Thales of Miletus (c. 626/623 – c. 548/545 BC) was an Ancient Greek pre-Socratic philosopher from Miletus in Ionia, Asia Minor. Thales was one of the Seven Sages, founding figures of Ancient Greece.

Beginning in eighteenth-century historiography, many came to regard him as the first philosopher in the Greek tradition, breaking from the prior use of mythology to explain the world and instead using natural philosophy. He is thus otherwise referred to as the first to have engaged in mathematics, science, and deductive reasoning.

Thales's view that all of nature is based on the existence of a single ultimate substance, which he theorized to be water, was widely influential among the philosophers of his time. Thales thought the Earth floated on water.

In mathematics, Thales is the namesake of Thales's theorem, and the intercept theorem can also be referred to as Thales's theorem. Thales was said to have calculated the heights of the pyramids and the distance of ships from the shore. In science, Thales was an astronomer who reportedly predicted the weather and a solar eclipse. The discovery of the position of the constellation Ursa Major is also attributed to Thales, as well as the timings of the solstices and equinoxes. He was also an engineer, known for having allowed the Lydian army to cross the Halys River. Plutarch wrote that "at that time, Thales alone had raised philosophy from mere speculation to practice."

Good morning Trissie and thank you for another interesting start.

Gma and Dogged, I'm guessing it must be bedtime for both of you? Sleep well.

Going to keep this short, as I need to be showered and dressed before 8am when the health centre opens. Freddie bit me on Sunday, and despite me treating it at home it's looking angry today. I know the drill (fill in online form and request 2 different antibiotics as I can't have penicillin due to severe allergy. This is the new health centre, so I need to make that last point clear. It's all over my notes, but I never assume people have actually read them!) And I need to ensure my probiotics are still in date and maybe order some more. Just what I didn't need today, but these things happen. At least it's only a short walk down the hill to the new health centre , so I dont have to worry about parking.

helia, you asked yesterday if kids have to work with Slovak texts at school - I don't think so, but are bound to have at least one Slovak-speaking kid at their class, so there's that. Those kids usually start speaking Slovak when the first enter into the educational system, but quickly catch up on Czech. Nowadays, there's also high likelihood of an Ukrainian kid at class too, but unlike Slovak, Ukrainian would be harder for them to understand. We just speak so many languages in Europe!

Trissie, I find it fascinating how Slovak and Czech exist side by side, close enough to be mutually understood, but still distinct languages.

I'm waiting for a call back from the health centre. It appears that animal bites are now upgraded to "red alert" status according to the NHS, as the online form would only let me go so far, and then it turned red and told me to ring the health centre today. Curiously, it doesn't distinguish between different types of animal bites (we don't have rabies, so that's not a concern). This was a bit of a surprise, as I'm used to just describing what happened and requesting the relevant antibiotics in the relevant box and attaching a photo. (Can you tell I'm an old hand at this? )

So I rang, and I only had to hold for a few minutes. Interestingly, once I had told the receptionist that yes, Freddie had broken the skin., (a sensible question to ask, of course,) and it was just the one puncture.wound from one fang, but it's looking a bit angry today, she immediately sent me a link to complete and attach a photo for the triage team, and said someone from the triage team would call me back today. I've done the drill so many times now, but it's still interesting to see how people's attitudes immediately change the moment I mention "cat bite" and "puncture wound" in the same sentence!!!

I'm not sure if it's actually raining yet. (I really must get a piece of seaweed to hang up outside! ) So maybe a little time in my front garden and then start some housework .

Update: lovely doctor rang me back, we had a long chat about Freddie - she has an angry cat too, so she will ask her vet if he can go onto fluoxetine like Freddie!!! End result, antibiotics for me as I suspected, also draw round the red patch to check it's.not growing, and tetanus booster booked for Monday afternoon (my last booster was back in the 1990s, when I was told that would be the last one I would need, but apparently guidelines have changed since then ! )

Kittykatt - hope antibiotics do their job quickly! Cat bites are nasty! I did have an angry cat... He got upset about our dog (back then) and directed his anger at my calf.

I'm up after a loong sleep.
Very proud of that (large/two-level) junk drawer. Need to continue the other hot spots but today will be interrupted.
After I take pup, I have to go with DH for his appt. Keep laundry going and prep some food until pick up time. Hope to get my rooted pothos planted today and water all the plants. Then, gym.

Thankfully, it's not cold outside! Or, rather, it will be OK today with a high of 34F, (Right now, windchill is 14F)
So: starting morning routine now.

Glad you got a long sleep, kitkat. We are much warmer today with a high of 45F forecast. It is sunny too!
I know trissie! I know. I think early exposure to multiple languages is really good for the mind as well as socio-cultural understanding. Dh grew up speaking a dialect of Dutch, which I didn't know about until recently, that is similar to German since his hometown Enschede is 15 miles from the German border. He was required to study German, English, and French (and Dutch) in school. I wish there were more languages here. We had no official language until last year, though everyone knows English is the required de facto language. Some places do have signs in English and Spanish, and Spanish was part of the curriculum beginning in K when we lived in Austin, TX.

Last night, dh and I looked at calendars together for travel dates. We booked a chalet in Switzerland for a couple days before the family (dh's family - a group of 20 of us) hut tour to help me acclimate to the altitude. We have tentative dates for our trip to Austin; I've confirmed with the Ks and checked with AC at payroll. KY is checking with S, her dh, to see if that works for them. And then I made sure I have the Porcupine Moutain backpacking and CG1 camping trips on my calendar. Dh wants to travel to France and Spain after the hut tour, so we still need to arrange that. It will be around the time of the eclipse, so I wonder if places will be booked.

Today, it is so warm and the sun is shining! I went to bed late last night (12:30) so I slept until 8:15 this morning. Clearly, I'm not going to WW. (I need to leave at 8:15 to make it on time.) K, S2, J, and I are meeting at a coffee shop at 10:30. I have a payroll Prof Dev meeting 1-2 pm. Then, I'd like to go for a jog - outside. SO happy to be able to do that! Other things to do: finish NY cards, writing, spiff the house for the dinner guests tonight, make a trip to WF for those items that Kroger couldn't deliver. Maybe progress on setting up Telegram and my syllabus for payroll. I might stop by to pick up my book. Then, we're hosting a dinner crew of 6? from 6:30 - 8:30 ish? Dd30 is cooking for us! Oh, and we're also puppy sitting tonight, so we'll have Fable here as well.
