Jane Marple, better known as Miss Marple, is a fictional character in Agatha Christie's crime novels and short stories. Miss Marple lives in the fictional English village of St Mary Mead and acts as an amateur consulting detective. Often characterised as an elderly spinster, she is one of Christie's best-known characters and has been portrayed numerous times on screen. Her first appearance was in a short story published in The Royal Magazine in December 1927, "The Tuesday Night Club", which later became the first chapter of The Thirteen Problems (1932). Her first appearance in a full-length novel was in The Murder at the Vicarage in 1930 and her last appearance was in Sleeping Murder in 1976.
Marple makes her first full-length appearance in The Murder at the Vicarage. In this early portrayal she is a gleeful gossip, sharp-tongued, and not always sympathetic. The residents of St Mary Mead respect her but often find her nosiness and habit of assuming the worst in others tiresome. In later novels, however, Christie softened her character: Miss Marple becomes a kinder, more thoughtful figure, though still an astute observer of human nature.
Marple's method of detection rests on shrewd intelligence and long observation of village life, which she believes reveals the full range of human failings. She frequently interprets new crimes by recalling past incidents and she has a talent for recognising the hidden significance of apparently casual remarks. At times she is aided by her friend Sir Henry Clithering, a retired Metropolitan Police commissioner, who supplies her with official information.

Although of independent means, Marple is not wealthy and relies in her old age on financial support from Raymond. Good morning Trissie and thank you for starting us off. Miss Marple is one of my favourite detectives , and IMHO Joan Hickson is by far the best TV version of her!
Dogged, what a good idea to store the robot without its batteries but all together in the same bag. You e got everything together when you need it, but there no chance it can go rogue while in the drawer!
Bama, "Darling, your dinner is in the dog!" would either be written on a note to a husband who came home late for supper, or he would be greeted with that expression by a justifiably frustrated wife. It dates to a time before fridges, microwaves and telephones were widespread, and the long suffering wife would have cooked a meal (from scratch!) for her husband, but he didn't come home at the expected time. His lateness could be due to work, but more often was due to him spending too long (and too much money!) at the local pub. So, the wife was justifiably irked. Without a fridge, you couldn't just cover your husband's dinner and pop into the fridge to keep, and there was no . microwave to reheat it quickly. Food was expensive and, until the mid 1950s, there was still rationing on some items. Throwing away food was unthinkable, but the meal wouldnt keep, so, with the continued non appearance of her husband, the exasperated wife would feed her husband's meal to the dog. That way, * someone* enjoyed all her hard work, and the meal didn't go to waste .
Nowadays, with fridges / freezers/ microwaves/ telephones and ready meals, and the changes in roles and attitudes , it doesn't really happen any more, although the expression could still be used in a purely figurative sense!
So, back to work Monday! The alarm this morning was *not* welcome! DH is going to the office, and I'm hoping to do some more in the spare room. ( This, of course, is dependent on DH being able to get to the office. If the roads are too bad he will WFH. In which case, I'll make a start on the kitchen instead .) Another indoor day for me, - I really am making progress on the deep cleaning and decluttering, but I do miss spending time outside. Hopefully by Wednesday, the temperature should be warmer then, and still mostly dry, so I'll catch up outside then.

trissie, thanks for the start. This sounds like good mystery week! Miss Marple is one of my favorite mysteries programs on TV. Father Brown is another favorite.
kittykatt, definitely be careful and stay inside if the roads are icy! Those walking cleats are truly very helpful. I have some, but haven't needed to use them this year - and I would have to search to see where they are, since the last time I really needed them was 2 or 3 winters ago. But they sure were wonderful to have when i needed them!
PS, I loved both the snowdrops and the snowflakes/ snowbells. They look like something that would be welcome in the early spring, I wonder if I can find any bulbs around here. They would be something to plant in the late autumn, assuming that they are winter hardy here.
WTG on deep cleaning/ decluttering. You are so diligent in your dailies and weeklies, I don't know how you can have much, but I also know that my mother always seemed to enjoy going through her drawers and straightening them out this time of year.

I got a good start on my K table tonight - thought I was going to work for half hour, ended up adding another 2 hours. I will be recycling much paper: catalogues I didn't order from, requests for $ from a host of charities (Seems the more you give, the more they ask you for, and I think they must share names and addresses as the requestors seem to multiply also!)
But if I am going to get anything done in the morning, I better get to bed pretty soon!

Well, my original thought was amateur sleuths / detectives week (inspired by yesterday's mention of the Murdoch Mysteries), but Agatha Christie would be inspiration enough on her own, wouldn't she?

Peeking in from payroll. Had an early start, despite me not falling asleep till well after 1:30am (my sleep schedule was really messed up after two weeks of no alarms). This is going to be a bit of week from hell, so getting to work early should allow me to leave earlier too (I do abide my 6 hours in office, so if I come in later, I leave later to compensate). There's also a lot of work project to deal with during January on top of at least 3 day-long courses, so I need to make the best use of the time in office.

I hope you survive today with your sanity intact!
Gma, thank you for the compliment! I look on our house as something that changes over time and not a static "museum", so I like to go through everything and check that we're not hoarding "stuff" that is either worn out, or no longer suited to our needs. Otherwise it's too easy to carry on accumulating "stuff" and then getting things out and putting them away becomes difficult. With DH likely to be at home more in the fairly near future when he retires, I want to make life easier for both of us. I do agree with your Mum - a newly tidied drawer really.does."spark joy"!
When I was cleaning out the airing cupboard I came across the warm fleecy blankets that DDeparted Trifle used to love snuggling on in cold weather. But none of the others would go near them, even when they had been washed, so I put them away. With the current cold weather, Ive tried again, and still no one will go near them, not even Matilda, who, of course, never knew Trifle. They're still in good condition, so they're going to be donated. A win - win. They're no longer cluttering up the spring cupboard , and another cat (s) will benefit.
Over here, snowdrops and snowflakes prefer to be planted, and establish more successfull,y "in the green" ie just after they've flowered, and when they still have green leaves. I'm.not sore or that would work for you though, if the group d was a frozen solid!!
Sleep well, Bama! I don't think I'll be going out at all today, as there's nothing I need, and DH will be driving me to Fred's appointment tomorrow.
DH has left for work, and hasn't come back, so I'm assuming the roads are ok. We have blue skies and sun shine, and a very thick frost. When I'm showered and dressed, I'll open all the windows just for a few.minites, to let the fresh air in.

House tasks: Replace the bit of mortar that's fallen out of the edge of the roof (I think its called the verge? Can this wait until we get the house painted when a roof ladder will be in place?) I need for it to stop raining before I ask anyone to come and look!
