Philip Edward Thomas (3 March 1878 – 9 April 1917) was a British writer of English poetry and prose. He is sometimes considered a war poet, although few of his poems deal directly with his war experiences. He only started writing poetry at the age of 36, but by that time he had already been a prolific critic, biographer, nature writer and travel writer for two decades. In 1915, he enlisted in the British Army to fight in the First World War and was killed in action during the Battle of Arras in 1917, soon after he arrived in France

Thomas's poems are written in a colloquial style and frequently feature the English countryside. The short poem In Memoriam exemplifies how his poetry blends the themes of war and the countryside. On 11 November 1985, Thomas was among 16 Great War poets commemorated on a slate stone unveiled in Westminster Abbey's Poet's Corner. The inscription, written by fellow poet Wilfred Owen, reads: "My subject is War, and the pity of War. The Poetry is in the pity.

Thomas was described by British Poet Laureate Ted Hughes as "the father of us all." Poet Laureate Andrew Motion has said that Thomas occupies "a crucial place in the development of twentieth-century poetry" for introducing a modern sensibility, later found in the work of such poets as W. H. Auden and Ted Hughes, to the poetic subjects of Victorian and Georgian poetry.

At least nineteen of his poems were set to music by the Gloucester composer Ivor Gurney.

Good morning / good night Bama! Yes, I did get the jab, as the measles outbreak in London is growing, and the medical profession is concerned. (The government is more concerned about a naughty former ambassador and an even naughtier former prince and how their actions might reflect on them, to be concerned about such mundane issues as an outbreak of a highly infectious illness. ) We can't find any evidence that I've had the old measles jab, although the nurse I saw yesterday thought I probably had had it as I never had measles and.neitjer did any of my classmates at primary school. It's possible, of course, to take blood and test for antibodies, but it's just quicker and easier to have the jab. And, one of my friends is severely immunosuppressed, and she can't have the jab, so it's important to protect people Iike her. Today when I woke up I had come out in a rash overnight - I'm guessing a side effect from the jab, as I haven't eaten anything or done anything else out of the ordinary. Apparently this isn't supposed to happen for 6 days, but my body evidently hasn't red the manual! It's not painful or itchy, and I feel fine otherwise, so I'll just keep an eye on it.

Helia, your jog sounded lovely with all the bird life. I'm sorry you didn't get to see baby I this time.

Trissie, your French songs were much more advanced that the ones we learnt. We did the old classics like "Sur le pont D'Avignon" but one year we had a younger French mistress who taught us something completely different, that I have never been able to find since, even on the internet. From memory it went something like this:
Un jour pas semaine, je rêve et je prends sans probleme
Devant mon café creme le Dimanche matin.
Adieu mon régime, mes vitamins et ma ligne,
Moi, je prends les tartines le Dimanche matin.
C'est our ma vie, pour moi c'est le bonheur

(Please excuse spelling mistakes, I've never seem it written down!) We would have been taught this in the late 1970s, so I'm guessing the song would have been popular in 1970s Framce or maybe even the 1960s (or earlier?). I've tried Google, YouTube and various lyric websites,.but no joy so far. There may have been more verses, but I don't remember being taught them. Any ideas would be very welcome!

Back from the vet. Freddie was very good in the waiting room, but greeted his vet with a hiss and continued to growl the entire time we were talking. When the vet brought him back to me after his injection, Freddie was still growling, and the vet said that Fred was "grateful as usual" (not).

I've had a late breakfast, Freddie has had his biscuit reward.for being a "good boy" (everyone still has 10 fingers and there was no bloodshed, so that counts as "good" to me!) and is now sleeping off his morning 's excitement. The drizzle has stopped and the sun is out, so I'm going to have some time in my garden

Thanks for the start. WTG on yet another vet visit... with no bloodshed. I can imagine how stressful those are...
Bama I'm hoping you are sleeping.. I try to avoid all screen when I wake up in the middle of the night. They make it hard to fall asleep again. Don't you think?
trissie that's a nice loaf of bread... and, anything with Caraway is even better I loved "playing" with starter... but sourdough bread baking is really time consuming. I admire you for being able to squeeze it into your already super busy schedule.
The trouble with old people (like me) is that the schedule might be lighter (at least some days...) but we also slow down considerably.
Unless it's Gma - she is my role model:).

We did not get out yesterday b/c of cold and me feeling under the weather, but I set up an expendable pole in the hallway for pup to step/jump over. (It was at 6-8" off the ground) She looked at it. I called her from the other side. She looked some more. I dropped a treat to encourage her. She could not reach it. Tried to encourage her. Finally, after about 10 minutes she worked up the courage and hopped over it. Then it became a fun game for her going back and forth:)
We played some scent games - she is getting very good at it.

A warmer day today! Currently, -4C but we are going up to (plus!) 2 C today!!! 8 C for tomorrow - with sunshine!

I had a headache-y day yesterday ... uncharacteristically, took pain pills but it kept returning. I'm thinking the weather change may have played a part. Hoping today is better.

Kittykatt, I’m glad Freddie’s all done with the dreaded appointment and has been rewarded for being so “well behaved”. I hope the after effects from your shot are already diminishing.

Kitkat, the phone screen doesn’t seem to bother me, I scrolled until it put me to sleep. The inside games sound fun and a good way to wear out dpup while allowing you to stay indoors.

I kept putting off my morning walk yesterday until it was too late so going to do that right now. Be back in a little while.

Thank you for another poetic start, Kitty! I need to come around later and check them out. I'm not familiar with today's or yesterday's. Yes, I really enjoy keeping tabs on the wildlife as I jog along the river. That wildlife is mainly waterbirds - only waterbirds yesterday. Maybe a squirrel or 2 - but they're not interesting to me. MM said she saw eagles twice at a different spot along the river. I wonder if they were passing through? I don't think they usually live in cities. I hope the vet visit is quick and as peaceful as possible.

It is gray right now and 28F (-2.2C) and we're forecast to get up to 40F (4.4C).

Today, I have payroll (prep, teach 11-1, progress on exams), and then I'll get together with friends K, S2, and J immediately after class until about 3 pm at the latest. Tonight, dh is out grading exams, so I'm on my own for dinner. I'm watching Fable tonight. Since dh will be out, I might just watch her at the girls' place. Other things: laundry, perhaps a Kroger order. Writing and reading are always on the list.

I'm off to a remarkably late start. I overslept but I think I was tired and needed extra sleep.
