trissie, it's interesting to me that there are 2 languages in your area. When it was Czechoslovakia, were both used? And did children have to learn both?

Czech and Slovak are extremely close. Imagine something just a little bit more extreme than differences between New York and Creole English Differences lie in spelling, specific vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation, with Czech often perceived as "harder" and Slovak as "softer", but people my generation and older have no problem understanding somebody talking in Slovak, even if our Slovak would not be gramatically correct. Mine would actually be pretty good, given how much reading in Slovak I did

Czech was the official language in Czechia and Slovak was the official language in Slovakia. So depending on where you went to school, that's what you'd learn and be tested in up till high school graduation. In university, both were accepted (of course, unless you studied something language-specific). Actually at least in Czech Republic, your final thesis can still be submitted in Slovak if you are a Slovakian studying here!

At work and in politics, people just spoke their original language. My grandparents never learned Czech, eventhough they had not lived in Slovakia since 1960s. Even now, a lot of Slovakians who moved here don't even try to learn Czech, though that's a bit frowned upon - like, if you studied here and work here and your kids are born here, you could try, right?

Also, before the split, TV was dubbed either in Czech or in Slovakian, depending on which national TV broadcasted it first, and a second dubbing would not be made even if it was then broadcasted in the other part. And if you lived close to the border, you'd have your selection of both Czech and Slovak TV - I remember the Slovakian TV ran the 10 minute evening children's story at 6:40 and Czech TV at 6:50 so at grandma's, I'd watch both!

Wrote a bit of wall of text, but really, we rarely think of Slovak as a "foreign language".

Good question about the Czechoslovakian languages. The things I learn here that have nothing to do with cleaning keep me going!

I’ve been dealing w dd and the insurance adjuster. No problems. He seems very nice, has a daughter in the same university and says he will treat dd like his own. Don’t worry about rental, it’s covered. Her car is totaled and he will look at car lots to get the best possible price he can, not just basing worth on the Kelly blue book value. I guess that’s good. Her car is 10 years old but had low mileage and would have lasted many more years so this is a hard hit but we shall do what we can to get her a new to her vehicle. Looks like dad to the rescue. I’m in dire need of a new vehicle which I keep putting off bc I don’t go out much, have other things to do with our money, but here we are. It is what it is, and all of those philosophical quotes that don’t really help. Mentally working through it. I have to find her title too, mom got it for her and put me on the title so there would be no problems when she passed, thank goodness. Now what did I do with it?

That's very very interesting, trissie. You seem very adept with foreign languages, so I'm not surprised your Slovak is good. Do kids in the Czech Republic also work with Slovak in schools?

I refilled the bird feeder around 3 pm yesterday. It was empty by 3 pm today. These birds are hungry. Or we've just usurped their natural habits of foraging for food in the winter. Wild birds have survived the winter here for years before there were any bird feeders. . .

I have sat here and done things not on my list.

Hello, everyone!

Just a quick CI as I want to get to bed at a reasonable time. To all those who were wondering, yes, I did have my coffee in my garden today. We reached 10C and it actually wasn't raining, so I wanted to celebrate. I didn't sit down for very long, but coffee is a good accompaniment to weeding.

Dogged, yes, the dolls house is a fun project for me. I actually have two - my childhood dolls house from 1969/70, which is a Triang and in pretty good shape, I'm just adding a few things to that - and my restoration project from the 1950s (I've narrowed it down to around 1955) of an unknown make, possibly home built, which is a work in progress.

The rain has returned with a vengeance. Recently, the met office was asked when the rain would stop. (A reasonable question, IMHO, as it has rained every day this year so far.) The reply: "We dunno." And this from a multi million pound company with two new much vaunted super computers and supposedly a world wide reputation!!!!! I think I need to drive to the seaside and bring home a piece of seaweed to act as my weather forecaster.
