Re: Niccolò Machiavelli Monday @ TDD - C&C
Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli (3 May 1469 – 21 June 1527) was a Florentine diplomat, author, philosopher, and historian who lived during the Italian Renaissance. He is best known for his political treatise The Prince (Il Principe), written around 1513 but not published until 1532, five years after his death. He has often been called the father of modern political philosophy and political science.
For many years he served as a senior official in the Florentine Republic with responsibilities in diplomatic and military affairs. He wrote comedies, carnival songs, and poetry. His personal correspondence is also important to historians and scholars of Italian correspondence. He worked as secretary to the second chancery of the Republic of Florence from 1498 to 1512, when the Medici were out of power.
After his death Machiavelli's name came to evoke unscrupulous acts of the sort he advised most famously in his work, The Prince. He concerned himself with the ways a ruler could succeed in politics, and believed those who flourished engaged in deception, treachery, and violence. He advised rulers to engage in evil when political necessity requires it, at one point stating that successful founders and reformers of governments should be excused for killing other leaders who would oppose them. Machiavelli's Prince has been surrounded by controversy since it was published. Some consider it to be a straightforward description of political reality. Many view The Prince as a manual, teaching would-be tyrants how they should seize and maintain power. Even into recent times, scholars such as Leo Strauss have restated the traditional opinion that Machiavelli was a "teacher of evil".
Even though Machiavelli has become most famous for his work on principalities, scholars also give attention to the exhortations in his other works of political philosophy. The Discourses on Livy (composed c. 1517) has been said to have paved the way for modern republicanism. His works were a major influence on Enlightenment authors who revived interest in classical republicanism, such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau and James Harrington. Machiavelli's philosophical contributions have influenced generations of academics and politicians, with many of them debating the nature of his ideas.

Good morning, trissie. Thank you for the enlightening start to our day!
I've had two days in a row where I was able to get both of Germane's pills into her, so I am pretty happy.
See you all later.

Since the Greeks considered cultivation of the mind and spirit as important as cultivation of the body, it's philosophers week for the Olympics!
I decided to stay home today. I probably could go to the office, but why spread my viruses and look like an idiot in public if I have teams and VPN to access the entire network and not a single meeting today? Also, this way I can take a proper power nap in my break should I need it instead of falling half asleep staring at the computer
Dogged, getting pets to eat their pills is an achievement every time!

Re: Niccolò Machiavelli Monday @ TDD - C&C
Good morning, Trissie, and thank you for an interesting start! How very wise to WFH today.
Sleep well, Dogged, and a big WTG for getting both of Germane's in pills into her. From my experiences with the cats, that is a big achievement!
I never made it back yesterday. My trusty enamel roaster sprung a leak ( I ve.only had it 30? years. .My previous one I inherited from my grandmother, so they definitely don't.make things like they used to! However, I got everything cleaned up, and enough chicken juices rescued to make at least some gravy., and I've sourced a replacement from John Lewis. This one has a guarantee for 10 years, so hopefully it will last for longer. (I just need to keep the receipt).
And we had a brief respite from the rain, so I even managed to do something in my very soggy back garden. It was good to be outside and in the fresh air.
DH is going to the office today. I really hope he hears about his early retirement soon (they're supposed to hear mid / end of February, so potentially any day now) as he's sooo tired and grumpy ATM. I totally understand the stress of all the uncertainty, but it's becoming very hard to live with!
The non stop rain isnt helping either. I'm just continuing with my various projects, and now the spring cleaning marathon is very nearly finished (just the junk drawer in the kitchen to do now!) reacquainting myself with my dolls house project that I started last year. Yesterday I also worked on the photos for 30 minutes, so a little progress there, too.
So, today I need to tackle the housework, and also make time to do some little fun things for me. The long term forecast.for the next few weeks is for yet more rain , but, on the positive side there is only a very low chance of snow and ice, so something to be really thankful.for.

Re: Niccolò Machiavelli Monday @ TDD - C&C
DH has been safely launched, and I've dealt with a frantic phone call from DF CW (a Man was coming to fix the integrated door on her washing machine, he hadn't turned up and she had to leave for work. Fortunately, as she was talking, he turned up) , several texts from DH asking if I can look for things he's mislaid when I clean, and a text from my podiatrist confirming my appointment. And I've managed to order the new roaster from John Lewis. It may or may not arrive by Sunday , but that's no ok, I can always use my le Creuset casserole and make a pot roast instead.
The rain has held off long enough for me to get outside and feed my pots. I'm sure anyone who's watching must think I'm the crazy lady standing there with a watering can when we've had so much rain.
But things are starting to come back to life again now, and are going to need a little help.
I'm going to see if I can have my coffee in my front garden without being rained on. That will be a first for this year!

Re: Niccolò Machiavelli Monday @ TDD - C&C
Good morning and thanks for yet another educational start, trissie!
I was reading your post yesterday, how you researched in your younger years, then, Dogged's post about Encyclopaedias.... I could relate.
I created notebooks on various topics that I thoroughly researched, first, through a (mini) Encyclopaedia, dictionaries, then, through library books. When the internet became widespread, I used to joke that Google was invented for me:)
You must have put that roaster to lots of good use, Kittykatt
Monday - my favourite day of the week.
A fresh start - possibilities
I have already started yesterday : emptied my junk drawer and began the elimination/reorganization process. Hence my island is currently covered in "stuff". (Didn't FL say not to pull things out that you can't put away within an hour ? Or something like that?)
Anyhow, now, I have a call with a friend, will attend to the stuff After:)

Re: Niccolò Machiavelli Monday @ TDD - C&C
kitkat, internet brought a lot of fun to my life - but truth to be told, I found many good authors because their books with interesting names were next to the one I was actually looking for in the library!
Amazing that you can already consider having coffee in your garden, kittykatt, I'd definitely not be able to do it yet!
Done with work and some calls after. There is a problem with the inheritance from my grandmother who passed last fall because my late father somehow fell through the cracks of the system when Czechoslovakia became two countries and is not in the citizens database. It's very typical of him to cause problems even 17 years after his death! But it was kid of a bombshell, I actually for a moment doubted my own citizenship status, but luckily I was able to inherit citizenship from my mother (legal talks that nobody can really get because I don't really get it and I am a lawyer here). Anyway I AM in the system and I have been in voter lists and I have state ID so I think I am safe
