The garden strawberry (or simply strawberry; Fragaria × ananassa) is a widely grown hybrid plant cultivated worldwide for its fruit. The genus Fragaria, the strawberries, is in the rose family, Rosaceae. The fruit is appreciated for its aroma, bright red colour, juicy texture, and sweetness. It is eaten either fresh or in prepared foods such as jam, ice cream, and chocolates. Botanically, the strawberry is not a berry, but an aggregate accessory fruit. Each apparent 'seed' on the outside of the strawberry is actually an achene, a botanical fruit with a seed inside it.

The garden strawberry was first bred in Brittany, France, in the 1750s via a cross of F. virginiana from eastern North America and F. chiloensis, which was brought from Chile by Amédée-François Frézier in 1714. Cultivars of F. × ananassa have replaced the musk strawberry F. moschata in commercial production. In 2024, world production of strawberries exceeded ten million tons, led by China with 38% of the total.

Strawberries have appeared in literature and art from Roman times; Virgil wrote about the snake lurking beneath the strawberry, an image reinterpreted by later writers including Shakespeare. Strawberries appear in Italian, Flemish, and German paintings, including Hieronymus Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights.

I have run the dw and transferred the dishes to the drying rack. I am caught up on washing cutlery now, which is always my most loathed task. Happy to delegate it to the dw.

I'm going to have to miss church so I can get to my cousin's party, 2 hours away.
Package is wrapped, cards (one funny one from my mom- in absentia)
pillow shams are out of the dryer to finish drying over a towel bar
all that's left is brush my teeth and put my PJs on, then set my alarm and get into bed.

I love strawberries, Kitty! I didn't know they were from France. Never really thought about their origins before. Have a good morning at church. I'm going to see if you wrote about your Sunday lunch today.
Sleep well, Gma. I hope you are able to learn more about who you are called to be at this time in your life when you don't need to take care of other people. It could be a very freeing and exciting discovery!

We are safely installed in our Avignon bnb which is located in the historical part of Avignon. It has a rooftop terrace from which we can see the top half of the palace. We are quite close to it. Dh is sitting there now, and I'm sitting inside in the living room so I can charge my laptop. The terrace is connected to this room and there are large windows, so I too have a view of the palace! Dh bought tickets to visit it later this morning.

My legs are slightly less sore this morning but still need a good stretch. We're on the 4th floor (I think actually 5th floor since the 1st floor is zero), and after getting groceries last night, dh wanted to climb all the stairs carrying our bags of groceries instead of taking the elevator. It's probably good for our sore muscles (his legs are sore too) to keep moving. At least our Hgb levels are high after a few days at higher altitudes, so we shouldn't get out of breath as easily! LOL!

I must say, it is SO nice to unwind a bit - for me and even moreso for dh, although he does continue to work - but less.
