Re: Fallow Deer Friday
Although introduced by humans, the fallow deer has been here so long that it is considered naturalised. Look out for groups of white-spotted deer in woodland glades.
Scientific name
The fallow deer (Scietici name: Dama dama) is an elegant, medium-sized deer, with a typically spotted coat. Males have broad, palmate antlers. During the autumnal breeding season, known as the 'rut', males make a loud belly belch to proclaim their territory and fight over the females. This display may involve groaning and stylised walking, but often results in dangerous, physical contact as they lock antlers. The resulting fawns are born the following summer.
Fallow deer are fairly widespread in England, Wales, Ireland and southern Scotland. They prefer deciduous or mixed woodland with large clearings, typically living in small herds. They are also common in many deer parks throughout the country. They eat grasses and herbs, and will browse young, broadleaf trees.
The fallow deer is variable in colour, but is mostly pale gingery-brown, with white spots on the back, a characteristic black and white tail and a white rump patch outlined in black. Some animals are darker brown without any spots, and others are very pale, almost white.
Fallow deer are native to Asia and were introduced into the UK by humans. For a long time, it was believed they were brought here by the Normans, but new evidence published in 2024 revealed that they have been here even longer. They were first introduced by the Romans, but this population only appeared to survive for a few hundred years. They were then reintroduced just before the Norman Conquest, around the year 1,000. They subsequently escaped from deer parks and were intentionally released into hunting forests. Today, they are widespread and the most common deer in England.

Re: Fallow Deer Friday
Good morning, everyone, and happy Friday!
L.Ann, I find a dishwasher very useful, even though there's only two of us (and three cats
!), and as Dogged so correctly.states, it's a very useful cupboard to hide dirty dishes, and immediately makes the kitchen look cleaner and more organised!
Hoping today's treatment.goes well.
KitKat, I like to get the outside of the house painted every 4 or 5 years, so it keeps looking nice and well maintained. (And makes the painting a much easier job for whoever take it on!). But I really wanted to get the roof issues sorted out first (it's mostly the garage roof that needs work, just a little job with the gutters on the house) as I had no idea how much it was going to cost. The house painting *could* wait another year if necessary, but now, hopefully , it won't have to!
WTG with the laundry, Dogged!
Gma, you're a very good friend. I'm sorry the news wasn't better for her, but she is very fortunate to have you to advocate for her.
Today I have a free Friday,.and I need to make the most of it..It's raining (a report said yesterday that here in the SW we've had rain every day this year, and I can well believe it. I need to remind myself to be grateful it isn't snow or ice!) so no outdoor distractions for me today. Instead I want to work on the kitchen, and in between kitchen jobs do some simple admin tasks. Top of the list, message the painter who I would like to paint the outside of the house this year. I know he has a huge backlog die to the wet weather before Christmas, but If I can just get "in the system" then we'll hopefully get it done this summer /early autumn. (Possibly.before then, if he considers it to be a "nice little job"!) Also I need to update the kitchen calendar, as I have several kitty appointments to add, and DF PM has very kindly offered to give me a lift to our church's Ash Wednesday service (DH will have the car that day). DH is WFH today, so I'm sure there will be interruptions, but nothing I can't manage!

Re: Fallow Deer Friday
Good morning Kittykatt! Thanks for another start. I have never heard the term "fallow deer"... Sounds like Bambi (from the description)
Your house must look lovely with all the proper maintenance you do!
Friday:
Olympics is about to start! It's snowing outside. It's not terribly cold, I was just out there with pup, but, this weekend will be another crazy cold one.
Starting tonight, windchill is expected to be -22F (!)
Today, I have to drive my two older DGkids to school and pick up my youngest one from school this afternoon.
Everything else will be worked around those outings.
So:
D2S
feed pup
meds/suppl
Drive to girls:) BIAB

Re: Fallow Deer Friday
Good morning, KitKat! Your weather sounds cold - we're +10C this morning, despite the rain. Thank you for the compliment.
I like to try and keep on top of things where outdoor house maintenance is concerned (and anything to do with water or electricity inside!!!) so hopefully we won't end up with an enormous job on our hands (and hopefully we'll avoid really eye watering bills). And, I'm also going to admit I like the house to look nice and well kept when I walk up the path. It gives me a mental lift.
I've finally finished the tall cupboard.
DH has been complaining about the mess whenever he's come into the kitchen to make coffee (I will confess the cupboard is rather like the TARDIS -bigger on the inside
) but I've just kept going, and now everything I'm going to keep is back inside, I have a bag for donations, a bag for recycling and a bag for genuine rubbish. The rain has stopped for now, so I'm going to try and take the last two bags down to the wheelie bins, which will free up more space in the kitchen.
This afternoon I really need to clean the oven. I also ought to wax the kitchen floor, once DH is safely upstairs again after lunch, and cleaning out the junk drawer would be a bonus (that can be done any time).

Re: Fallow Deer Friday
LOL @ your TARDIS cupboard, Kitty! You're getting so much done in your kitchen! The fallow deer are pretty. Whitetail deer are the dominant species here where we live. We see small groups of them regularly, several times a week. Yesterday, we saw what we think was a mother and 2 smaller/ younger ones.
kitkat, sorry you're going back to the very cold windchills. Our weather this weekend is cold - but not unusually so, windchill down to -8*F. There's not much wind here because of the trees -- maybe that helps us. Enjoy the grands!
Good morning L Ann! Did you walk inside or outside? I hope the radiation goes smoothly with few or no side effects.
Today is the first day this week without 2+ meetings or appointments! The only thing on my calendar is the dinner party tonight.
I'm going to bring a salad, so I need to get fresh ingredients to put that together. Other todos - just continue the same list I've been posting for days, even weeks: NY cards, writing, decluttering, taking care of that check for my mom, exercise - gym with the girls? Or maybe a jog outside since it will be above freezing this afternoon.
Although, it is snowing now but I'm not sure how much accumulation we'll get.
Next:
- some qt
- back exercises
- make bed
Later:
- reclaim kitchen
- figure out if I'm going to the gym or not
- NY cards ready for the mail
- progress on more NY cards
- payroll: S2 prep - CO ISL, Vocab lists for IR and ISL
- update time sheet
- Exercise: gym with the girls? OR jog outside?
- s2s and self care
- squeegee and wipe down shower
- lunch
- writing time, maybe in coffee shop?
- WF - salad items
- make a salad
- finish folding and putting away laundry
- remote deposit of that check for dmom
- decluttering 15 minutes
- 5:15 otd to dinner
- duolingo
- update health apps
- reading time
TaDas!
- up; weighed self
- messaged girls - are they going to the gym? (I might go jog outside this afternoon since temps will be mild!)
- messages with EP; the classical audition for her ds L went very well -- not surprised! The jazz auditions are today.
- coffee
- email deletions + weather website
