Re: Francis Bacon Friday
Francis Bacon (1561–1626) was one of the most important philosophers of the early modern period. He was a truly protean figure—a lawyer by training and profession who advocated law reform for over thirty years; a politician and statesman who sat in parliament from the age of twenty until the age of sixty; a popular essayist and historian whose Essays were printed more than twenty times and The Historie of the Raigne of King Henrie the Seuenth (1622) at least six times in the seventeenth century.
But before everything else, Bacon was a philosopher who had a profound impact on the subsequent development of philosophy. The main endeavor of his philosophical pursuits was creating a colossal program for renewing all knowledge, especially natural philosophy. Bacon called this program “Instauratio magna” (“Great Instauration”). It included a completely new aim for natural philosophy and sciences. All knowledge, rather than being only speculative and contemplative, should also be operative and beneficial to humankind.
Bacon is remembered for insisting that human knowledge and power are closely connected. Another central aspect of his program for renewing all learning and knowledge was the creation of a new organon or method, often called eliminative induction, for studying nature. Bacon allocated an important role in this new organon to natural history, and his understanding of natural history, its content and role, was novel. His program also included the idea that knowledge and learning should be an institutional effort, that learning could only be advanced by collaboration.

Re: Francis Bacon Friday
Good morning everyone and happy Friday!
Gma and.L.Anm, thank you for your kind, supportive words. It's going to be a new chapter for both of us
Helia, I hope your DF R is on the mend soon -that sounds scary! But how sensible of J to ring you when there was something wrong.
Bama, plastic flowers definitely have their place , especially in tricky situations where not much else would grow satisfactorily.
Dogged I'm very fond of duck! We don't have it very often, as it doesn't go so far as chicken, bit I've got a very nice recipe involving wholegrain mustard, honey and rock salt.
Today, MJ is coming to work on the kitchen cupboard..(I'm hoping he will finish today, as I would really like a fully functioning kitchen again, but that might be too ambitious, as there's a lot of carpentry involved . We'll see how he gets on, and it's not the end of the world if it goes on into next week.)

Re: Francis Bacon Friday
Mmmmm.... Bacon....
Thank you for starting us off, Kittykatt, and for our morning edification. I am just winding down. I had checked the duck and found that it was cooked, so I lifted it out of the slow cooker and got it into the fridge, I cut up all of the carrots and potatoes that I could get my hands on, and put them in the duck broth to cook overnight.
I don't often see duck in the stores here, Kittykatt, but that might just be because I wasn't looking. I like duck well enough, as I prefer dark meat. But I couldn't add any seasoning, as this one is for Germane.
Germane has had a helping of duck meat, and was very enthusiastic about this change to her diet. She can't eat only homemade food, as I could be missing vitamins or minerals, but it makes a nice supplement and has made her happy. And it wasn't expensive, either. The duck was $12, which felt like a lot for dog food, but her dog food is up to almost $6 a can. There's more than two cans worth of food in the slow cooker, so I think that it has worked out to be economical.
With peace reigning in the Dogged household, I'm off to bed. See you later.

Re: Francis Bacon Friday
Good morning Kittykatt! Thanks for the start ! I hope your cupboards get finished up to your expectations.
Dogged Dog food is VERY expensive. Are you familiar with the site 'Balance It'? (I may have mentioned it in the past) It generates recipes - and recommends supplements. Germane is a very lucky little dog:)
I ran out of time last night - never got back here. Fresh start today.
It's VERY cold out: - 20 C with the windchill. My outdoor plans will have to wait.
My DGD is supposed to arrive soon, probably for half the day.
DDog looks like she needs eye drops again... I will try to manage it. I have a whole tube of ointment for her.
No gym today. DD is taking care of dinner.
Let me see how much progress I can make.
Will start with MR
then (likely) breakfast for DGD
there is laundry waiting
anothe list of DPCs
calendar to update
random shopping list
bags of donations to take to car/drop off

Re: Francis Bacon Friday
I'm not sure I've ever seen duck in a grocery store either, Doggedly. Or maybe it's because I've never really looked? I've eaten duck at Chinese restaurants where it is very tasty and very expensive.
Yay for progress today on the kitchen cupboard project, Kitty.
That's super cold, kitkat. It's 13F here, but no wind.
Thank you for your kind thoughts for friend R. Dh and I came home around 9:15 last night to eat something. R's MRI was scheduled for 10:45 pm. He thought he'd be discharged around midnight - 1 a.m. Since M stays up until 2 a.m. regularly (new info for us!), she volunteered to be on call to pick him up. Both dh and I slept with our phones next to our beds in case. No texts or calls or anything this morning. I messaged our group thread (us, the girls, the Cs, and M) to see if R got home last night - but no response yet. M is sleeping and hopefully R is too.
There was some concern about a possible mini TIA, maybe especially since all of R's grandparents died from stroke.
This morning, it is 13*F and sunny!! Temps are headed to 39*F.
And best of all - it's Friday. I am meeting friend MM for coffee - in 1 hour. At 2, I'm working out with AS. Payroll-wise, I need to check teachers' syllabi today. I might stop by payroll to check on the final exams - we shall see. . . And there are all the other things on the regular list too. Dh and I will go out to eat tonight, low-cal Asian. Of course, everything will change if R is still in the hospital.

Re: Francis Bacon Friday
Morning all. Oh my goodness I hope R is ok. J was very smart to notice and call for help. Scary stuff. I hope everyone is getting a good night.
I hope your cabinets will turn out how you like them kittykat. And wonderful news on the retirement front.
I have never had duck either. Well now I think of it maybe I just don't remember. Dh family had them on the farm. Maybe she cooked one up while we lived up there? They ate them once in a while. Even turkey wasn't an only Christmas meal. Dh dad still tells the story of when the kids were all small. Their house was the biggest for the family gatherings and the grandparents had planned a meal. And forgot to tell the host household? Till morning... they took a frozen turkey out and stuffed it in the oven and it was ready on time.. juices and all cause it was frozen I guess. He tells that story every time we have turkey dinner
.
Anyway I am hoping I feel better today. Yesterday was ok at work cause I was living on sinus meds. I don't know what this is. It doesn't feel like a cold anymore. My eyes are visibly puffy and watery. Pain in the face. I feel it a little in my chest. But there's nothing much to blow out. I tried a sinus rinse last night and it felt really weird and didn't do much. Getting in to a dr in this place well.. means a trip to er. And the good dr might still be here. I think. I feel ok when I take stuff but I don't want to mask it all. I have not been up to see mom for almost a week. And dad must know I'm not feeling well and been calling my sister. That's good at least.
My house is well just needs a pick up put away... odds and ends everywhere. I am deciding I think I will still go to work at 8. Means I'm done earlier. Take some meds.. shower.. pupa everywhere.
Oh and I honestly might have 5or 6 rows left on my blanket. Almost done..

Re: Francis Bacon Friday
kittykatt, yay for your DH's bid for retirement being accepted! You're heading towards a new chapter of your life!
Good night, Dogged! Re bacon, I have a little joke for ya! 25 years ago we had johnny cash, bob hope and steve jobs. Today we have no cash, no hope and no jobs. God, please don't let kevin bacon die!
helia, hoping by now you have better news about your DF!
sorry you are feeling sick, lauralind, the colds this season are vicious! sinus meds are my constant companion since Monday too
kitkat, the cool thing is we can get a fresh start every day!
So, Friday, we meet again! This has been sitting unposted for so long that over half of Friday is already gone, but the sentiment remains
And even better is that I meet the weekend again!
Made good progress so far, but even more progress can be done before dinnertime, so off I go!
