My head is spinning here today! Cathy vented and deleted, and Harriet was commenting. And Nancy had the title wrong today? I didn't even notice. And I take it Sunny looked in too?

Went to library for about five hours and struck out some more on my Harpers. Used a three volume reference book which includes all the 1787 county tax lists, and substitutes other years for some 1787 records not extant. I now have a spreadsheet of Harpers in Virginia in 1787 sorted by county, including two families that Mitchell Harper was with early in Knox Co., Tenn., thinking perhaps they came from same area. Very little crossover. Nothing stands out as the county for more in depth research when I'm at LVA this month.

And....we're going on a November cruise. Miami to Bahamas, to Dominican Republic to Aruba to Curacao to Panama Canal to Costa Rica to Grand Cayman back to Miami, with four days at sea. Genealogical sessions on the at sea days, dh will go to the casino, pool, or bar. Something for both of us!

That cruise sounds great Twins' Mom!! I've been to a lot of those islands. The Panama Canal is on my bucket list. Can you let us know the cruise line you will be sailing on?

I couldn't get on to FBook earlier. I thought I had been banned because I ranted on there today as well. I was able to get on a few moments ago, so maybe it was a technical problem.

Cathy, it’s Norwegian, on Norwegian Sun.

I think Facebook was down earlier, I couldn’t get there either.

I should let people alone when they check on us! But, yes, I was pleased because, as Mystery said, Sunny's light was on.

I've corrected that mistake I made sewing the other day. Painstaking when most people would have just hurried and gotten it done. Hoping for not just fixed, but hardly noticeable. Can't be positive until scrutinizing it in daylight tomorrow, but I think I will be the only one who knows.

Pretty sure you will be the only one who is ever aware of any slight imperfection in your work, Harriet! I know it will be beautiful!

Twins, that cruise sounds like it will be perfect for you and dh!

I agree with blessed, Cathy -- sometimes it's good to let the crabby out!

The contractor/carpenter friend that I always talk about is actually about my dmom's age. I think he is a year younger, so 15 years older than me. DS met him and started playing music with him when ds was about 14 -- he is also a preacher and was doing a local tv program twice a month where he and some other men would play gospel bluegrass music. For some reason, they needed a banjo player and someone told them ds would be a good fit. He and his wife have just about adopted ds as an extra grandchild, and with my dad gone, I certainly do value his opinion on things related to building and repairing. He may not be quite the perfectionist my dad was, but I know he will do his very best to fix whatever needs fixing in this 40 year old house, and he will come back if it's not right, and I can trust him not to take advantage in pricing things for me. Plus, ds usually helps him when he is working here at my house.

I am wondering how much the insurance may deduct from any payment they give me because of the age of the roof. Of course, I don't know yet if the cost will exceed the deductible and by how much.
I have talked to three people this afternoon who have metal roofs and all are very pleased (except one said his red had faded to a sort of pink over the 24 years he's had it) (another said her husband wanted red and they were told red and blue are the worst of all to fade). None have noticed any problems with internet and phones. AND three people have named the same business (although one used them for shingles rather than metal.)
:!: The one with shingles chose this company because his daughter is an insurance adjustor and she recommended them. He chose shingles because he is a fireman, and he says when a house is on fire and the firemen need to cut a hole in the roof to vent the fire, it is much easier to do this on shingles and wood, rather than metal. This makes me go hmmm...
OTOH, I'm thinking if my house is burning to that extent, everything is probably going to be a total loss anyway, wouldn't you think?
I'm still torn on this decision, and when I told ds that dsisil said she liked the idea of a metal roof, but dbil would never agree to it, ds said, "Daddy probably wouldn't like a metal roof." He had no reasons, just a gut feeling -- and I kinda agree -- but I think it's just because dh (like myself) couldn't deal with change. But I'm thinking if I could get 30 years out of a roof, rather than 16... that has to be a better value. When I'm 95, I'm not going to worry about this roof.

I'm sorry, I am probably repeating myself a lot here. Just thinking aloud.

All the laundry is either put away or on hangers to dry. I ate supper, and then ate waaay too many carbs, fell asleep on the couch while watching AU and LSU play basketball (we won!), then talked to ds on the phone for a little while -- he was reporting on a booster club meeting -- and now I'm showered and will go to bed after I do my Bible study.
Tomorrow I have to go to Wmart and get something for dessert -- it's our night to do supper for Wednesday night.
I may need to go out and help dmom with some things she need me to do the heavy lifting for.

Mystery, where was the raccoon? If it was in your attic -- or anywhere in the house -- that certainly does not sound boring! Raccoons are so cute, but eeek! I wouldn't want one in the house. One night dh and I were sitting in the car eating at McDonalds, and we were right in front of one of the garbage cans. A raccoon popped up out of the garbage can and we watched him sitting there going through the garbage and eating. That was so neat. I've never seen one that close up again.

Well, good night to everyone. Yoga bright and early tomorrow. (10:00 am, you know.)
Tomorrow is another day.

LucyLee, I know roofing materials are different over here from much of the US, and I have no experience of wood shingle roofs, but I would definitely expect a roof to have a life span longer than 15 years! Dormers (with EDPM covering) have an expected lifespan of around 20 years or more, and tiled or slate roofs have a lifespan of 60-80 + years. ( The house I grew up in was built in the 1950s, and judging by the recent pictures from Google, still has the original roof of concrete / clay tiles, and it still looks fine after over 70 years! There's just one patch of new tiles where the current owners evidently took the chimney down and removed it).Thatch not so much, but I haven't had experience of them.

It was definitely a good idea to have male company with you when contractors come to give a quote. (I guess it's similar to cars, over here , if a woman takes her car to the garage, it's almost always more expensive for the same job than if a man does - the so- called "pink tax". ).

My 2 pennies re spray on treatments. Avoid at all costs any spray treatment to the *underside* of the roof. They have caused *huge* problems over here with damp and mould, and cost a lot to be removed. Spray treatments to the outside of the roof can give a few more extra.years, but they, too, can trap moisture, and cause damage to the roof timbers. ( hr3s332aaw - Matilda's contribution -sorry!😸🐾) I'm glad the contractor there was honest with you!

As to which roofer to use - I certainly would have reservations about employing someone whose previous work didn't last very long! It sounds as though you've been given some good recommendations from friends / family, Again, I've no experience of metal roofs , but IMHO, I think I would go with whatever lasts longer!😀
