Table tennis is a racket-and-ball sport played between two players or doubles teams, similar to tennis but on a table as its name suggests.

It is thought that upper-class Victorians in England invented table tennis in the 1880s as a genteel, after-dinner alternative to lawn tennis, using whatever they could find as equipment. A line of books would often be the net, the rounded top of a champagne cork would be the ball and occasionally a cigar box lid would be a racket.

In 1926, meetings were held in Berlin and London that led to the formation of the International Table Tennis Federation.

It is estimated there are 40 million competitive table tennis players and countless millions playing recreationally, making it the sport with the most participants worldwide.

Exact scoring rules may differ from tournament to tournament and even round to round within an event, but generally matches are best-of-5- or best-of-7-games. Within each game, the first player to 11 points with a 2-point cushion takes the game. There are also rules regarding what type of paddles are legal.

Table tennis and the Olympics
The first World Championships were held in London in 1926, but the sport had to wait a long time before it was given its Olympic debut at the 1988 Seoul Games. Athletes from the People's Republic of China have dominated the sport, winning 32 of 37 gold medals from 1988 to 2021.

Oh, Trissie, huge apologies! You did start today's thread, and because other people had listed on Tuesday and Wednesday's thread, it had slipped down the screen and didn't show on my small phone screen. Maybe someone can merge the threads, or move my posts to yours?

Already lost a post.

trissie, dh says that the Czech Republic has great ice hockey players! Hope payroll is going well.
Kitty, I now think of table tennis as a solidly Asian sport. Hope you had a good morning at church. Any lunch get togethers afterward?

We got about 4 more inches of snow yesterday, but the temps were quite mild. Right now, it is about 23F with windchill of 11F. And it's rather windy out there. It looks like temps are expected to drop steadily until Saturday morning when they'll be about -8F (-22.2C) - and -16 F with windchill. Then, it will warm up to 13F on Sunday and we'll get 4 inches of snow. Looks like the coldest point will be a windchill of -20F (-28.9C) tomorrow morning. I wonder if schools will be closed?

Dh is out running in the wind and blowing snow. I hope he's warm enough.

Last night, after dinner, AC and I got coffee at a nearby Yemeni coffee shop. There are several in our small city and they're very popular. Then, I tried to pick up Fable to bring her to our house, but she refused to get in my car. She ended up playing and tackling her leash instead. For a long time. I finally called dh to ask for help, and he was able to get her into his car. At home, I brought back the garbage and recycling bins, brought in the mail, and fetched more firewood. I did read more in my book next to a nice warm fire in the fireplace with a cup of hot cinnamon tea, one of the activities I love to do in the winter!

Today, I think I'm going to the gym twice: this morning with dd30 and then at 2 for my weekly work out with AS.
