A spinning top, or simply a top, is a toy with a squat body and a sharp point at the bottom, designed to be spun on its vertical axis, balancing on the tip due to the gyroscopic effect.

Once set in motion, a top will usually wobble for a few seconds, spin upright for a while, then start to wobble again with increasing amplitude as it loses energy, and finally tip over and roll on its side.

Tops exist in many variations and materials, chiefly wood, metal, and plastic, often with a metal tip. They may be set in motion by twirling a handle with the fingers, by pulling a rope coiled around the body, or through a built-in auger (spiral plunger).

Such toys have been used since antiquity in solitary or competitive games, where each player tries to keep one's top spinning for as long as possible or achieve some other goal.

Spinning tops emerged independently in various cultures worldwide and are considered among the oldest known toys discovered by archaeologists. They have been unearthed on every continent except Antarctica. For instance, tops dating back to around 1250 BC were found in China, while a carved wooden top from approximately 2000 BC was discovered in Tutankhamun's tomb. Tops were used as toys in ancient Rome.

Rock band The Cure released The Top album in 1984, named, and at least partially inspired, by the toy of the same name. The album includes the title track in which the sound of a spinning top can be heard at the beginning of the song.

And now it's time for proper greetings!

Welcome home, L Ann! I'm glad everything went well.

Helia, you're adapting to your new routine very well -Im glad it makes it easier for you to exercise outside.

(((Trissie))) Constant change is hard. Would it be possible to get carers to come in for DMIL, or has she really got to the stage where some kind of care home would be better, for her own safety?

KitKat, the bite is slowly improving, thank you for asking. I'm waiting to see what the nurse says when I go today.

Laura, very good to see you! Are you ok with sending photos by email? If so, I'll pm you my email address, and if you can email the photos of the blanket to me, then I'll post them here, so Gma (and any other crochet experts!) can figure out the pattern. Oh, I nearly forgot, Freddie bit me back in February. It wasnt particularly bad ( just one fang this time instead of the usual 4!) but, for some reason, it's taking a long time to heal, even though there's no longer any infection. This was the second bite on three months which is unusual for Fred, which prompted me to ask the vet to check his teeth when he went for his exam recently. Result - Fred had 4 teeth extracted - I think that was the cause of his grumpiness, as he's now back to his loving self 😀

Bama, I hope you feel better today.

Gma, You've had a busy day! VG dry wise to make the most of the weather to work on the garden.

Dogged, I'm glad you had a wonderful time at the concert and that yesterday 's title brought back happy memories for you.

Yesterday was full, with a lot of time iny garden and a long walk. I also had to give my kitchen a really good clean, as somehow ants have got indoors. I'm guessing that so long as there's nothing for them to eat, they'll soon toddle off outside again. So everything edible is now either in containers, or in ant proof places like the fridge!

It's another beautiful day, so I think we'll have a nice walk to parish lunch after church. I also want to do a little in my front garden when I get home. Nothing too strenuous - I moved compost bags yesterday, and I can still feel it!

Welcome home, L Ann! I need to get some groceries today too.
That sounds like a really nice concert, Doggedly. I'm glad you bought a CD and can continue enjoying their music at home. How does Germane like it?
Lauralind, I'm not a crochet expert, but I'd love to see your blanket!

I'm here late. I woke up at a decent time, but lay in bed finishing a puzzle and then I got my phone and did some doom scrolling -- which is not a great way to start one's day as it put me in a bad mood. I've got my coffee and I'm slowly working toward being otd to payroll in 1.5 hours.

The sun is shining! It is 57F now and forecast to get up to 79F. 8-)

Last night: We watched Fable, who was pretty chill. She had been to the dog park earlier that day. Dinner ended up being taco meat from the freezer as I didn't have time to cook. Getting home from payroll later is going to be a new routine I need to get used to; I was pretty tired and I still needed to get some things from WF. We had some tortillas already. I made everything else fresh. After dinner clean up, I finished typing up the notes from the PD meeting on Tuesday.

Today: I'm going in to payroll around 10:45 to be on site in case teachers need help - but I don't think they will. During that time, I'm actually having a zoom meeting with AC. If I have any extra time, I'll use it to work on GGT. Later today, I have a session with my personal trainer at 4 pm. It's not clear if I'm needed to help with the Vol. ESL class at 6 tonight -- I think not. She usually contacts me a couple days beforehand. Then, we have a family meeting at 8 pm (here, family = us, the girls, M, and the Cs - just R and J12yo since S is out of town) to help plan dd30's event in June. Other things to do: get more groceries - a Kroger order. Start some laundry? Perhaps get in a walk to go with the weight training - just to enjoy the weather!

There's a goldfinch at our bird feeder. :)

Next:
- back exercises
- s2s and self care
- squeegee and wipe down shower

Later:
- some qt
- Kroger order made
- 10:35 otd to payroll
- payroll: set up S4 GGT page

- put away groceries

- after dinner clean up
- 6-7:30 Vol. ESL class??

TaDas!
