Vanillekipferl are Austrian, German, Swiss, Czech, Slovak and Hungarian small, crescent-shaped biscuits. They were originally made with walnuts, but almonds or hazelnuts can also be used. They get their typical flavour from a heavy dusting of vanilla sugar.
Vanillekipferl originate from Vienna in Austria and are traditionally made at Christmas. They are very well known in Europe and are often for sale in Viennese coffee shops and bakeries, especially during Christmas time. They are said to have been created in the shape of the Turkish crescent moon symbolizing the celebration of the victory over the Turkish in 1683 at the Battle of Vienna.
They are also widely baked in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and among the Danube Swabian diaspora as a part of the typical Christmas baking. Since Advent in Germany is celebrated by several denominations of Christianity on the four Sundays preceding Christmas, many kinds of biscuits and sweets are consumed during this time and have become typical for winter.
Unlike other pastries, this particular kind is difficult to bake. The raw dough is very soft because it contains a high amount of butter and it must be shaped quickly with cool hands. After baking, the Kipferl are very fragile and the baker must be very cautious when rolling them in the sugar and vanilla mixture while they are still hot from the oven.

Yes, these are a **** to make. 2 inches long, half an inch thick, just right curvation, slightly thicker in the middle, all must look the same. You underbake them by a minute, they break apart. You overbake them by a minute, they fall apart. You bake them just right... yeah 
And yes, I make them, as does everybody. Triple batch this year, as I finished the first batch late in the evening and left it cooling on the counter. There were 8 left when I got home from work the next day

Good morning Trissie and thank you for starting us off. I think that having only eight vanilla rolls left when you got home is a huge tribute to your baking skills! 
Helia, I'm glad DH managed to fix your windscreen washers. That must be a big relief for you driving today.
Dogged, that was a very interesting conversation about fostering / adoption. Our friends C and R adopted a little boy (2yo) through a church adoption system, and although J was very hard work, especially in the younger years, he's turned out very well, and is now married to a lovely lady, has a very good job, they've bought a house together and have two dogs. C did get a lot of after adopt support from the agency, and I remember she used to take J out a lot for very long walks, so he could run about and burn off his energy,, in the grounds of a local National Trust property.
I know another couple who adopted two half sisters at a similar age, but, sadly, it wasn't such a success. Both the girls had "issues", especially the youngest one, who, last time I saw them was being tested for FAS and RAD. They adopted through the local authority, and didn't get much post adoption back up.at all, and last time I saw them, several years ago, they were struggling. I recently read an article about children in the UK who are sadly returned to the system post adoption, mainly because their behaviour is so extreme (and the parents are given very little support) that the parents are left unable to cope.
And, of course, my own experience with adopting cats. They're all different, with their own personalities and.experiences which they bring with them. Fortunately we've had plenty of back up and support from the vet, and in some cases, a behaviourist.
Today DH goes to the office. We are also supposed to have a dry, sunny day. Some, my plans are for some time in my garden and a walk round the estate. It would also be good to get that shoebox done, and to do some decorating for Christmas.

Ooh, I think I've had those cookies before - or something similar, trissie. Are they kind of like shortbread? Have a good day at payroll! Friday is almost here.
Both my adoptive brothers had issues, Kitty. My older brother became a drug addict and was violent, and my younger brother - well, he's not super functional and other people do almost everything for him. Dh and I considered adopting ourselves instead of having dd27, but bc of the dysfunction in my own family, I was against it - even though I myself am adopted. I hope you do get a nice walk in!
Well, we didn't get a lot of snow last night, but we did get some freezing rain. The roads are icy and the schools are cancelled - not our school though. We only cancel if the university cancels, and it has only cancelled classes like 3? times in the last 25 years -- all for temps around -40F windchill. I remember the number bc it was a temperature where celsius and fahrenheit temps have the same #. (Students from southern states and California weren't dressing properly going between buildings for classes. . . and parents were complaining.)
Today: This morning, I need to prep for class, pack for my 1 night trip, finish folding and putting away laundry (not much), and ideally get one exam draft ready to send out for review. Groceries should arrive in about an hour, and I'll put them away. 1:15, I'll head to payroll. I suspect attendance will be low; parents who need to take care of children will stay home since schools are closed. Most of our students are from warmer climates and aren't used to snow and icy roads; some of them will probably stay home as well, especially if they drive to school and especially if they have to drive a long way. A few students drive in 1-2 hours (!). The student from Russia will probably be thinking: what's the big deal?

helia ~ yeah... my memories of Michigan winter weather would be 50 - 60 years ago.
That was when we were still required to wear dresses to school. Walking to the bus stop was murder - mainly because I was too proud to wear pants under my dress. That was NOT cool. If I could just talk to my younger self... Temps here are going to start dipping today and not change much for the next 14. I think some more snow is coming as well.
Butternut squash - I found a recipe years ago that folded butternut squash into mashed potatoes and seasoned with salt, pepper, and CUMIN! It's delish!
Foster care: Thank you for sharing, helia & Dogged. We became official foster parents to get my dsis' kids out of foster care of Florida. They denied my dmom - for logical reasons - her age - and she worked 50 hours a week. We became official so we couldn't be denied placement. We went from 2 - 7 kids in one day. Ds/A was 8 months old. We had them for 2 years - and it was an adventurous time. God supplied big time. Within a week, all the kids had bicycles. For a month, we had a mountain of clothes for the kids to pick from. Somebody gave us a $300 gift certificate at Sam's. That was a LOT back then. Eventually, they were reunited with their dm through counseling. Looking back, it would've been helpful if I had done counseling. The most wonderful thing about that time is how ds/M responded. You'd think that after being an only child for 5 years, and having a new baby brother to have to share time with, that it would've been difficult. He never once complained. He loved it all - just rolled right from being an "only" to 1 of 7.

All three of my girls are adopted and we know lots of people with adopted kiddos. I think it is often more difficult than people anticipate. DD41 was adopted at 9 years old and it was predictably the hardest initial transition. All 3 girls ended up doing well but I think it is often hard for people to have reasonable expectations and it requires a lot of adjustment for everyone in the family.

Morning all. Interesting conversations on adoption and fostering. There's an older couple in church that fostered for many many years. Sweet people. The older of the fosters is ds 27 friend and was his best man. He's turned out wonderfully. Some of the others too I think. The poor last bunch I don't know.. the system went off the rails. Those kids were in a very stable home and for some reason the system decided the siblings all needed to be together and took them to a commercial home without direct parent/ guardians support. It's sad.
Anyways I need to figure out how to fix my schedule again. Yesterday I woke up at 4. I was so tired and barely functioning at the end of the day. I think I fell asleep on the couch like 830 or so. But then 3 am said I'm wide awake... ugh. I need to figure out how to stay awake longer so I don't do it again...
How do I figure out my day. H is coming 1030 this morning. Then probably pick up mom 230 again. Other than that I am signed up for 2 cookie exchanges for next week. Plus Sunday is the banquet which includes baking buns on Saturday and figuring out music. I don't think I am in charge
. But I am playing piano but who is deciding what? I need to know so I can prep myself or let go of the stress and let someone else tell me what to play.
Plus some shopping and figure out Christmas gifts... I had ideas but I don't think that's going to be practical and work out. Gift shopping is up there with top stressor.... oh and I need to discuss plans with dad so he understands what is happening when we are leaving for Alberta and what we will do for family here. And see if the dog kennel I know of has room for Casper. And be ready to leave a week from Saturday... how does Christmas always seem like lots of time and suddenly it's panic mode???
