Re: Winter Wonderland Wednesday
A winter wonderland or Christmas fair is a funfair held mainly in the United Kingdom around the Christmas season. In the Little Ice Age, when the European climate was much cooler, frost fairs on frozen rivers provided outdoor skating and other entertainment, but these died out by the 19th century as winters became milder. Winter wonderlands are a relatively recent invention – the UK does not have a tradition of Christmas markets as seen in Germany, and the weather in December is now usually too mild for snow or ice..
The modern British winter wonderland started in the end of the 29th century. One of the first was the Christmas fair on Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh, started in 1999 partly to reduce crowding at Hogmanay following a crowd crush, and which became "Edinburgh's Christmas".
The Hyde Park Winter Wonderland was another early winter wonderland in the UK, opening in 2005 as a modest funfair organised by The Royal Parks, but it significantly expanded after it was taken over by private enterprise in 2007 and by 2012 the event encompassed ice skating, a ferris wheel, multiple rollercoasters and themed areas such as a Bavarian village, a circus and "Santa Land". In 2019 it drew niver 3 million guests.
Many other British cities host winter wonderlands similar to the Christmas markets held on the European continent, and usually include attractions such as a German-style Christmas market, Santa's grotto, amusement rides and ice skating rinks. Winter wonderlands range from small-scale single-day events to large city centre fairs lasting several weeks, with some of the largest being held in Nottingham, Portsmouth, Norwich, York, Newcastle upon Tyne and Birmingham.
Independent winter wonderlands are also common, similar in format to a travelling carnival, and the often high prices and poor quality attractions at these have become notorious. Journalist Isabelle Fraser, writing in The Daily Telegraph, described "rubbish British Christmas festival" as being a "tradition", saying:
"But like the widely derided round robin Christmas missives, these Christmas disasters have become such a satisfying British tradition we could hardly let a December go past without pictures of a muddy field, sad reindeer and crying children and their irate parents."

Re: Winter Wonderland Wednesday
Good morning everyone and happy Wednesday!
L.Ann, thank you for the explanation, tjosenoce sculptures look amazing!
Helia, I'm.glad the window washers were a success.
Smilelee, a good haircut can make all the difference!
Trissie, I'm glad you had one less errand to run.
Dogged, I hope the scratchy throat does come to anything.
I never made it back yesterday, but I did get the sitting room cleaned, and once DH had been launched to his choral practice, I made the most of my evening alone. I filed paperwork, printed off those receipts where I need to claim back the money, and also printed off Freddie's HPC renewal (complimentary Petplan).
Then the real fun began. I brought out all the Chris shopping, ticked it off against my list and organised everything, so when I do get rid d to doing some wrapping I know where everything is . And I checked my supplied for the Christmas cake - I need to order Brazil nuts and walnut halves.
Today DH goes to the office and I'm at home. IRS suppsed to rain, so a good opportunity to do things inside!

Re: Winter Wonderland Wednesday
DH has left for work, and the house is quiet. Ive made a DPC, sorted a little admin, and done my physio exercises and stretches. So I'm feeling ready to tackle the rest of my day. A.d the weather forecast was wrong in the best way. We had a hard frost last night and instead of rain we now have blue sky and sun.
So no gardening as it's all frozen solid, but hopefully a good walk today.

Re: Winter Wonderland Wednesday
Today is progressing, but not exactly as planned. (Does it ever?
) However, I *think* the details for parish Christmas lunch are now finalised, I've emailed the caterers with the numbers, and texted those people who still haven't paid, checking they still want to come. Fortunately, all the people who told me they don't like buffets / only eat white food / won't come unless there's alcohol served/ don't like mince pies, have all decided not to come, so hopefully everyone that *is* coming will enjoy themselves. I keep reminding my self that you can never please everyone!
I've had a long text conversation with DF PL - were meeting for coffee Friday morning at the community shop.
The rubbish is bagged up and I've taken it down to the wheelie bins. I've had a short walk, but I need to be around for the post man, so I'll just do a few more turns round the block for now.

Re: Winter Wonderland Wednesday
You are impressively organized with Christmas, Kitty. Are you sure you're a SHE?
You've done a great job with the parish lunch too. What is "white food" out of curiosity?
I'm here - coughing a bit more. *sigh* I've just texted my personal trainer to see if I should come in or not. I'm going to check back in in an hour and see if I feel any different.
Smile, so glad you found a great haircut!! What is it like?
Yesterday was quite productive for me: I went to the morning weekly get together of friends K, S2, and J. I got 2 packages ready and then put in the mail. I went to 3 grocery stores
I now think I've got everything I need to get us through the visit with my brother + niece. I do need to go pick up the ribs ~ 2 pm today. I finished the GGT project for payroll + other payroll odds and ends. I made a nice dinner of teriyaki salmon and steamed asparagus. In the evening, I showed dh the work I'd done finding bnbs near ds + F's house -- and we booked one for a trip to WA after Christmas, with the girls. I did not make progress on memorial thank yous OR get in any significant exercise. I only folded and bagged one load of my mom's stuff, so I did not make more progress on that project. I showered last night, so I don't feel I need to shower again this morning; my hair is manageable. LOL!
Today: the main goal is to get the guest room ready for dbro + dniece. I need to wash 1 set of sheets (or find another set), make up 2 beds, move mom's stuff out -- or, ideally, finish washing and bagging her stuff. I'll make a mid-afternoon trip to WF, which might be rather zoo-y, but it can't be helped. Dbro + dniece will also arrive mid-afternoon-ish. I'll make a pot of chili, cornbread, and a salad for dinner tonight. I might make blueberry muffins for the morning - for dbro and dniece. Dh and I don't really eat breakfast.

Re: Winter Wonderland Wednesday
Morning all. Kittykat you really are organized with Christmas. I don't know how you do it. And it's probably a bit of a relief in some ways that those people are not coming. Up to them I guess. White food? Hmm.
Helian I hope you feel better soon. Sometimes the cough gets worse for a bit before better it seems. That will be good getting to see baby again after Christmas.
Quiet morning here. I'm trying to motivate myself and decide what to do with the day. My friend h i think is coming here at 1. Other than that I have no plans . House needs attention. Some organizing in the bedrooms. And I have got to start organizing some Christmas shopping. I am so bad at that. And with us planning dd and dsil place this year I can't be wrapping last minute and such. I'm still going to put up some decor. There's music stuff. And banquet. Cookie exchange. Planning craft time with ddil and my sister sometime. Oh and I have to talk to my sister and ddil and plan something to do Christmas with mom and dad here early I guess. Lots of planning.
And figure out how ds16is this morning. He did something to his shoulder and not sure what. He missed Monday and Tuesday school. When I got home last night it was a bit better so see how he feels. If it's still going to be so sore that might be my day getting it checked out. Probably from wrestling but it didn't start right then.
Oh wait some appointments stuff to do too. I am supposed to have a phone appointment with gc on Monday but he sent me a file to read with some things to try and I can't open it. Hence haven't done it. Should rebook and maybe figure a different format for the info? Massage. Hair. And December might be try try again at the iron and b12?
