I read a suggestion to put a large piece of cardboard or plastic or something under the bird feeder, and pull it up when the snow stops falling. That gives obligate ground feeders a better surface to find their seeds on the ground. They are less successful at digging the seeds out of the snow. Just like squirrels run around planting forests for future generations, the birds on the feeder are feeding the ground feeders.helia, I am impressed that you can exercise first and then go on the grocery quest.
