Re: Stop the World - I Want to Get Off Saturday
Stop the World – I Want to Get Off is a 1961 musical with a book, music, and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley. In 1966 Warner Bros. released a film adaptation of the play. In 1996, a film version was produced for TV, made for the A&E Network.
The show, set against a circus backdrop, focuses on Littlechap from the moment of his birth until his death. Each time something unsatisfactory happens, he calls out "Stop the world!" and addresses the audience. His progress through school, like his birth, having been briefly portrayed, he first finds work as an office helper performing menial tasks, or tea boy.
A little later, his first major step toward improving his lot is to marry his boss' daughter Evie after getting her pregnant out of wedlock; Now saddled with the responsibilities of a family, he is given a job in his father-in-law's factory. He has two daughters, Susan and Jane, but truly longs for a son. He allows his growing dissatisfaction with his existence to lead him into the arms of various women in his business travels—Russian official Anya, German domestic Ilse, and American cabaret singer Ginnie—as he searches for something better than he has.
He becomes rich and successful and is elected to public office. Only in his old age does he realize that what he has had all along, the love of his wife, was more than enough to sustain him.
But Evie dies. Littlechap comes to terms with his own selfishness while writing his memoirs. As death approaches, he watches his second daughter give birth to a son. When the boy nearly dies, Littlechap intervenes and allows Death to take him instead. In that final moment, Littlechap mimes his own birth, beginning the cycle once again.

Re: Stop the World - I Want to Get Off Saturday
Good morning everyone and happy Saturday!
I will CUOP, but yesterday was One of Those Days. I had a very long text.from my Romanian neighbours whose cat I am currently feeding. It was not in their usual style (their English is not good) and I'm fairly certain they used AI or a translator app or both. Essentially, their return will be delayed until the 18th /19th August, due to several improbable factors, the most important being a need to "get ID and a passport for her son" which will take "ages" due to the summer.
The flaw in this statement is how did the son (who I saw and spoke to before they left) leave the UK and travel to Romania without a passport in the first place??!!! I've also checked online and the turnaround for emergency ID in Romania is 1 day and a passport for a minor (if he somehow lost it when they had reached Romania!) is around 5 days, no matter what time of the year.
And, apparently they're going to be driving back to the UK (in what? They left their cars behind). Also driving is going to be very expensive (petrol, tolls, accommodation etc).whereas flying would be much cheaper and quicker. (I checked online, and.as it's the height of summer, flying would cost around £600-800 for the whole family, whereas driving could easily cost around.£1200, not to mention driving that distance with a 6 year old and a teenager could be "interesting".
But the biggest red flag is that they asked me if I would continue looking after the cat and to *reduce* the amount of food I give the cat each day (she is not overweight), rather than quickly and easily "pinging" me some money for more cat food, or asking me to buy more food and saying they'll reimburse me when they get back.
Officially, I am playing along with all this, so I sent a polite text by return, saying I was sorry for the complications, and of course I would carry on feeding the cat. Privately, I'll carry on feeding her the correct amount of food and just buy some more of the same food to give her, as her welfare is important. ( I'm not looking to be reimbursed, although I'll keep the receipt as evidence, just as I'm keeping all the text correspondence. In any case, even on reduced rations, the food would run out several days before their revised return date. )
I have No Idea what's going to happen long term, whether they will return on their revised date, whether they will produce more excuses for more delays (car broken down, someone's ill etc) or whether I'll just be ghosted from now on, if they've decided not to come back. There are some other potential red flags which indicate they could have done a "flit" and left permanently, ( if things do come to a head in the future, I'll post all the details in MO or J& C, but for now I don't want to be too hasty and possibly misjudge them, as, of course, they could still come back.) The cat is being cared for, which IMHO is the most important thing, so, in the meantime, we'll just have to play along and wait and see.
I did manage to spray and feed my roses and do a few other garden jobs yesterday, but I want to do some more today. Plus I need to do something in the house. Cleaning the windows would also be good, it I can pick a time when the sun isn't shining.on them.

Re: Stop the World - I Want to Get Off Saturday
Hmm.... That is interesting logic on the part of your Romanian neighbors, Kitty. Good for you to continue caring for the cat as she needs. Hoping they do return.
It is sunny here, but rain will probably come this afternoon. That's a typical mountain weather pattern. It looks like it will rain every day of our hike - maybe not too much or, even better, maybe just in the afternoons after we've arrived at the huts.
We don't have much planned today. Dh and I already went to the bakery and got bread for the day.
Dd28 arrives this afternoon. Dh will go down the mountain to pick her up at the train station. I think I will not join him; that is one tricky 24 km road to navigate - very steep and narrow, full of switchbacks + lots of traffic, including a bus and large trucks with logs. There are places where only one car can fit and places where you can't see oncoming traffic. (I drove about half of it yesterday. We switched drivers after we both realized I didn't know all the protocol of this sort of road. Dh has driven in the Alps a lot so he was more comfortable.) Also, dd28 will need to sit in the front seat because of a tendency to car sickness. Two of dh's older sisters will arrive today. We think they're staying in the town, but we're not sure. If they're here, we'll probably see them. His younger sisters are camping with their younger families somewhere else down the mountain within a 45 minute drive of the town.
The bnb owner told us yesterday that today is Switzerland's National Day! There will be a festival here this afternoon.

Re: Stop the World - I Want to Get Off Saturday
How exciting helia ! I'm glad your vacation is going on as scheduled. I hope the Swiss bread is good, it must be something like French bread. The road doesn't seem like the kind of road anyone enjoys using. Glad you managed to arrive safely. I hope you keep us posted on your adventures, even though maybe it won't be as easy in the wild. The landscapes you see will probably be breath-taking, unless the weather turns cloudy / rainy and visibility becomes limited. I envy you !
Kittykatt, the whole story sounds very strange indeed. From what you say, it is possible they may not be back until weeks or more, or maybe not at all. Their cat is lucky to have you. It is probably wise to keep track of their messages and how you take care of the cat.
Sunny day, I wish it were rainy as grass is yellow everywhere and some trees are turning yellow or brown due to lack of water. We went to the library in the morning, it will be closed for three weeks. Thsi afternoon I drive the boys to the local large store with each their list of required school supplies, and I'll do a quick shopping for fresh produce while they get started on their lists, then I'll help them finish and we will come back home and put everything away until September 1st...
The start of August is making DS10 a bit melancholy, it means half the summer school break is already gone.
TADAs
morning routine, with real coffee for a change
weekly grocery shopping order online
all fed
DS10 and I to library
DS8 and MrNG to get some garden garbage at collection point and collect weekly groceries
prepared lunch, served lunch, now cleaned up
TODO
some quiet time
lease for the large store in approx 35 mns
quick fruit and veg shopping
school supplies for each kid
back home, put everything away
some house tasks, admin stuff, handwash a few items of payroll clothing
later
make pizzas for dinner
choose family movie
enjoy family movie night
sleep in a real bed, for a change ?

Morning all. Kittykat that is very interesting about your neighbors not returning. Who knows what is up there.
Helian that sounds like an adventure on that road. Have a wonderful day. Course it's half way through already.
I'm glad school doesn't start till September here lann. Except I hope I can get ds out of his hermit stage. Except maybe back on routine will help . Frenchie I hope ds10 can enjoy the rest of summer.
I need to get up and figure out what to take. I woke up with a headache. A muscle relaxant and a soak helped the neck some. Maybe a different kind on top. Dh stretched my neck too. Just gotta rest a bit and hope it goes away.
Today's tasks... whb. Pick some berries once it looks like it's done raining? Some crafts? A few things in town. Some more research see if I can read something that will help approach ds. Some days he's ok. I don't mind him in his room some but all day. ? He had all of yesterday home alone while we both worked. Then was out for supper and back in his room all evening.

Re: Stop the World - I Want to Get Off Saturday
I'd like a day off, but I still have a K to clean, tidy at Mother's to get ready for the 4 VBS (vacation Bible school) staff. The I will have them Sun eve thru Fri morning. 5 nights, 5 breakfasts, and including myself, 5 people. Remember I've been a widow for 16 years. 8 years before that, everything for dh was pureed. I only had 1 child. Yes, I was the oldest of 4 children, and that was 60 years ago! but was never in charge: Mother was! It's been 3 years since Mother went into a NH, and breakfast for a 98 year old before she went there is quite different from breakfast for 4 active 20 yr olds! And 1 is vegetarian, and another has to be gluten free! So this is going to be a cooking challenge! Plus I'm not a morning person, so getting up and making breakfast for hungry young people is going to be a challenge. I am sure they are nice "kids" and I'm trying to put my anxiety to rest, hoping that I can carry on good conversations with them - I am generally more quiet. I will be welcoming.
That really is a strange situation, kittykatt. Do you think they have decided to stay in Romania? Did the passport expire? (You'd think they would have checked that before leaving) I hope the kitties are all getting along.
Doggedly, do you think that Germane has a high blood sugar and that's why she has such large pee's? Would insulin help? Has that been checked by the vet?
helia, it sounds like you are having a wonderful vacation.
laurlind, I hope you can find something that interests ds to get him more externally focussed.
FFB, sounds like ds10 likes vacation! Getting your kids ready with school supplies must be a strain on the budget.
L.ann, your regular organization impresses me. Our public schools sometimes start in August, sometimes Sept. There is construction work being done in the middle school, so I think Sept this year, so the workers can continue as long as possible. My grandson returns to University in August.
Hi to anyone I missed.
I need to go do some work, which will hopefully reduce my anxiety about having all these people. I have to bring a few clothes to mother's house for myself too. And find a key - I have been getting in with my garage door opener.
