The Marans, (French: Poule de Marans), is a French breed of dual-purpose chicken, reared both for meat and for its dark brown eggs. It originated in or near the port town of Marans, in the département of Charente-Maritime, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of south-western France in the 1920s, and is known for its docile nature..

The breed’s popularity spread and it was first introduced to the UK in 1929 by Lord Greenway. He was originally interested in the gourmet flavour Marans meat has but was soon fascinated by the colour of the eggs and showed them at Crystal Palace in 1934.

The Marans was accepted into the British Standard in 1935 and The Marans Club was formed in 1950 in the Grosvenor Hotel, London. The club recognises the following varieties of the Maran: Brown-red, Silver Cuckoo, Golden Cuckoo, White, Wheaten, Columbian, Black, Black-tailed Buff, and Silver Black. They also have orange eyes and white skin. In the UK Marans usually have non-feathered legs, but they can also have feathers on their legs.

They are an active breed and prefer a free range lifestyle over being kept in a chicken run or enclosure.

Today, DH goes to the office. We have a fine, dry start, so I'm hoping to have some time in my garden. I have yet another nurse appointment, and the house also needs attention. I also need to work on my report for the lunch club (coffee team report is done!)

Think about setting up Guardianship for F,J and M - looked on Cats' Protection, I need their microchip numbers, approximate DOB, colour and markings and useful information about them. Bookmark link with local recommended solicitors (also ask DF CW?)

I guess Sunday wasn't a day of rest for me - I spent 6 hours working on my mother's yard! (after church of course)
Now it's Monday by the clock, but time for bed!

Just found out that I agreed last fall (before Mother died?) to make a pryaer shawl for one of our high school graduates. Of course with all that happened in my life, I totally spaced it out and forgot! I think crocheting shells will go fast, I have month. I can do it!

Sleep well, Gma! You had a full day yesterday, and a busy day planned for today. I think crocheted shells for a prayer shawl will be very pretty, and grow a lot faster than knitting!

I had a very nice time in my garden and enjoyed on the early sun and blue skies. Fred has also had his walk. DF PM texted about her medical appointment this morning, and by the time I'd chatted with her, I realised I didn't have time to change out of my housework/ gardening clothes before going to the health centre. Oh well, everything was clean on this morning , and I did have time to wash my hands before leaving, so I didn't feel too guilty.

The clouds were building, so I took my umbrella, but fortunately didn't need it, but now I'm home it's just started spitting. Next up, lunch, then I'll start the housework.
