The common sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is a species of large annual forb of the daisy family Asteraceae. The common sunflower is harvested for its edible oily seeds, which are often eaten as a snack food. They are also used in the production of cooking oil, as food for livestock, as bird food, and as plantings in domestic gardens for aesthetics. Wild plants are known for their multiple flower heads, whereas the domestic sunflower often possesses a single large flower head atop an unbranched stem.

A common misconception is that flowering sunflower heads track the Sun across the sky. Although immature flower buds exhibit this behaviour, the mature flowering heads point in a fixed (and typically easterly) direction throughout the day.This old misconception was disputed in 1597 by the English botanist John Gerard, who grew sunflowers in his famous herbal garden: "[some] have reported it to turn with the Sun, the which I could never observe, although I have endeavored to find out the truth of it." The uniform alignment of sunflower heads in a field might give some people the false impression that the flowers are tracking the Sun.

Good morning everyone and happy Sunday!

We had a.lovely time last night with DFs C and R. They had also I voted DFs P and I, so we were a group of 6. Plenty of good food and excellent company. Very late to bed, so I'm tired this morning, but planning.on a nap this afternoon. DH pla.s.to stay home.from church and tackle the bottom.of his wardrobe . We will see if that materialises!

Thanks for the sunny sunflower start on Sunday, kittykatt! I'm happy that you had a nice evening with df's. I'm sure there was both good conversation adn good food.
Pretty much my whole day was with the computer doing the 4 hour senior driver's online class. The good thing about it was that I could click pause, get up and move at anytime I wanted to. So I would move, take a break, but it ended up being almost 12 hours.
It has been a REALLY cold, brutally cold, Minnesota winter day. I stayed in the whole day and had absolutely no interest in going outside. I didn't even take in the mail, as that would entail opening the door and letting the 25mph wind blow in the -18C, 0F temperature air. And would require that I step outside long enough to take in the mail. I think it's supposed to be warmer tomorrow - not anywhere near WARM, just not quite as brutal. I'm really glad that I don't have a sweet little dog to put out into this cold weather. When we had Tutsi, I would put a sweater on her, then a fleece lined quilted jacket over that. But I still felt bad for her. She would go really quickly!
During my multiple breaks, I did manage to set up most of my 2026 filing, empty the DW, and load it some. Since it is now after 1 a.m. here, I am not sure that I am going to finish the DW project, as I will need to get up for church in the morning, and clear the driveway first. Which will probably take 1/2 hour, plus getting dressed in all those winter clothes, then taking all those off and putting on church clothes (No I don't wear quilted pink bib overalls to church ). The wind is forecast to be quieter, and the temp might climb to +9, which is still very cold .
I have to start looking for summer clothes to be packing for my trip. The long range forecast is highs mid 70s, even 80. That will sure feel hot compared to here! And wonderful!

Sleep well, Gma! WTG getting that online class completed. Those temperatures sound brutal. It makes me very grateful for my +7 C / 45F temperatures today, even if it is raining. Florida sounds wonderful!

Thank you for the sunny start, Kittykatt. I'll bet that you are tired today, but it was all in a good cause. You deserve some down time with friends. I had a nice phone visit with my db, and I have been playing with my new projector. It's working out exactly as I had hoped. I don't have to plug it in to a device like a computer or tablet. It's connected directly to my wifi. I went into the settings and got CBC TV set up on it. I will search for other stations another time. As a special bonus: it shoots hot air out the back, right where my hand is on the keyboard, so I now have an excellent hand warmer.

I hope that the board is still working when I get up, and that you have a good day in the meantime.

Kittykatt, thanks for the start. I do live watching sunflowers grow in the garden. We sow a few every year now. They are like joyful bright suns... until they start being too heavy with seeds and hang sadly, and then the joy is to watch birds come and feed off the flowers.

Dogged I hope the boards still work to 'see' you later.

Gma lol at the pink overalls ! You really have done great work with your sorting and filing, so glad your tables are staying free of clutter. You surely deserve flower bouquets, maybe not all year round, but maybe on a regular basis ? Or if you sow flowers of your own, you can have your own bouquets

Cloudy day. DS7 is up, no fever anymore. I spent the evening yesterday on the couch resting, probably some tiredness and maybe DS7's bug attacking ? But I felt fine, just tired. Today I feel well and there are many cleaning tasks I have to do, so that's good. I just told MrNG I wanted to finish deChristmassing the LR, and he climbed and took down the two decorations we still had that were close to the ceiling.

DS7 is resting on the couch. I hope the fever doesn't come back.
I took a long time prepping the food for today and for the other meal in advance. Peeling kuri squash is a long work. Some people don't peel it until it's in their plate, some people cook and blend with the skin for soup, some people bake it first and peel it afterwards (how do they manage ? If I do it, it's covered in oil and garlic).
It's just like leek, it's tasty and I love to cook it, but the preparation is long. For the leek, I now use the technique kitkat shared last winter (I think) : I hope to similarly find a solution for my kuri squash question.

Good morning, SHE-ville! The boards were always down yesterday when I tried to post, so I've been MIA and, well, I took it easy/easier. Very tired these days, both physically and emotionally
Today is the big packing day - the twins are leaving for their school ski trip tomorrow, so they need to assemble all their stuff. It gives me excuse to work from home tomorrow, which will be nice, though (I have to drop them off at 8am with all their stuff). It may require another shopping trip this afternoon, but we shall see. For the time being, starting where I am!

Frenchie, will DS7 stay home from school tomorrow?
gma, I think a pink bib coverall would definitely lighten up the mood at church!
kittykatt, I love sunflowers! Every couple years, we will have a sunflower field along the road I take from home, lovely to watch!
