The walrus (Odobenus rosmarus; plural walrus or walruses) is a large pinniped marine mammal with discontinuous distribution about the North Pole in the Arctic Ocean and subarctic seas of the Northern Hemisphere. It is the only extant species in the family Odobenidae and genus Odobenus. This species is subdivided into two subspecies: the Atlantic walrus (O. r. rosmarus), which lives in the Atlantic Ocean, and the Pacific walrus (O. r. divergens), which lives in the Pacific Ocean.

Adult walrus are characterised by prominent tusks and whiskers, and considerable bulk; adult males in the Pacific can weigh more than 2,000 kilograms (4,400 pounds) and, among pinnipeds, are exceeded in size only by the two species of elephant seals. Walrus live mostly in shallow waters above the continental shelves, spending significant amounts of their lives on the sea ice looking for benthic bivalve molluscs. Walruses are relatively long-lived, social and intelligent animals, and are considered a keystone species of the Arctic marine region.

The walrus has played a prominent role in the cultures of many indigenous Arctic peoples, who have hunted it for meat, fat, skin, tusks, and bone. During the 19th century and the early 20th century, walrus were widely hunted for their blubber, walrus ivory, leather, and meat; in this period, the walrus population dropped rapidly all around the Arctic region. It has rebounded somewhat since, though the populations of Atlantic and Laptev walruses remain fragmented and at low levels compared with the time before human interference.

Good morning, Trissie, and thank you for starting us off.

A humourous touch for today, in case anyone needs some light relief, in the "Walrus Whizzer" commercial for Virgin Media, the star of the show is a highly realistic CGI walrus that commandeers a speedboat to cruise across the ocean to the song Suddenly by Billy Ocean.

Today DH goes to the office, I have an appointment with the nurse at the health centre,.and I also need to leave early so I have time to pick up my prescription from the adjacent pharmacy beforehand. I'm hoping it stays dry as I need to work in my garden today. I also need to check with painter .J whether he is in fact coning to us tomorrow, or whether (as I suspect!) he's actually going to DF PM. I'll.do that this afternoon, as I don't want to risk phone calls etc during my appointment. Fortunately DH is out this evening, so I can finish cleaning the kitchen then, if everything overruns today. :D

Thank you for starting us off, trissie, and for our walrus-y Wednesday.

That is a cute commercial, Kittykatt. Wasn't there a walrus somewhere in Europe that kept sinking boats because he was trying to use them as sunning platforms and they couldn't hold his weight? As I remember, the townspeople built him a sunning platform with enough boyancy to hold his weight, and he liked it so much that he stopped sinking the boats.

I couldn't sleep so I got up for a bit. I'll head back to bed to see if I am more successful.

Good morning trissie
Thanks for the Walrus-y start:) How is your week going?

Kittykatt Hope yor appt goes well. Is this still the bite?

Dogged I hope you get luckier with sleep than I did:) Woke up a little after 2, tossed and turned... Then, DDog started whining at 4...
Got up to take her out... She has a bit of stomach issue. I think I'll cook some rice for her.

As we went out to the backyard, I could hear the neighbour's "resident racoon" moving about... Thankfully, he did not come to visit us. (I had ddog on leash, just in case, as we had the neighbourhood bunny around yesterday  )

Having coffee - might as well do something since I'm wide awake. Worst case, I'll take a nap later.

Bama - happy to hear DH is doing reasonably well. (A lot of pain meds are better with food - maybe check with pharmacist?)
helia you asked- these are my "old age" aches and pains - no new injuries, touch wood.
LAnn - we had 30 C yesterday. (Today, we expect 20 - which is seasonal)

Today, I have a 10 a.m. class and an afternoon pick up (DGD). In between, I'm hoping to make a (much needed) difference in here...

For now, I'm going the read the news (against my better judgement)

Good morning / good night, Dogged and KitKat!

Dogged, you're right about the walrus :D I found an article with rather dramatic headlines!

https://www.itv.com/news/wales/2021-08- ... more-boats

KitKat, yes, it's still the bite. I'm quite happy to let it do it's own thing, they keep threateninge.with the clinic at the hospital (which seems like overkill to me as it's now so tiny) so this seems to be a reasonable compromise. :D

I managed some time in my garden this morning - there's more to do when I get back home if it doesn't rain - it was spotting when I left. I also need to message J when I get home to try and discover whether he is coming to me tomorrow or whether he's actually going to DF PM. I didn't want to do it earlier in case he decided to reply when I'm at the health centre, or, even worse, ring. (I turn the sound off, of course, but even so...)

Other jobs for this afternoon, message PS about the coffees on 14th June

Thank you for the start, trissie! I hope your day is going well. Is dh away this week with his mom?
That was a great commercial, Kitty! Thanks for sharing.
Our cool temps arrived over night, L Ann. The high today is 62*F. And we won't see the sun all day.
Glad it's not an injury, kitkat. Enjoy the class and time with DGD.

Dh's knee is now bothering him. He had to stop during his 12 mile run on Sunday and was limping on Monday. He's scheduled to run a half marathon on May 31. That is now in question. He's going to the Dr. today. Fortunately, he's very aggressive about getting medical help.

Yesterday after getting groceries, I did a light spiff of the living areas and the main bathroom. Then I made a salad and heated up some rolls for dinner. The pasta dh made was yummy! MM was here until about 9:10 pm. It was wonderful to chat with her. Dh and I did the after dinner clean up and then garbage and recycling. I got the docs prepped for my EPT interview this morning.

This week is very busy for me -- but I'm looking at next week, and since I won't have a class, it is amazingly open! 8-) 8-)

Today is another quite scheduled day:
9 - 9:30 payroll: EPT interview
10-12ish coffee with SS
1:40 - 3:30 payroll: teach my class
4:20 - 4:50 payroll: EPT interview

Other main things to do:
- exercise - I'm thinking about the stair stepper at the gym to prep for spending all day hiking UP the Alps in August - get dinner going (possibly in the crock pot)
- payroll: a little prep for class today -- always.
- payroll: collect the IR course pack edits and email them to CM.
- change the sheets on the bed and do some bedding laundry - I have new sheets to wash as well.
- refill the bird feeder

Next:
- back exercises
- s2s and self care
- squeegee and wipe down shower
- some qt

TaDas!
- up; weighed self
- coffee
- email deletions + weather website - gray day, high of 62 -- it is 59* now, so basically the same temp all day
