Captain Samuel Wallis (23 April 1728 – 21 January 1795) was a Royal Navy officer and explorer who made the first recorded visit by a European navigator to Tahiti.
Wallis was born at Fenteroon Farm, near Camelford, Cornwall. He served under John Byron. In 1757, he was promoted to captain and was given the command of HMS Dolphin as commander of an expedition accompanied by Philip Carteret on HMS Swallow with an assignment to circumnavigate the globe. As was reported in the press, he was also tasked with discovering the Southern Continent. The two ships were parted by a storm shortly after sailing through the Strait of Magellan. In June 1767, the expedition made the first European landfall on Tahiti, which he named "King George the Third's Island" in honour of the King. Wallis himself was ill and remained in his cabin so lieutenant Tobias Furneaux was the first to set foot, hoisting a pennant and turning a turf, taking possession in the name of His Majesty. He described Tahiti as having a very good climate and the island being 'one of the most healthy as well as delightful spots in the world'.
HMS Dolphin's purser, John Harrison, had the skills necessary to calculate longitude by the Lunar Distance method. This was an early version of the technique, predating the first nautical almanacs which included tables that shortened the calculation process. Consequently, Harrison had lengthy calculations (taking about four hours) to turn each observation into a longitude position. Wallis freely admitted that he did not understand these calculations. Determining the longitude (together with the latitude) of Tahiti meant that the later voyage by James Cook had no difficulty in finding the island. The lunar distance longitude was added to by observation of a solar eclipse which occurred during Dolphin's stay, which provided an additional fix. The two longitudes obtained provided a level of precision greater than could be achieved by previous navigators.
Dolphin stayed in Matavai Bay in Tahiti for over a month. Wallis went on to name or rename five more islands in the Society Islands and six atolls in the Tuamotu Islands, as well as confirming the locations of Rongerik and Rongelap in the Marshall Islands. He renamed the Polynesian island of Uvea as Wallis after himself, before reaching Tinian in the Mariana Islands. He continued to Batavia, where many of the crew died from dysentery, then via the Cape of Good Hope to England, arriving in May 1768.
Following his return in England, Wallis was able to pass on useful information to James Cook, who was due to depart shortly for the Pacific, and some of the crew from the Dolphin sailed with Cook. Although Cook carried an official report of Wallis's circumnavigation, it is not known whether the two met prior to Cook's departure in August 1768.
In 1780, Wallis was appointed an Extra Commissioner of the Navy.

Good morning, Trissie, And thank you for 8is off..I had actually heard of Samuel Wallis before - I think he was mentioned in I. History lessons at school. Fascinating about the calculation of longitude so you knew where you were, and very important, as when at sea there are presumably no markers like "the big oak tree to the left of you"!

Bama, I never answered you question about fireworks. These are fireworks without the bang. So you still get the "whoosh" sound and all the pretty colours, but no bang. I think the big problem is that fireworks have got a LOT louder , to the level that they now traumatise xxx some pets, wildlife and, of course some people with PTSD.
I can hear rain on the roof again, so it looks asmif we'll have another wet day. Maybe this would be a good opportunity to do some more work in the bedroom? If it stops raining I would like a walk, to get some fresh air and what passes for daylight this time of year!

Thank you for another amazing explorer, trissie! I've never heard of Samuel Wallis.
Thank you for the photo of Jude, Kitty. I think I'd seen her before in a photo here. Dh and I have come to the conclusion that we would like to get a cat (or 2) -- but our housemate M is allergic. We don't know how long she is thinking of renting that room. . . We might see if she's OK with a hypoallergenic breed, like a Siberian.
Yesterday: I wasn't super productive in the afternoon; I did get in a short jog and a trip to WF and called the window washer dude - left a message. I made a tasty meal of tuna pasta and green salad. Little I went home from the hospital yesterday, so I also did a lot of communications about that!
Dh and I got the garbage and recycling to the curb.
Today, I need to be more productive.
Exams are technically due on Thursday - but definitely due by Friday. I have a dentist appointment this morning and class this afternoon, with the prep and grading that goes along with that. Dinner will be early bc dh has a meeting at 7 pm. In addition, we're watching Fable for about an hour in the early evening, around dinner time. I will have a couple hours this evening to myself.
I'm up early for me bc I need to be otd in about 45 minutes to the dentist appointment.

Hello, Helia! What wonderful news about little I - DS and F must feel they're a family at last. I think a cat (s) would be great for you and your DH - they're very loving, but, theoretically at any rate, less of a tie than dogs.
DH rang me from work to say his DAuntie had passed away
She was 93 and had lived in her own home until 2-3 weeks ago. His cousin J ( her daughter) is understandably very upset, and I'm sure her brothers are as well, although J was closest to her Mum. No date for the funeral yet, but judging by the timing for two of our church members who recently passed away, it's probably going to be in the next 2- 3 weeks.
However, it's stopped raining, and I've had a nice walk round the estate, and a little time deadheading iny.aoggy garden. Time to tackle the house now and see if I can do a little more work in the bedroom.

House tasks: Replace the bit of mortar that's fallen out of the edge of the roof (I think its called the verge? Can this wait until next year when we get the house painted when a roof ladder will be in place?) I need for it to stop raining before I ask anyone to come and look!

The Christmas gift is a heavy one, Bama and I have a 12 week prohibition on lifting anything over 10 pounds after my surgery.

Trissie I was never put on meds after getting off depakote which was awful I do take supplements and I always used supplements for my boys. We are what is called High Masking. My youngest is more autistic than adhd and has more of the social and motivational issues. Our whole family just claims the Neurodivergent label. We all are. C is a genius, more bipolar with.moods, adhd, ocd with neatness needs and autistic, he has had meltdowns since birth, hyper fixates until an expert on a tipic then switches when bored, had a lot of problems with executive functioning which I have worked with him on and he has a method now that works. N is the mildest of us all because he only got half genes as his father is neurotypical. He was just a genius of sorts reading and talking and doing 300 piece puzzles at 2 and as my first I taught him my coping mechanisms so he is so high masking you only see it in hindsight. Dh was adhd as a child and young adult but has self taught himself executive functioning skills with calendar dependence and routines and is a bit OCD and very routine driven. We are a high routine and check list family. It is our super power. R has more of the social issues than the rest of us and is very rule driven and literal thinking. Structured and routine but hard to motivate.
Me, very literal thinker, don't get jokes or like to be teased, dh's routines fixed alot of me over the last 33 years, tied to my calendar but the procrastination is bad. I am driven by deadlines, I need them. Ryan and I are more messy but learning to be neater thanks to routines and neat people in house and I can afford a cleaning woman.
I take SAM-e for mood swings which really helps. I take high epa fish oil for brain, I take a tumeric brain health for memory. Cameron got a lot of help from phosphytidl serine and grape seed oil as a child. Both of my younger boys used supplement to control adhd as children. But they had to take different ones. C was the only one that took an adhd med Vyvance his sophomore and junior year but that was because of fainting. We used it to raise his blood pressure. He liked the brain results but hated dry mouth so stopped.
L.Ann, good luck on surgery, the dementia doesn't happen with all but often more with Women but I am noticing it with husband too. His short term memory is shot. Mine was more yesterday and before memory and words. I lost so many words. I need to switch to a Mediterranean diet. It is hard with the boys living at home we have a set venue we have issues breaking away from. Hubby is trying to eat plant based for health. But we do vegan "meats" but our main meals are tacos or taco salads, chicken sandwiches or burgers and airfries. Spaghetti, mac and cheese, pot pie, curry or stir fry and rice, lately steak and potatoes with real meat and KFC homemade famousbowls, chili and soups. I need to eat more veggies, grains, fruits to lower cholestrol. I am taking berberine to help lower, it did wonders on blood sugar and a1c.
Trissie, sorry to read about grandmother's passing. I am one of those wierd people who don't classically morne. I now understand that is part of my neurodivergence. Out of sight out of mind. But I don't find death sad for.myself and especially when the person was expected to pass. I am sad from those left behind that are grieving. I just go into problem solving mode and help take care of things. Since your son is on the spectrum have you ever checked your self? They say it runs in families.
KK sorry to hear about death in your family. 93 is a long life and to be independent for so long is wonderful. Is it custom now for more people to be cremated rather than buried? It is here.
Well I cleared out gift closet on Monday and took to my room in 4 laundry baskets to sort and watch a movie but cat came in and jumped on lap for a cuddle and that was all she wrote, we watched 3 episodes of Blood of my Blood and nothing got sorted.
This morning I need to print out some things for.my class this week and maybe stop by school to make more copies. I will also do our bills. Then we will see.

Kittykatt, whose funeral is Thursday? And now an aunt, too.
Hi, cl. That's a lot of neurodivergence to cope with.
It's colder here today than yesterday. Definitely autumn's declining temperatures that lead to winter. I want to go outside for a walk, but I hate the cold. Yesterday was sunny and just a sweatshirt was ok midday.
Today I start with print shop at college, to make adjustments and order printing of bulletins etc for the funeral.
Then wash dishes from cleaning refrigerator at Mom's house. Dsis3 arrives tonight, dbro and dsis2 tomorrow. We have to make picture posters.
I'm looking forward to having things settle down after the funeral. I wonder if they will, because we are getting into the busy holidays. I will be finding things at mother's to wrap for everyone at Christmas. And I'll have to shop by myself for everyone as well. Or make things, which I always enjoy, but that takes time too.
Well, time to get out of my warm bed and face the day.
