A singing hinny or singin' hinny is a type of bannock, griddle cake or scone, made in the north of England, especially Northumberland and the coal-mining areas of the North East] In Scotland, they are known as fatty cutties.

Hinny is a term of endearment in the dialects of the Newcastle area, often applied to young women and children. The singing refers to the sounds of the sizzling of the lard or butter in the rich dough as it is cooked on a hot plate or griddle.

The ingredients typically include flour, baking powder, lard or butter, currants, milk or buttermilk and salt and/or sugar to taste. A dough is made which is rich in fat. This is then rolled into a round flat cake, which is then cooked on a flat griddle or in a skillet. Traditionally it is made as one large cake, but it can also be made into multiple smaller cakes.

Good morning everyone and happy Saturday!

L.Ann, that is great news about your DD!

Dogged, I hope you had a good phone visit with your DDro.

Gma, I can totally understand not wanting to go out in those temperatures! Is there.mich snow and ice, or is it just super cold?

Hoping everything is ok with Trissie and her family.

Funny Matilda story - last night when I announced bed time, she decided to disappear u Der the sofa and then climb up I side it. I do t like this behaviour, so I just ignore it, also she has shown that she's able to get back out again when she wants to. So I showed her supper to the nose, one eye and one paw that was visible, and went to bed and shut the door. This morning there was a scratch at the bedroom door, andin she shot, very hungry and headed
straight for her food bowl. She is also outraged that I called her bluff last night, and she had to sleep on the carpet somewhere instead of the nice soft warm bed (with electric blanket!) that she is used to, and therefore is Not Speaking to me.

Today I must do some present wrapping and I would like to decorate the tree. DH is out with his DF, so I should have plenty of time. I also need to make some more mince pies, as they e nearly all been eaten already!

Happy Saturday!

Must confess I never hear of Singing Hinny scones, kittykatt! My choice for Saturday, had I been up early enough, would have been snickerdoodles or sugarcookies :-)

The reason I was not up early enough was me having done a wrapathlon that ended at 1:30am, but I am done wrapping everything all gifts that have been delivered so far. I only wanted to work on it till midnight, but the was like "in for a penny, in for a pound" and just did it. DBD is gone with the scouts for the weekend, and I need to drop off DS (he's going a day late) in 1:20, so I better get going!

0245 a.m. home from accomplishing 2 boxes ready for the mail. I have the packing tape at my house, so I will do the address and tape, then go to bed.
We have complete winter here - snow (I have shoveled multiple times, not something I count), ice, from mixed rain snow precipitation, brief melting of snow, then refreezing, and cold. The one good thing is that it doens't snow when the temp is below 0. In all my life, I don't think I have seen that happen more and once or twice. The truth is, I don't remember it ever happening. Air that cold is very dry, so there's not much "fuel" for making snow.
I have ot have these boxes to the post office by 0945, so I need to get them taped and get myself to bed.
Then there's an advent brunch at church tomorrow morning right after I get these in the mail.
After that, I will have 2 more boxes to fill and mail. Then I can work on local, on decorating my tree, baking, and cleaning my house.
I have never heard of a singing hinny either. Nor has the term appeared in any book I have read.
trissie, sugar cookies sound good, as do snickerdoodles - tho I have to look up the recipe to see how they differ from sugar cookies. Do they have cinnamon and sugar sprinkled on top? I have never made them, as we have so many other recipes that we do at Christmas time.

◕‿◕ * * * Good Morning! * * * ◕‿◕

Kittykatt, thanks for the start! So these are cookies we can make without an oven. I just watched a video, they have to be really flat to cook properly I think.

trissie how brave, a night time wrapathlon ! I was sorry to read about family drama earlier this week.

Gma how courageous of you to go out in this cold weather !

Another week has gone past. I managed to lurk from payroll so no real need to CUOP - I couldn't resist the cookie theme. I think wrapping is in order here too, and a bit more shopping - only one present for DS9 so far (not counting his bday presents).
We got a parcel from Amazon that wasn't for us, the address is 10 kms away. When I asked, the Amazon bot says we can keep the parcel but I don't agree. I searched the people on the label and found them on LinkedIn (I think), I left a message. I drive past their house or almost on my way back from payroll so maybe I can bring it to them on Monday.
Headache this morning so MrNG drove the kids to handball and athletics. Yesterday I hoped he could drive them so I could do some much-needed cleaning, but I don't feel up to it. I'm in my bed and keeping the screen light to low. I don't usually have migraine. I hope it's not the flu, many cases right now.

TADA
up, paracetamol, instant coffee
MrNG cooked me eggs
MrNG took the kids to sports
searched the address online for the misdelivered Amazon parcel, found them on LinkedIn, sent message

TODO
wrap MrNG's birthday presents
not sure what's next

Good morning, Trissie and FFB, and good night, Gma!

Trissie, WTG on your wrapathon! It must feel very good to have got that our if the way.

I hope you feel better soon, FFB. That is very kind of you to take the time and trouble to track down the correct recipients of the Amazon parcel.

Sleep well, Gma! How very satisfying to have those boxes ready nto take to the post office. Your description of all that cold, snow and ice sounds like another world.

Singing hinnies appear in the traditional sea shanty Billy Boy, which we learnt at school, and I've managed to find online, where a young man is being quizzed about the qualities and abilities of the girl who he hopes to make his wife.

WARNING before.anyone clicks the link - in the version I was taught, the song ended after the fourth verse, so I've always assumed that was it.. (You will see why!) The subsequent verses that are listed are definitely Not Suitable for children!!!

DH has left already, Jude is asleep on the bed, and it's time for me to get up!

gma, as per wikipedia:
Sugar cookie made with butter or oil, sugar, and flour rolled in cinnamon sugar. Most distinctive feature is the cracked surface that can be crisp or soft depending on preparation.
Very simple cookie made from sugar, flour, butter, eggs, vanilla, and either baking powder or baking soda. They are often glazed with icing and decorated with chocolate or sprinkles and may be themed according to season (e.g. Halloween cookies or Christmas cookies).
I never made either, so can't compare! :-)
Yay for getting two boxes ready to be mailed, and not yay for the weather. Refreezing is like the worst - our driveway is slightly uphill (and made of concrete bricks) and one year I wasn't able to get the car to stay there, it kept sliding back to the street!

Frenchie, I think it's a law that you do not have to do anything about packages that you didn't order. Here, at least - it's a reaction to once popular practise of unoderded goods being delivered with an invoice. Ugh about the migraine! That sucks big time any time of the year, but pre-Christmas even worse! So both your boys AND DH have birthday in December? Now... we all know what men in MrNiceGuy's family do in March! :-)

kittykatt, I think a lot of old time songs are about relations that everybody knew were not only for married people! I remember singing a traditional song with the school choir that went something like (it does rhyme in Czech)
a bedsheet has four corners, and under it are four legs
she ate sugar she drank coffee just to be pretty
sugar and coffee are of no help if her belly keeps growing

and even in grade 6 I knew what that one was about! :-)
