Re: Giles Gilbert Scott Saturday
Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (9 November 1880 – 8 February 1960) was a British architect known for his work on the New Bodleian Library, Cambridge University Library, Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, Battersea Power Station, Liverpool Cathedral, and designing the iconic red telephone box.
Scott came from a family of architects. His father George Gilbert Scott Jr. was a co-founder of Watts & Co., which Scott became the second chairman of. He was noted for his blending of Gothic tradition with modernism, making what might otherwise have been functionally designed buildings into popular landmarks.

◕‿◕ * * * Good Morning! * * * ◕‿◕
kittykatt, thanks for the start. I hope the weather is now less hot for you. Did your garden thrive in the heat, or did it suffer a bit ?
Thinking about trissie and 40°C temps.
The week was busy and hot. Mostly hot. The schools opened on mornings only. The usual daycare service on Wednesdays opened only for families where parents work medical jobs or emergency jobs, like during Covid lockdown. I had to stay home that day (a day off work), in the dark.
Heat makes us all irritable and angry, staying indoors doesn't help
. Sleeping in the heat is difficult. Kids slept in the LR all week, but even there we reached 32°C at night at the worst of the heatwave.
We are lucky here in the Western part of France, temperatures are now almost normal again. On Thursday night we were able to get outside and enjoy fresh air. Fresh air felt like a luxury.
On Friday the heat was bearable. At work we were all exhausted and unproductive, even on Friday. I still feel exhausted and irritable.
There may be other heatwaves later this summer, and there will be more (and worse) in the years to come. It is very worrying.
TADAs
made shopping list with MrNG
had tea
opened all doors downstairs
MrNG left to do some grocery shopping while it's still early and not too crowded
TODO
open all windows upstairs
fold the sheets and pillows the kids used in the LR, hoping to "reclaim" the space
feed the kids and me

Re: Giles Gilbert Scott Saturday
Good morning, FFB! I'm glad you survived the heat. Many of our schools closed as well, or worked shorter hours, and the kids were allowed to wear their PE kit all day. Our local primary school is slightly.more considerate towards.working.parents than some of the others. On Wednesday they contacted parents to say they were closing at 1.30 pm, but if it was difficult for parents to collect their child, then he/ she could go home with another named adult. And for those who were really struggling ( you can't exactly.walk out in the middle of a shift, or if performing an operation!) the school remained open with supervision.for those kids. Other schools.just.announced.at.8 am they were closing that day,.leaving many parents scrambling.to find child care.
I remember.baxk.in the summer.of.1976,.which was really hot amd dry for weeks,.we had lessons.outside, especially."silent reading" and "nature study", often in the shade under a.tree. But so many schools have sold their grounds that I guess they don't have that luxury any more.
My garden has had mixed fortunes. The geraniums (pelargoniums ) love the heat and are thriving, as are the hollyhocks. The roses were starting to struggle a little bit , but have responded well to some TLC with a good drink.of water amd some very dilute feed, and the Campanula finished early - hence why I was pulling.out the dead flower stems and trimming it back yesterday. The hardy geraniums have gone all leggy with very few flowers left,.so they've had a good chop, and should produce more leaves and flowers later on. There are now some bare patches,.but as soon as we get some rain ,.the flower seeds that are dormant in the soil will start to germinate.
Yesterday was spent mostly in the garden. We "only" reached 28 C,.so it was a perfect.summer day. Everything is now looking tidier, if a little bare!
Today I need to concentrate on the house. It would be good to hoover and bake while its still reasonably cool.( I don't have to prep lunch for tomorrow as we're going out). I also need to catch up on laundry, but I'm sure I'll have time outside as well. Not sure.of DH's plans yet!

Re: Giles Gilbert Scott Saturday
I do feel for all of the European she's who are suffering with the intense heat! I remember as a child, no air conditioning, difficulty sleeping, I don't think we even had a fan! We wore what were called "shorty pajamas", and just ahd a sheet over us for covers.
So far, we haven't had weather that is too hot here yet. I think there's a locally published book about years past entitled "too hot, go to the lake" but I ahve only seen the title, never read it. I will say, our state has LOTS of lakes, and many people do just that - go to the lake where the breeze is a little cooler, and where spending time IN the water is escape from intense heat.
It's after 0330, I'm not in bed yet. I did have a cup of tea - is that keeping me awake? Or is it that I had bills to pay and correspondence to do? So now we know why I am not a secretary, as I am very slow at this, I started shortly after supper....
Yes, it's bedtime, and I ahve my list made out for Saturday morning and day
Starting with stop at the post office to mail everything I did
Then go to church for Mission Quilters
Followed by checking mother's house,
visiting dfBS (which is in the next city, about 15 miles)
and since I am there, several errands.
Time to sleep fast! and be grateful for the days I was able to "sleep in"
♥

Re: Giles Gilbert Scott Saturday
trissie, thinking of you in the heat. We've been warned that we should expect to go over 100 the first of next week, so perhaps overlapping some of your very hot days upcoming. Congratulations to your ds for making the B honor roll.
Yes, FrenchFlybebe, with extreme heat the energy saps, the irritation fuse grows short, doesn't it?
Best wishes to ((all those sweltering)).
The signs of hot summer here are starting. Some varmint has been bumping around my container plants in the night - we suspect a skunk since there was some further evidence we could not mistake
. But it could have been whatever the skunk encountered while being completely innocent. Sometimes they try to reach the cool, moist roots of container plants, for the tubers or the insects that the roots harbor.
Also, I myself can be found sheltering indoors more, lol, in that I am sewing most days. Yesterday wore myself out basting a quilt, which is a tough enough chore that I say to myself never again. I wonder if it will ever be the truth - I think I'm pretty close.
Gma, yes, and a hose or sprinkler for children or the young at heart, pets.
We are getting groceries in today, I'll check to see if the garden needs part of irrigation turned on, get to cooking the healthy brunch that's planned, then the Dailies. And the rest is stitchery.

Sleep well, Gma! You brought back a memory with "shorty pajamas" - I had those too as a little girl! ( One set with pink flowers,.the other with blue flowers.) How much water should one be drinking when it's really hot? I think I was averaging about 10-12 glasses a day ( sipping regularly throughout the day), but I was still on occasion feeling a bit headachy and dehydrated. I was careful to stay out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day, so I don't think "too much sun " was the cause.
Have fun with your quilt project, Harriet! Oir.cory.hosted.a.qu8lt.exhinition a few years ago, and I went with my now DDeparted Friend HE. We had a lovely.time and the quilts were beautiful -so much very intricate work. I have a suspicion that, knowing the English weather, in a couple of weeks it will probably be raining again, and we'll look back in nostalgia at these few hot days we've had .
I will confess I have enjoyed my evenings.in the garden, and being able to stay out until 11pm chatting with neighbours and still be warm enough in just a t shirt - no jacket required!
Today is cloudy and much cooler, with a breeze. I have all the doors and windows open to give the house a good airing, and I'm making good progress on my tasks for today. One LOL done and the next in the machine, I've PUPA the sitting room and run the hoover round in there, tidied the bedroom and had a few minutes in my front garden . DH has gone to pick up a few things from Waitrose. I need to make flapjack for tomorrow and also bake a cake for us before the kitchen.gets too hot

Re: Giles Gilbert Scott Saturday
Kittykatt thank you for the skunk thoughts - there are times we as humans try to do right by little critters, even when they are quite a mystery to us. As our family drove home from church one Sunday we encountered a remarkably heavy skunk aroma and so we complained heavily, too. Dd27, then about 4 or 5, mused, "We should all be thankful to God. He never lets all the skunks get mad at the same time."
