A Few Green Leaves is the final novel by Barbara Pym, first published in 1980, the year of Pym's death. Although several novels written before her rediscovery were published posthumously, A Few Green Leaves was the last she wrote.

In the mid-1970s, anthropologist Emma Howick comes to live in a cottage belonging to her mother in an Oxfordshire village, planning to write up her study of new towns. But she turns her anthropologist's eye on the villagers, considering them as subjects for another paper.

They include the rector Tom, his elder sister Daphne who came to 'make a home' for him after the death of his wife, two doctors (a generation apart in age and attitudes) and their wives, a food critic, a bohemian academic couple and a number of spinsters. Emma ponders whether she could adjust permanently to village life, and notes the changes that time has wrought on local customs. Among them are the decline of the manor house, which was once the site of regular gatherings for locals, but is now off limits except on a few occasions. As in many of Pym's novels, the Anglican Church plays a key role, although few people now attend the church.

Emma is single, to the disquiet of her mother and others, who seem to see her career goals as incomplete without marriage. Emma faces two potential love matches. First, a former lover, Graham Pettifer – also an academic – rents a cottage near the village to complete a book he is working on, and Emma is drawn back into his life, even though she is not sure how she feels about him and even finds him rather boring. She meets his estranged wife, the glamorous Claudia. Second, Tom's sister moves away, leaving him with only a rather unsatisfactory daily woman as domestic help. He begins to view Emma as a romantic partner.

At the end of the book, Emma chooses to remain in the village, write a novel, and pursue a relationship with Tom. Although much has declined in village life, Emma decides to step away from her objective scientific view of the community and join it.

Good morning everyone and happy Friday!

L.Ann, thank you for the book recommendation - I'll have to look that one up.

Dogged, what are maggi?.I haven't come across them before.

I managed to cut both the Girls' nails before I quickly got changed and then walked down the hill to the parish church for the churchwardens' commissioning service. That took about an hour, and then we had refreshments, and then DF PL gave me.a.very welcome lift back up the hill. Back home, DH had managed to put away around half of the groceries, but seemed clueless about where the potatoes, bread flour, peppers and cereal live, despite him using.them.every day!

Today is going to be hot again, and I have aot to do outside, so, to maximise the use of the shade, I need to work in the front garden early.and the back garden later on in the evening,. especially as I need to spray the roses. I also need to feed Cookie,.and water DNeighbour S&T's plants . And maybe.cit Freddie's nails?

I won my race with the sun in the front garden, and the roses are now fed, deadheaded and sprayed. And the front path swept. I've had a chat with DF CW and walked Freddie. It's now 29 C / 84 F, so I'm back inside until it cools down later on.

I'm having some trouble with this website. Is anyone else?

That storyline sounds vaguely familiar, Kitty. I wonder if I read that book long ago? WTG on winning the race! Now you can enjoy a beautiful spiffied front garden.

Our AQI is at 432 right now, so a little better than yesterday at this time but still in the hazardous range. It's still very hazy outside and the sun is orange. I'll wear a new N95 mask as I walk to and from payroll from the parking lot.

Today: This morning I'll go to the gym, pack, prep for class. I'll teach 1:40 - 3:30, and then we'll load the car and drive to another city to cheer on J12yo in her swim meet. The girls will be there too! I'm not sure what the dinner plan is.

Next:
- back exercises
- gym: stair master
- s2s and self care

Later:
- squeegee and wipe down shower
- make bed
- finish reclaiming kitchen
- some qt
- payroll: prep for AAS D7
- payroll: update gradelink
- prep grad card for AR for the mail
- if time, start on exam prep?
- pack for overnight trip: clothes, toiletries, food, cold - milk (I think it's shelf stable but just in case), electronics, books
- lunch
- after lunch clean up
- 1:40 - 3:30 payroll: teach AAS D7
- load car
- DRIVE to other city
- try to see J12yo's races at 6:45 and 7:10 (she will have already swum several times already -- these are the first we can possibly see)
- dinner out??
- settle into hotel
- duolingo
- update WW
- update MFP

TaDas:
- up; weighed self - up 1.4 lbs overnight?? Not sure that is real/ correct
- coffee
- dw 1/2 emptied
- email deletions; weather website + AQI websites
