The Shire is a breed of draught horse originating from England, known for its easy going temperament and long hair on its legs. . The Shire has a great capacity for weight-pulling; In 1924, at a British exhibition, a pair of horses was estimated to have pulled a starting load equal to 50 tonnes, although an exact number could not be determined as their pull exceeded the maximum reading on the dynamometer. Working in slippery footing, the same pair of horses pulled 18.5 tonnes at a later exhibition.

Shire horses were used for farm work, to tow barges at a time when the canal system was the principal means of goods transport, and as a cart-horse for road transport. One traditional use was for pulling brewer's drays for delivery of beer, and some are still used in this way; others are used for forestry and for commercial advertising. Shires have held some of the world records for the largest horse and for the tallest horse.

The Shire breed was established in the mid-eighteenth century in England, and a breed society and stud-book were established in the 1870s. Today, there are stud-books and breed associations in the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States,  and Canada.

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, there were large numbers of Shires, and many were exported to the United States. With the progressive mechanisation of agriculture and of transport, the need for draught horses decreased rapidly and by the 1960s numbers had fallen from a million or more to a few thousand. Numbers began to increase again from the 1970s, but the breed is still considered "at risk" by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.

Good morning, everyone, and happy Saturday!

Did Little Bit enjoy the Easter egg hunt, L.Ann?

How reassuring to have an honest repairman, KitKat. Front loading washing machines are the norm over here. Dogged is right about the doors collecting water, but so long as you remember to quickly wipe the cavity in the door seal after use, (takes less than a minute!) then you dont get a problem with mould. I also like to polish to porthole in the door to keep it looking shiny with no watermarks, but then, I'm fussy!

Gma, WTG with the taxes. Mmmm,. brownies!

Dogged, I hope you managed to reassure Germane, and that both of you were able to sleep last night!

I disappeared yesterday, but I did cut the Girls' nails and gave everyone a brush and their flea control. And cleaned out and decluttered the bottom of my wardrobe. (Again! It just somehow seems to collect "stuff").

Today is supposed.to be dry and sunny. DH is off for the day to play on the heritage steam railway , and I'm hoping to have some time in my garden. Bagging up everything I've decluttered would also be good! :D Giving Matilda extra food overnight worked - I was allowed to sleep in until 6.30 am -a huge improvement! I don't think she's going to be quite so happy with less food during the day, but I can cope with that. :D

What? The Shire horses are not a breed from Hobbiton, kittykatt? Now that's a disappointment! :-)
Thinking of all USA SHEs today, stay safe and make a difference!

Saturday here. I woke up nicely rested and wanted to comment to DH that he had not been waking up with his snoring only to discover he hadn't slept in the bedroom at all. Poor guy remembered how I was like "one of the weekend nights you go sleep on the couch so I can sleep uninterrupted for once!" and did! He had finally made an appointment for sleep study (I do think something could be done about it, and I do believe he has sleep apnoe), but it's not till end of May. I'll try to not smother him with a pillow till then :-)
The weather looks nice from the window - we shall see once I actually venture outside! :-) But the garden calls big time!

☀️Good morning!

Thanks for the start, kittykatt. Are all the kitties enjoying their fresh mani/pedi?

What happened in the US, trissie? I haven’t watched any news.

I’ve cuops and apologize for not responding individually although I have offered up conversation in my mind. Y’all were busy bees.
Our Friday was unexpected but very joyful. We had an appointment with the travel agent and got answers, now we are on hold until we get our passports.
We ran into a relative of dh’s and discussed a family reunion she’s having, she was on her way to a book signing, they have a book club that we are now signed up for, we went to the discussion, bought the books and got them signed, free lunch!, dropped off jars at florist and had a nice chat and got some pretty plants for a trade, dropped off donations, called some other cousins of dh and ended up meeting them for an early supper and stayed there for 3 hours catching up. They’re going on the cruise also plus he is interested in dh’s family history (their grandparents were siblings but spread out so lost touch), I’m all chatted out! We came home and I went to bed at 8:00 lol. Now I’m wide awake at 4am. Dd1 got home late last night. Her key fob isn’t working so we are going to the dealer this morning, maybe do a little thrifting, eat lunch, then she has a “date” with someone from high school who she didn’t really know back then but has started talking to on their reunion page. I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since she graduated. That’s so weird! 🤯
I’m going to scroll or nap until time to get up.
Have a great day!
♥ Wake each day expecting good things to happen! ♥

Good morning, Trissie and Bama!

Have a good time in your garden, Trissie -Ill be joining you there soon!

Bama, I'm glad you had a lovely time yesterday. How is Beau's eye doing? Neither of The Girls is impressed with their mani pedi -Jude has been assiduously using the scratching post to restore her murder mittens to their former glory. I get a pass with Freddie this month - his nails will be clipped while he's under sedation on Tuesday!

I'm having a slow start today. DH has left for his day in the trains, and Ive had all the cats snuggled on the bed. I have however, rejigged the part of the bottom of my wardrobe that I just couldn't get right last night - it's strange now we often see things more clearly the next day! :D
