Power of Doing Little Things Sunday

Post by Twins' Mom »

Here is wisdom blessed brought for a Sunday topic earlier this year:
Little routines keep us moving forward
little exercises keep us flexible
taking time to read a little, learn something new keeps our brain engaged.
starting with a first stitch can lead to an outfit being made or a quilt being finished.
one stroke of paint lead to beautiful artwork.

We don't need to do a big project - big projects are just a series of little steps.

How about today - how can you keep things simple and joyful without pressing yourself to "do it all"

Making small steps forward leads to big adventures -
Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every new year find you a better [wo]man. Ben Franklin

oh, suddenly inspired to work on the cardfile and write some doable goals with small steps to get there. 3 by 5s that are blank without lines lend themselves to plan variety.

... .. keep our brain engaged. I've been practicing some question-answering lately. A fellow who asks questions of "the person in the street" with mic and a camera guy inspired me to be able to recite some countries, some capitals (not good at that one), some math, that sort of thing. "Name 3 countries that... .." etc.

Missing several of us this weekend. Lots of interesting stories to hear later, I bet! :)

Today's brunch is a skillet that will include some lovely Lion's Mane mushrooms we found at the nice grocery.
And then morning service
This afternoon there is laundry, some dusting. Decluttering has a plan.
And then I have 4 seams to sew in a really sweet fabric that makes me smile.

For the past few days I have been writing all the stuff I NEED to get done this week. Talk about overwhelming!!

Even last night I was thinking about all the "regular" stuff I have to catch up on.

Laundry is now in the dryer after it sat for more than 24 hours in the washing machine. I ran it through a rinse and spin cycle before I moved it.
There is a sink full of dirty dishes and a pile of pots/pans and bowls that need to be washed.
While dh was sleeping earlier I swept the bedroom and living room and hall way because I need to mop.
The first litter box got deep cleaned this morning, only two more to do.
Bathroom garbage has been changed because it was overflowing.

I need to order and pick up some regular insulin for dh today.

The volume is down on the TV. I really want to go back to bed. Dh is still sleeping.. (which is the only reason I turned down the volume)

It's snowing out and the temperature is going to go up, so no need to shovel outside or even sweep. There is just enough to make it look pretty but far from being dangerous at all. Less than 1/4 inch.
Dishes never stop.
Laundry never stops.
Litter boxes never stop.
Paper never stops.

Good morning

My whole life is accomplished by doing little things. If I try to do big things then I get overwhelmed, get sidetracked, and procrastinate. Little things are easy and i don't resist doing them.

DS17 is working on a one day project to remove tin from a building. He woke himself at 6am and was eager to get OTD to get started. He didn't get home until late last night after spending several hours helping a friend with a project. I am used to his high energy level, but really.....some time I wonder how does he do it? >>>shrugging shoulders<<<< Don't know. I just know he enjoys being busy and is loving life.

I've got a plan for things to cook to add dishes to the ready-to-eat buffet tub in the refrigerator.
** Pasta salad
** Ground beef with a sauce
** Chicken sauteed in butter & bbq
** Green salad and fixings
I try to pay attention to what the family eats and makes sure those type dishes are available. Maybe more importantly...pay attention to what they won't eat and don't repeat those.

Did you know that March begins one week from today, and the time changes to Daylight savings in two weeks? Wow, I hadn't been keeping up my calendar in my planner that I do several weeks out, and now I'm catching up.

I'm trying to figure out my trip to Richmond VA and Washington DC end of March. The "main event" is Virginia research at the Library of Virginia, but I'd like to get into DC to go to the DAR library and revisit some research there. I can research at LVA Tuesday - Saturday but might want to sacrifice one or more of those days to get to DC. Both libraries are closed on Sunday. And I could drive to DC from Richmond or take Amtrack, which I think would be cool.

Our weather has turned colder again - not Cathy/Canada cold - it's currently 39 and breezy, high only 40 today, down to mid-twenties overnight.

I'm not sure when dh will be home today. I only know he is bowling at some point and will be home after that. He's about 1.5 hours away.

We didn't attend church this morning because DH isn't feeling well. Hopefully his headache is from allergies and not a symptom of something else.

I've been playing in the garden. I almost waited too late in the season to redesign the supports in the aspargus bed. I have been thinking about the changes I wanted to make and basically knew the design I wanted to use. However, I have waiting on the asparagus ferns to completely turn brown before I removed last year stalks and burn them. There is a short window of time between last year stalk removal and the asparagus spears starting to grow. That window is closing fast because I have been harvesting asparagus spears for several days. I have one more panel to put into place and then I think it will be ready for this year. The raised bed is 2' tall then the asparagus ferns are over 6' tall so I'm trying to contain & support a 8' tall growing plants. This is the type of "problems" that I love to have.

I learned something new to me. We have two colors of daffodils blooming. One is jonquils. All jonquils are daffodils, but not all daffodils are jonquils.

I've gone and done all the errands for the day. It's so nice out! Snow completely melted and it's 4 Celcius. There were people wearing shorts! (Teenage boys)

Insulin and groceries are all away already. I need to turn on the dryer to do a wrinkle free load.

Cats have had their nip for the week.

Something I miss so much from the other house this time of year are my little white jonquil variety by the back door there. Much smaller, more delicate than the large bold daffodils, also lovely. I think they are still there - almost scared to find out. I once wrote a story for a SS publication (that was fiction), because it impressed me to see my great-great-grandmother's daffodils still blooming beside the remains of her home when only the chimney still marked the location. The bulbs I've planted over the decades are the main reason I've always hated Round Up - the spraying of that stuff around house foundations in an overzealous quest for neatness would lose sweet little spring bulbs, plus make it foolish to consider planting vegetables too close to the house.

Wordsworth called daffodils a wealth for his heart.

Here, blessed, I've learned from you, poetic benefit:

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
