Bama, you're a great source for authentic Native American info! I'm still watching Hudson and Rex. It's a fun show - clean and not too violent. I thought you lived in Alabama. Are you visiting Pensacola?
That's unfortunate about the English translation, Doggedly. It makes me think the translators didn't really understand the essence of the character. That Erma Bombeck quote hit the nail on the head!
Did DBD need the laughing farting unicorn when she watched the Jurassic Park movie, trissie? Sounds like the screenwriters weren't very creative - but sometimes predictability is considered a plus. Especially for kids. The kids in the films always survive right?

As for Tolkien's writing, dh just listened to The Fellowship of the Ring - in English. (Yes, English is dh's second language, but at this point, his English is probably stronger than his Dutch.) He complained that Tolkien used some unnecessarily long and outdated English words - so there's the time element in writing as well. He wrote the stories in the 1940s, I think.

Not related to translation issues but interesting imho: dh thinks Tolkien was sexist in his portrayal of women in his books - even strong warrior women, like Eowyn. . . Hmmm.... I had never thought about that. I did point out that maybe he was very progressive for his time; after all, he had a woman fighting on the battle field with more courage than most men and also had a very powerful female character in Galadriel, more powerful (at least it seemed so) than her husband Celeborn. Just off the top of my head.

Plan B for today - CG2 is cancelled. AA is at her parents' place in another town; she completely forgot about hosting (or attending) CG2 this weekend. We decided to cancel. (There are only 5 people in this group, so if 1 is unavailable, we tend to cancel.) This gives me 2 more hours in my afternoon!

Helia, today's menu was baked ham with cloves, wholegrain mustard and Demerara sugar crust, roast potatoes, gravy, Savoy cabbage, carrots and broad beans, followed by butterscotch pudding topped with whipped cream. We won't be needing supper!

Today is wet and chilly, so not much done outside. But we had a lovely service with a procession (no donkey, for obvious reasons! ) and a dramatic reading of the Passion. DF E was on fine form, and together we demolished most of a tub of chocolate brownies. Freddie has had his walk, and I'm having some time on the sofa now, watching Poirot. My aim is to spend some time working on the photos, and maybe do a little sewing.

Thank you, trissie . Is your dmom healthy, trissie? . Health issues can get in the way with dgkids. I panic when I'm not feeling well or have issues . It scares me that I would not be able to do things with dkids and my "third child" - ddog .
But you know what? lots of Grandma's complain about their kids not bringing Dgkids for visits. We are lucky: both my kids are close, both physically and otherwise. They help each other, the little cousins play together, their parents baby-sit for each other ... When I'm "in trouble" Dkids show up.

helia, there's another show that you might also like. It's set in St. John, NL, and it has the same light touch as Hudson And Rex. It's called Republic Of Doyle. Doyle is a PI who gets knocked out in most episodes. His father is a retired policeman who doesn't have a lot of respect for what Doyle does. In fact, most of the humour comes from the fact that Doyle doesn't get respect. But he's pretty good at his job and he mostly does things for the right reasons. There's actually been a cross-over episode between the two series.

My menus are nothing compared to yours, Kittykatt. Your lunch sounds amazing.
I'm starting to think that you have watched more Poirots than Agatha Christie wrote books. Was there a Poirot TV series?

I often cut corners when I'm cooking, kitkat, because I'm easy going on food. There's not much that I don't like. Probably why I celebrate loudly when I have something special, LOL.
That is wonderful that your dfamily is close to you and one another.
I love the idea of the watercolour challenge.

kitkat, my mother wasn't much into kids either - pretty much my grandparents raised me and I raised my younger sister. Took me a long time to realize that she wanted kids the way an eight year old might want a puppy - all the fun but none of the work. I also understand that there is a lot of trauma in her upbringing that shaped her - generational trauma is very real, especially in our family (there's WW2 related trauma that happened to my grandmother and her sister which keeps amplifying with each generation and is especially hard for women).
kittykatt, must be a European thing today with the cold weather!
helia, I think Tolkien wrote some very, very strong and interesting female characters - and some of them stand out precisely because they refuse to comply in a world that sees a woman's place at home and hearth. Eowyn, of course (I wasn't happy with the movies accenting Arwen as "warrior-princess", because in the books, only one woman was brave enough to stand against the nazguls and that was Eowyn), but you also have Luthien who stood against Morgoth, a feat few other males have attempted. But Tolkien himself was born in 1982 and so his view of women's place in the world were certainly shaped by his time.
I'll look into that series too, Dogged!
