The fig roll or fig bar is a biscuit or cookie consisting of a rolled cake or pastry filled with fig paste.

Figs have been a popular food since ancient times, originating in the areas of the Mediterranean and Asia Minor.

Early Egyptians may have invented the first fig roll—a simple pastry made with fig paste and a flour-based dough. In the Middle Ages, the Arab physician Ibn Butlan is recorded to have recommended eating figs with biscuits, or sugared bread—an early instance of what could be considered a fig roll.

Fig rolls were popular with British immigrants in the United States in the late 19th century.

Good morning, everyone, and happy Friday!

Gma,.the St Lucia service sounds lovely! Goo luck with all the wrapping! I really need to set do and do more wrapping too. Today is *supposed* to be dry amd sunny, so maybe this evening?

Dogged, how strange about the calendar - was it in a "safe" place?

I have a free Friday today, so I need to use it well. Top of the list is to email the vet to order Fred's and Matilda's meds and food, so it's in before Christmas. (I think the cut off date for meds is 17/12, but food has to be ordered in amd often takes lo ger to arrive, so I want to be in good time.) The forecast today is for , so, if that is true, then I would like to do something in my garden, and go for a walk, to make the most of the good weather. . Maybe I could also start in the indoor decorations - the Christmas cards are.sraetig to arrive, so getting the card holders up would be a good idea - that way the cards would be properly displayed.. Wrapping is also a priority - maybe late afternoon when it starts to get dark? DH is out tomorrow with his DF, so I can do some more wrapping then, but it would be good to at least do some today!

Good morning, Bama!

Interesting about animals and language. Does their ability to pick up whatever language their owner make them multilingual?

Bama, I really don't know! Our experience with Matilda made me think this could be the case, but she is a very confident outgoing cat, who has been well socialised buy her rescuer and foster carer . OTOH, maybe it's just the tone of voice she follows? "Matilda, supper time!" said in an excited tone, is going to attract her attention.

I've just remembered I read about some of the people who adopted dogs from Romania having to learn commands like "sit" in Romanian to help the dog settle, as the poor dog was very confused and upset and didn't understand what was happening to them, and commands in Romanian helped give them some continuity.

So, I'm not sure if it's somehow a species thing, (are cats naturally more multilingual?) or whether it's because many of the dogs that are adopted from Romania are far more traumatised and have a lot more "issues" (often needing professional help to sort out) than the cats, or whether it's become we "command" dogs (sit, stay, fetch!) but tend to "suggest" things to cats, who then decide whether or not they're interested, or if they want to carry on doing their own thing, or whether we just got lucky with Matilda!

Animals are so cool.
I’ve seen people train German shepherds to respond to only German here but I think it’s more so bad people can’t take control of the dog without knowing the German language. These were more guard dogs than pets.
Of course, maybe I could learn French or Spanish if I was given a treat for every new word I learned on repeat lol.

I have one box ready to be taped, then go to the post office tomorrow. It's for my sister who will be alone for Christmas, so hers is the first box to be prepared. There are 2 gifts in it "from Mom," as mother had done some after Christmas shopping last year, so everybody is getting something from Mother. I get a set with peart earrings and a single pearl necklace, held in place with a tiny bar and "cubic zirconia" (fake diamonds). I was with her and that was what I picked out for myself. Others are getting a sparkle cz necklace, and 1 gets a mother-of-pearl heart necklace. There will be some sweaters that I wrap as well.
After I get all the gifts done and mailed for those who are 500-2000 miles away, I can start to focus on local, which includes ds and family.

Now it's bedtime here, I have a morning appointment, then some shopping in afternoon after I get the mail posted.

You are wise to get your cats' needs taken care of before the Christmas rush/shutdowns.
On the subject of dogs and commands, they catch tone of voice more easily than words, so will respond to that more easily. That said, when I adopted Momentum, he responded so well to both English and French commands that I had had him a few months before we worked out which language he was trained in. He was definitely bilingual, but we concluded that he was a French dog who also spoke English.
I can understand that the Romanian dogs would be confused, as people are suddenly associating a new sound with concepts that the dog has learned, and expecting him to understand the new sound without being trained for it.

I have emailed the vet with all the meds / food requests, sent another (difficult) message to someone else, hung the Christmas card holders over the kitchen door and rounded up the cards we have received so far, and now I'm about to see if Fred wants his walk. We had rain overnight, although it's sunny now, so I've waited until the paths have dried up so he doesn't get wet, cold paws, which he dislikes, but he dislikes having his paws wiped even more!
