has a handwritten note listing its latest crimes
Started one load of two winter jackets
Brought back laundry cart and dog, who is not angry but disappointed in me.

Dogged, our previous president was so past prime both mentally and physically (he even wore adult diapers), so a fit active one is a sight for sore eyes!
I can't imagine somebody cutting down the fruit trees I planted! It probably does happen with sales, though. But it seems to me that people around here - especially the "middle class who can afford a house" do take pleasure in home grown fruit. In any case, a fruit tree requires far less maintenance than home grown vegetables

I am done for the evening. DH is still not home, so I will settle with a book and maybe go to bed early?
