Re: Sausages (Pigs in Blankets) Saturday
Pigs in blankets are small sausages ,like chipolata, wrapped in streaky bacon and cooked in the oven until the sausage is cooked and the bacon is crispy . They are a quintessential and beloved part of a traditional British Christmas dinner, considered an essential festive staple by many, with an estimated 128 million eaten each Christmas Day in the UK as a popular side dish or canapé.
They're a beloved accompaniment to turkey and other roast dinner trimmings, as well as a popular party food for Christmas gatherings.
They appear everywhere during the holiday season, from supermarket shelves (with many varieties, including vegan options) to TV adverts, and are a firm favourite for taste and texture.
However, they are actually defined differently all around the world, and the UK is rather alone in its bacon-wrapped culinary tradition.
In the US, pigs in blankets (or ‘pigs in a blanket’, as they’re more commonly dubbed) are typically small sausages wrapped not in bacon but in croissant or biscuit dough, similar to "sausage rolls" in the UK.
In Israel, pigs in blankets are typically referred to as Moshe B’Tayva, or Moses in the Ark. Like Americans, their version of the festive snack sees puff pastry rolled over kosher hotdogs, and they’re typically served with ketchup.
Meanwhile, in Germany, the meaty treat is affectionately known as Würstchen im Schlafrock (aka ‘sausage in a dressing gown’), and it also comprises of a sausage wrapped in puff pastry, which cheese often added into the mix.
Mexican pigs in blankets are sausages wrapped in tortillas and deep fried in vegetable oil, and they’re known as “salchitaco” which is basically a mish-mash of the word salchicha (sausage) and taco (sausage taco).
Finally, China’s pig in blanket equivalent is known as Lap Cheong Bao and is a pastry encased sausage which is steamed rather than baked.

Re: Sausages (Pigs in Blankets) Saturday
Good morning, everyone, and happy Saturday!
Helia, what a wonderful experience for two teenage girls to see the US and stay with lovely welcoming family as you and your DH. Like Dogged, the necessity of good health insurance also came to mind. Of course it's something o e always hopes won't be necessary, but essential to have.
Dogged, I'm guessing your having g some well deserved sleep by now - WTG with everything you got done yesterday.
I was wakened as usual in the small hours, but the men crashing about and running up and downstairs. Fortunately I managed to persuade Matilda that it was still night time and that we should both go back to sleep.
Today is dry ATM but rain is forecast, so I have suggested to the men that they take waterproofs.with them.whem they go out on their adventures today. Jude is now stretched out on the bed beside me - I need to get up in a minute as I need to be showered and dressed before I feel able to deal with the chaos that will no doubt greet me downstairs.
Today's plans include the neighbourhood Christmas get together at the community shop, and , if the weather holds, DNeighbour S will probably want to do more work on his fence. I also need to work on email no.3, and hopefully get that sent. (Email no. 4 has to wait until I've heard from the recipient of email no 2, which may or may not be before Christmas, but maybe I could start drafting it?)
I also need to check my lists and see what else needs doing. Could I finally make a start on shortening those curtains for the kitchen?

Re: Sausages (Pigs in Blankets) Saturday
◕‿◕ * * * Good Morning! * * * ◕‿◕
Thank you kittykatt for the start ! We sometimes eat pigs in a blanket those of us who eat meat, using puff pastry as a blanket. I hope your weekend with your DBIL goes smoothly. Not sure what the emails are about, I probably need to CUOP.
Kids are on Christmas break, MrNG will be home until January (with reports to write and two contracts as self-employed to work on !), and I will work Monday and Tuesday only the upcoming week.
Today is DS10's birthday, he invited his DF A--- for a sleepover and until tomorrow evening. Right now he is at athlectics practice. DS7 has a handball lesson in the afternoon instead of morning because of a "Christmas tree" event, meaning the kids will probably have something to eat and get some kind of present from the handball club.
MrNG left home early to pick up the weekly groceries, including some holiday stuff. Most of our meals for Christmas Eve and Christmas will not involve too much cooking and we're not having any guests, so that's not too stressful.
TADAs
up, DS10 fed and ready for sports
MrNG drove back with the groceries, now everything is put away
including some tetris-style strategy in order to put everything into the freezer
TODO right now :
some cleaning indoors ! because of afternoon guest
wrap DS10's birthday presents, including a skate board (can it be wrapped?)
see with DS7 if he helps wrapping a (small) present
have lunch ready by 12 sharp - in order to have time to blow candles and give presents for dessert and be on time at 1.30 for handball !

Re: Sausages (Pigs in Blankets) Saturday
Well, I certainly wouldn't say no to a pig in the blanket, no matter which version, kittykatt! We do stuffing rolls in bacon with the Christmas turkey, and it's something my English step-father enjoys very much.
Happy birthday to DS10, Frenchie! Is that sleepover his "party", or did he already have (or will have in the new year) a bigger birthday party?
I'm having a slow morning, very much needed, but it's time to stop being slow and start being active! Dogged really got me interested in the slow cooker, what can I load mine with?
DH and kids will set up the tree in the morning, and then we have a batch of gingerbreads for the afternoon - I haven't gotten to decorating the nativity yet! And the bed linens need changing and generally every room in the house would deserve a bit of attention, not to talk about still leftover items from the holiday deep cleaning. I will compile a list to go through in the new year, but the fewer items there, the better!

That actually sounds like fun, helian. Some of the new rules they are discussing for visitors to the US might be a concern though if they actually implement them.

Re: Sausages (Pigs in Blankets) Saturday
Well, as far as I am concerned, the new travelling rules make USA a place I am not likely to visit. Kinda pity, a week in New York was on my list (Broad Way shows and The Metropolitan Museum of Art and I'd be a happy camper), but I am not giving up the privacy of my children or making my social networks public under my real name, thank you very much, I've had a real life dangerous stalker and I prefer my name to NOT be searchable! But there's plenty other lovely locations for me to explore - my original plan was London, but since I will do a minitour of London with DS in June, I am exploring other options. My obvious choice should be Rome or Athens (I will never get over my love of antiquity as an era, and Renaissance art of the Italian school), but I fear it may be too hot in August? Madrid, maybe, but the Spanish Renaissance is not my favourite, and let's not even get into the Flemish Renaissance school, I kinda have a strong dislike of that one, though Amsterdam is home to the Van Gogh museum!
I kinda really love how finally being able to visit world museums made me aware of what I enjoy in art and have preferences. My first big solo trip, the Vienna one last year, helped me discover what I like to do (visit history sites and museums) and what I don't care about (eating in fancy restaurants, shopping, and bars), and this year's Paris just cemented the very specifics (antiquity art yes, medieval paintings no, but architecture yes, rennaisance art from Italy yes, impressionism yes, modern arts no)
It's happy thoughts that keep me afloat, so... bear with me!
L.Ann, a Cirque de Solei type of Christmas show is definitely a yes on my list!

Re: Sausages (Pigs in Blankets) Saturday
Kitty, this brought back happy memories for me! When we lived in New Zealand for a year, I ordered a sausage roll at school for lunch every day. I was introduced to them there, and I loved them! I remember the woman who took our orders seeing me and saying, "sausage roll", and I was so amazed that she knew my order. LOL! I was 6 years old at the time.
Enjoy the casino and the show, L Ann.
Sounds like Christmas-y things are happening at your house today, trissie.
Yes, trissie and L Ann, I'm not following new rules for travelers to the US so I don't know how that might affect 2 German teenage girls coming here to stay with family for 2 months. On tourist visas, I'd assume - but maybe rulese for those have changed too?
Today, I'm joining the girls at dd30's gym for some exercise. They might be swimming. Me - I'm going to do a little running and machine work. I also need to shop and cook for a meal for 10 adults tonight; I'm making a meal for the Gs and dropping it off at their home in a nearby town. BG is our ex-pastor and CG is the friend in the hospital with a brain tumor (non-cancerous) who almost died Sunday night. A group of friends, who supported him in the conflicts he had with the church elders and eventually left the church (as he has done as well), has surrounded them to help them through this time. Dh and I are hoping to go to a movie tonight at 6:30. RH will join. I still haven't bought more wrapping paper and tags, but we have about 90 gift tags - should be enough. LOL! And 5? rolls of wrapping paper, which is enough for us to start wrapping gifts.
Main Goals for Today:
1. Work out with girls at the gym
2. Procure groceries for cooking.
3. Cook a meal for 8 - 10 people.
4. Order dh's gift - time is getting short!
5. Progress on Thank yous.
6. Laundry? At least 1 load.
7. Fun - movie tonight!
Next:
- figure out ingredients I need for cooking
- make a Kroger order for the ingredients
- s2s - yes, before working out (my hair is going in many directions LOL!)
TaDas!
- up; weighed self
- coffee
- dw running
- checked payroll timesheet (some of my tasks are not part of the contract)
- checked bank account; moved $$
