Lavinia Fontana (24 August 1552 – 11 August 1614) was an Italian Mannerist painter active in Bologna and Rome. She is best known for her successful portraiture, but also worked in the genres of mythology and religious painting. She was trained by her father, Prospero Fontana. She is regarded as the first female career artist in Western Europe, as she relied on commissions for her income. Her family relied on her career as a painter, and her husband served as her agent and raised their 11 children. She was perhaps the first female artist to paint female nudes, but this is a topic of controversy among art historians.

Fontana has been called "the most significant and prolific female artist of the 16th century."

Fontana's Self-Portrait at the Virginal with a Servant is considered to be her masterpiece. It was painted as a betrothal gift to the Zappi family, as evidenced by the Latin inscription in which Fontana describes herself as a virgin and states that she painted while looking at herself in a mirror, a testament to the accuracy of the depiction. (Lavinia Virgo Prosperi Fontane/Filia Ex Speculo Imaginem/Oris Sui Expressit Anno/MDLXXVII.)

Over 100 works by Fontana are documented, but only 32 signed and dated works are known today. Twenty-five more works have been attributed to her, making hers the largest oeuvre for any female artist prior to 1700. Some of her portraits were once wrongly attributed to her contemporary Guido Reni, another pupil of Denis Calvaert. Portrait of a Gentleman, His Daughter and a Servant, originally attributed to Pieter Pourbus, is now attributed to Fontana.

Good morning Trissie and thank you for.srart8nf us off with another interesting artist. Once again I had never heard of her before ( these boards are really educational!) :D

Yesterday we had 12 for parish lunch, and we sat outside- the temperature was perfect! We stayed chatting for ages afterwards, which was lovely. DH dealt admirably with the gas engineers (yes, plural! One of them and to do a re- accreditation for his Gas Safe certificate ( apparently this has to be renewed every so often) and they thought our house would be good. ( Reasons given - three different appliances and it's always clean and tidy!!!!!! Apparently we have a reputation. :D ) I thought it was just common courtesy to move everything that's in the way and ensure the cooker was clean , but apparently that's not always the case  Everything was fine, we just needed some more inhibitor (Fernox) added. But then they thought it would be a Good Idea to take the gas meter apart, check it and reassemble it. (Why?!! That's never happened before) Which of course is in an inaccessible.oart of the tall cupboard. So I came.home.to.find.all.the contents of that all over the kitchen floor. I put some back last night, but was more concerned with getting the groceries unpacked and PA and everyone fed, so I'll do the rest today. Oh, and one of the engineers was allergic to cats (!) so DH compromised by shutting the.Girls.in the bedroom.ans.Fred in the bathroom.. Fortunately I'd run the hoover round before I left and all the windows were open,.so hopefully that helped. :D

Today marks the third anniversary of us adopting Matilda. She decided 4.30 am was the perfect time to mark this momentous occasion.

So sorry the chair arrived broken, and causes a lot of complications for you, Dogged! Hoping they will offer you a good solution! I hate when there's mess up with deliveries... last year, I order printer cartridge, because the printer indicated it was low on supply. When I needed to replace it, lo and behold, the box contained a different brand which of course did not work! Had to return it and order a new one from another company (I really didn't like their customer service) - and guess what, the other company also sent a different brand! It caused big issues with printing stuff for DS15's schoolwork.
Happy adoption anniversary to Matilda, kittykatt!

So, Friday. I convinced DH to call his sister this morning, and ask her, if she really thinks it's a good idea to leave MIL home alone without supervision after a pacemaker surgery, when MIL doesn't even remember she had a surgery. If SIL will insist on this being a perfectly reasonable approach, then DH needs to drive over to the hospital and try to get in touch with their social worker to arrange for transfer to long-term care for at least the next week or so while she recovers. I think they are both being idiots, and I am mad at DH because his unwillingness to press his sister into some kind of action means things have to be done in the least convenient manner - if he actually spoke with her on Wednesday, a call could have been made to the hospital and meeting properly arranged, without needing to drive 2 hours hoping somebody would be available.

But, enough of that. Can't control what I can't control, so will work on what I can!

What a lovely self protrait! Thank you trissie, for info on all these wonderful female artists.
Never made it here thursday - and ?Wednesday too? I don't remember! Life is so full!

I'm just stopping by before going to bed - after a 13 hour day with dfBS: hospital rounds, pick up and set up medical supplies, take her home, feel very insecure about her wellbeing, called the ambulance about 6 hours later, when her condition was deteriorating (not dying, but definitely not manageable at home!)
Now they can take care of her in the emergency room, and I can go to bed -
In the morning I have a funeral visitation and funeral, then college reunion luncheon and activities, then supper there too. I wonder what I will get to participate in and what I will have to do for dfBS???

Oh, Trissie, that sounds an impossible situation! Who is the eldest out of SIL and DH? I was just wondering if DH had "younger brother syndrome"?

Gma, your days are so full! I'm glad your DF is getting the care she needs.

I've trailed round M&S and discovered this summer's colours are: sand/ ecru/ putty/ opaline/ fawn ( all posh names for "beige") , which, while a welcome change from fluorescent green of previous years, don't suit me. So I'm going to order my "essentials" online, where there is a much wider choice of both colour and size, and have them delivered. :D

Well, that is obnoxious that the gas engineers left a mess on your floor, Kitty. Did you get your hair cut this morning? Whatever "younger brother" syndrome is, I think my younger brother has it. LOL!
Getting the hospital social worker involved sounds like a good idea, trissie. What did DSIL say? Or would you rather not go there right now? No worries! Yes, it's helpful to do what you can do. Fontana - cool that she was the first female career artist in W. Europe.
Gma, you do so much for your friends! I hope this friend doesn't require much from you today. I'm sure you have lots to do at your house and dmom's house. Are you selling it?
Good morning, L Ann. Have a good day with Little Bit.
Doggedly, I hope you get the help you need with the chair.
Enjoy time out with dpup, kitkat!

Yesterday, I went to my 3 appointment/ meetings: 8 a.m. WW, 11-12 ci meeting with AC, and my work out at 4-5. I walked to and from the gym to add 40 minutes of walking to my exercise for the day. I did get a load of darks washed and dried. Pants and shirts were folded and put away. I also did a bit more payroll: set up the GGT spreadsheet and checked syllabi for S5 and communication - always a lot of communication. I also got the document for the lawyer signed and back in the mail. This is the authorization to switch trustees on my parents' trust. I also did a little odds and ends decluttering here and there - found 2 new books to read (1 fiction, 1 non-fiction) and ended an online subscription that I rarely use.

Today, I'm meeting with friend AA at 9 a.m. Then, I'll continue on to payroll to check and file S4 final exams. I would like to jog today, but my morning is scheduled and it will be quite warm this afternoon. Not sure - I may not jog. Maybe I'll go try the stair stepper at the gym instead. oh yay. I also need to get a few odds and ends from WF, gas the car, pack for our weekend, and perhaps get the car cleaned? Or maybe I'll do that next week. I'll try to stop by an ATM to get some cash out as well. Some decluttering in the MBR would be good too. At some point, I need to start cleaning the play room for ds + F and baby I's visit. Dh and I will leave around 5 pm. We'll find our hotel, settle in, and then we have a dinner reservation at 7 pm.

Next:
- back exercises
- s2s and self care
- squeegee and wipe down shower

Later:
- gather stuff and otd by 8:45

- (walk to the school if there's no parking there)
