Tonkinese is a domestic cat breed produced by crossbreeding between the Siamese and Burmese. Members of the breed are distinguished by a pointed coat pattern in a variety of colours, and their blue eyes.In addition to the modified coat colors of the "mink" pattern, which is a dilution of the point color, the breed is now being shown in the foundation-like Siamese and Burmese colors: pointed with white and solid overall (sepia).

The best known variety is the short-haired Tonkinese, but there is a semi-longhaired (sometimes called Tibetan) which tends to be more popular in Europe, mainly in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France.

The modern Tonkinese breed is a reconstruction of a breed brought to the West in the 19th century. These cats were originally known as 'chocolate Siamese'. Breeders working with imported cats from Malaysia noticed some cats have aquamarine eyes and darker coats than the Siamese. In 1901, the Siamese Cat Club recognised them as a Siamese of the 'chocolate' type.

Many of the cats used to found the Siamese and Burmese in the West are believed to be Tonkinese, including Wong Mau. Tonkinese would be bred still but registered as either Burmese or Siamese, it was not until the 1950s that breeders would take interest in the cat. These breeders worked together on developing breeding lines with these cats and by 1965 the Tonkinese was recognised in Canada as a distinct breed — whence the name originated.

More modern Tonkinese cats are the result of the crossbreeding programs of two breeders working independently of each other. Margaret Conroy, of Canada, and Jane Barletta, of the United States, crossed the Siamese and Burmese breeds, with the aim of creating the ideal combination of both parent breeds' distinctive appearance and lively personalities. The cats thus produced were moved from crossbreed classification to an established breed in 2001. The name is a reference to the Tonkin region of Indochina, though it is suggestive only, as the cats have no connection with the area.

In the West, Tonkinese cats under the age of sixth months have historically been referred to as "small-cats" rather than "kittens" to reflect a more direct translation from Burmese, although this term has become almost obsolete since the mid-20th century.

Like both parent breeds, Tonkinese are active, vocal and generally people-oriented cats, playful and interested in everything going on around them; however, this also means they are easily susceptible to becoming lonesome or bored!

Back from the vets. I thought I was fairly immune to embarrassment caused by Freddie, but today we hit a new low. There was a photographer there to take photos for the new website. He wanted a cat and a dog to pose. There were plenty of beautiful, well behaved and personable dogs to choose from ... and Freddie.

Right from the start I said I was happy for Fred to be photographed, but that he couldn't come out of his cage, as we would never get him back in again without injury! Needless to say, all the staff backed me up on this. With Freddie, injuries have occured during handling him for essential reasons, and there's no way this was essential. All the time, Fred kept growling, hissing and swearing, and when the photographer put his camera near the cage, Freddie launched himself towards the photographer, mouth open wide in the most perfect snarl (really not what you want when you're trying to persuade people that this is a happy friendly practice!) . So we got a good picture of the inside of Fred's mouth, complete with a full set of teeth .

At this point the photographer withdrew, and said in a highly offended tone that black cats are difficult to photograph anyway. I do agree in principle, as all too often Jude (black) comes out as a black blob when I try and photograph her, but, the photographer is supposed to be a professional, so should be able to overcome these challenges! I pointed out that Fred is black with plenty of white to form a good contrast , and it is possible to take a good photo of himwhen he's in the right mood!

Freddie continued to swear and grumble throughout his consultation, but Vet D is used to this and didn't turn a hair. So, Freddie has now had his boosters, his certificate has been signed, and the vet is happy to prescribe a Gabapentin capsule whenever I need to trim Fred's nails on future . And when I went back I to reception, the photographer had gone, so at least I didn't have to face him again! :D

DH has now taken the car to the office today and will go straight from there to choral practice this evening, so I should have some uninterrupted hours to work on the house. My plan is to get the sitting room done today as usual, and if possible to also do something in the kitchen, to save time tomorrow morning. But first a walk!

Good morning, kitty ~ and all incoming! Saw you in here by your lonesome.
The photographer should be the one embarrassed - which it seemed like he was. He was very well warned. Freddy won the lottery when he got you for a kitty mamma. :D
Dogged ~ thank you for your kind words. Right now, it seems quite overwhelming. But.. one day at a time, one step at a time.....

Today's short list:
• gym
• Flooring Surfaces to look at tile and carpet
• Work on townhouse update plan & solidify

I see you survived Fred's appointment, Kitty. I've never heard of Tonkinese cats. I googled them - and to my untrained eye, they look identical to Siamese cats. Both are beautiful breeds! Their name makes me think of the HP character "Tonks".
I think I'll go with Doggedly's comment yesterday that I just needed a day to chill. I got a few things done, but not a lot. But I'm feeling more motivated today! :)
Sounds like a fun plan, Smile! We still get back to TX 1X/ year to visit very special friends there. We try to go during Michigan winter, which sometimes feels like half the year. LOL! We lived in Austin for 8? years. All 3 of our kids were born there. Love that city. It has grown a lot since we left; traffic has gotten bad.

Today: Well, it is almost 8 a.m. and I'm up drinking coffee. Critter control will be here at 9 to give us an estimate; dh is wanting to get more serious about the mice that move into our house every fall. There is currently something in our attic as well that sounds larger than a mouse. But mice can make a surprisingly large amount of noise. This is a downside of older houses. I'm going to my weekly get together, with S2, K, and J at J's home this morning. I'm not sure when she wants us there. Then, I'll swing by the school to drop off my old books and pick up my new books. 1-3 will be Prof Dev meetings online. I need to get to the gym for cardio -- and then we're hosting Tuesday dinner 6:30 - 8:30ish. Maybe 6 people? I need to go to WF (again - dh didn't get the recipe to me yesterday) to pick up lamb shanks, GF pasta, and romano cheese, etc. Progress setting up my class for tomorrow would be great. I have been given another "grammar" class, the advanced one this session. I think the textbook is one I haven't used before.

It has just started raining/sleeting. Dh is currently out on his morning run, sprints today. I hope he's careful if the path gets slippery.

Morning all. Goodness Freddie was very vocal he didn't want his picture taken. That will be a one of a kind shot anyway though not exactly proving the point.

Smile lee that's a lot of changes. Good for lil h and her mom you will still be around. And the new place sounds breathtaking. I'm sure with all that has happened the last couple years something completely new will be good for you.

Helian let me know what the pest control does. Ds and ddil have squirrels in the attic. I think they go in and out cause they live in their surrounding trees. Have to catch them all out before figuring out where they get in.

Yes my headache did eventually get better yesterday but I'm tired. I also wonder ... this menopause age thing might be wreaking havoc still. I just feel tired. Sore. Emotional. My crochet is still defeating me... life should be somewhat under control as dad has help now. They missed yesterday at the care home cause of her scan appointments. Sounds like it went ok though today could be rest day. That should balance out better. Key word... should... what might come next.

Ds is 16 now too. He didn't want a big thing. Just ds and ddil and dgs. We had lunch and I went and got him a cheesecake from the store.

I think my morning is going to consist of shower. Finish qt. Figure out my crochet again. I need a method of knowing I keep the pattern. One row is double crochet and chain. Next row goes into all the stitches. It looks so pretty but missing one chain makes one less stitch next row. It's an absent minded repeat that you don't notice till next row and I can't seem to get a full row 100 percent...

Coming through again.

Lauralind, so glad that your dad has help now. I used to crochet as well as knit - but I haven't done it in ages. Hope you can get some rest and shake the tiredness.

Critter control will be here between 9 and 12. These long windows are kinda obnoxious; dh has to stay home this morning to meet them.

Next:
- WF
- put food away
- gather stuff (knitting, books for payroll) and head out again.

Done:
- s2s and self care
- back exercises
- looked at recipe; made a list for WF (short)
